Can someone please recommend a good place to start with AF? I've only heard their music from friends, and figured I might as well invest in them to give their music a shot.

They have 3 albums. IMO, you can skip Funeral (probably will get crucified for that) and go straight to Neon Bible. That is a great cd. Also, the more I listen to their new album, The Suburbs, I believe it is better than Neon Bible.
Even if you poured over the whole catalog, it won't take up a bunch of your time. It is worth it.
Thanks for the feedback...I'll read up on reviews via itunes and amazon for funeral and neon bible I guess. Or maybe just get both of them...
You know, before you buy anything, watch this youtube concert:
Some of my favorite songs on this concert: - Ready to Start - No Cars Go - The Suburbs - Rococo - We Used to Wait - Month of May - Keep the Car Running
you guys voted too hard........now they're #2 on the lineup.
What is their proper position then? They are a fantastic 2. I think Bonnaroo should have scooped them up in 2007 when Neon Bible came out too. They could have easily pulled in a 7 or 8 spot back then.

I slit the sheet. The sheet I slit and on the slitted sheet I sit.

I'm not saying anything is wrong with their position at number 2. Just thought it was funny that this thread wanted Arcade Fire to at least be on the lineup but everyone here can be happy that they are the second act.

Suck it Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga!! You got burnt up by the Fire baby!!! My faith in the Grammys/mainstream music/humanity was restored that fateful night.
I could listen to all three of their albums without so much of a thought as hitting "skip". They've aged nicely I think. I'm so stoked for this June it's nauseating.
They have 3 albums. Funeral is by far their best in my opinion. If you want their most popular songs, then type there name into youtube.
Nolan/Kida...I picked up Funeral and really like it. I'm glad I was fully exposed to their music through their debut really. It's going to be interesting to see how they evolve over the next couple of albums.
I admit I stand totally corrected. I had stated I thought AF was overrated based on what I had heard, but after sitting down and listening to the entire album I have a much deeper/better appreciation of their music.
Just curious...have you seen them live? Do they jam at all, or are do they just replicate their album material for the most part?

Nolan, one of their staples of their live sets over the last few years has been playing Power Out right into Rebellion, which is totally badass.
Other than that they pretty much replicate album material and don't "jam." Don't worry though, if you like their albums, you'll LOVE their live show, it's pretty incredible.
could not be more pumped to see these guys at coachella and now they've added a show at a fairly small outdoor venue here right outside austin called the backyard (www.thebackyard.net). their opener is explosions in the sky, and i know it will be amazing to see both bands in such a small setting.

This is pretty cool (the response below.....not the original letter I'm going to describe first). Some record exec named Steve Stoute took out a whole page in the NYTimes for an open letter he wrote to the Grammy's and organization/people behind it. In the letter he basically states that the grammy's have lost touch and are hypocritical and stuff. He brings up Past albums that got snubbed but the big reason for the letter was because Arcade Fire won the album of the year (which he disagrees with). He also questions why they got to play a song before AND after they won the award. You can read his full letter here.
So Arcade Fire's manager responded with a simple but awesome letter:
Arcade Fire had the final slot on the Grammys as the ratings are low at the end of the broadcast. It really is that simple. We were one of the least known acts on the bill for a network audience. Don't you think I wanted a better slot for the band?
The reason we got a second song was also simple. No big plot. We had no guarantee of air time, but it was simply to play out the end credits of the show, if we're even had that much. The show never runs like clockwork to an exact time so the end is always loose. As it happened, the broadcast was covered by sponsors messages and the end credits.
For the Grammys international broadcast our main performance, along with that of Mumford and Sons and the Avett Brothers was completely cut from the show. Our end title performance was bastardised because they cut out ads/sponsor messages completely. It was a bit of a farce. You'd think we'd be given a little more after the fact. Arcade Fire deserved the win this year. They made the best album. If the award was names "Album Sales Of The Year" award, there would be no discussion. Stoutes letter was nice piece of self publicity. Did he see Kanye's tweets when we won and the praise he gave us?? He needs to tune in.
Eminem made a big selling album but it was far from being his best work. Katy Perry made a big pop record that simply didn't have weight or credibility. Gaga's repackage, great album but it was a repackage of the main release. I think everyone felt it was going to be Lady Antebellum's moment having won 5 out of 6 awards to that point. We all felt that way too.
I'm proud of this band and what they have achieved. We didn't lobby any organisation for this nor did the band play the game. We paid our own overhead to do the event, thus the lack of on stage gimmicks. No label picked up the tab.
Arcade Fire are now one of the biggest live acts in the world. It's not all about record sales. It's about making great records and it's about building a loyal fan base. Ther band make great albums, they're not a radio driven singles band. On top of that, they own their own masters and copyrights and are in complete control of their own destiny. Things couldn't be better.
Excuse any typos as I'm on my blackberry
Best regards Scott Rodger
He's got great points when bringing up the other albums that were competing with Arcade Fire. Just makes me like the band a little bit more.
That initial op-ed piece was pretty dumb, but to be honest I've heard AF's manager is kind of a smurf.
He may be. But his response is concise and to the point. The original piece just assumed certain things that made him look like an ass after their manager clarified why they played where they did and why they played again.
Dear Vincent, I’m one of the so called “not good people”. Can we get the camera equipment you stole from the band returned yet? Perhaps if your drug habit could be contained you may actually be able to complete a film. We should have taken advice from our other friends who worked with you who advised us not to. But we thought it would be great. Unfortunately we were wrong. Your move to “art films”, that wouldn’t by any chance be circumstantial as no one is prepared to hire or commission you any more? Telling the truth. It’s not that hard Vincent. Now can we get our equipment back? thanks Scottp

I saw them in November for the first time. I found that they stick more or less to the album versions of songs but the intensity is ramped WAY up. They may extend the odd part to invlove the crowd or say a few words. I like to put their live energy in the same catagory as MMJ.
For those of you who have Palladia, Arcade Fire performing at Galicia, Spain will be on on Sunday at 2pmCST. It's a repeat, but I haven't seen it so I thought I'd share!
