i'm open to rap music, but i've never really been into outkast. i always see stankonia listed as one of the best albums of the '00s, and i see a lot of people praising them hear and the coachella board. they're decent, but when i listen to rap i'd rather listen to dre/jay-z ... just wondering.
I may get custied for this, but I'd rather not see The Rolling Stones headline Bonnaroo. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love their stuff from the '60s and '70s, but it's been over 25 years since they put out an album that I would consider great. Also, they would certainly drive up ticket prices for Bonnaroo significantly. I've never been to one of their shows, but from what I understand, the cost is in the triple digits even for an average seat. I think that e-mail was less of a "whoops, wrong mailing list" and more of a "oh crap, we may have just revealed next year's largest act".
Even so, a headliner does not make or break a festival, and I would still take the Stones over a lot of bands that have headlined Roo in the past.

Well, I think that trying to explain the appeal of a band in words to someone who isn't a fan is generally pretty pointless - music either clicks with you or it doesn't. One thing I will say is that Outkast are much more than just hip hop. They incorporate elements from many different genres of music, including funk, soul, R&B, rock, blues, and even jazz. Dr. Dre and Jay-Z, on the other hand - while extremely talented in their own rights - are more straightforward hip-hop.
I saw them about seven years ago - they were headlining the first thing I attended that could be considered a festival by any stretch of the imagination. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing them again. However, if they were to play Roo, I think they would probably be a late night on one of the stages, not a headliner.

Not gonna custy ya.....don't care for that whole "system".
I will say that a lot of the things you said have already been said about a bunch of different headliners. Personally if I had to choose between Rolling Stones, Metallica, or Pearl Jam - I'd go with the Stones......but that's just me.

think I prefer Pearl Jam after that 2008 performance...the Stones would be just a nostalgic act...the Boss's unit is far more better than the Stones at this time of their life, but just my opinion

Outkast would put on such an amazing live show that anything Dre or Jay-Z would come up with would just pale in comparison. I agree that trying to convince someone who isn't into a band that that band is worthy of their praise can be a sticky situation. That said, if said person brings up DRE(known mainly for his production....most certainly not for his mediocre lyrics...not hatin' just sayin...) and Jay-Z(great emcee....slightly overated....tons of hits though...crossover appeal....has never trancended his genre even though he always tries it just comes out looking like he's a huge poser and is just trying to look arty and smart IMO) to a damn near perfect combo of Big Boi and Andre' 3000(the purest rapper alive who just happens to have so much talent oozing out of him that he also acts and does hit childrens cartoons) just screams "I don't know much about rap music." Andre' 3000 is the total package and would eat Jay-Z for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Ask any true, hardcore hip hop heads and it'll probably sound something like this; "Jay was dope on Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint but has had some majorly inconsistent albums and seems to care more about style than substance anymore." "Andre 3000, on the other hand, was the creative force behind four classic hip hop records(Southernplayalistic, Atliens,Aquemini,Stankonia)(all of which recieved HEAVY airplay) and one record that was a hip hop record but was so much more and was so ahead of it's time that it's crazy(The Love Below).
"Now question:Is every ***** with dreads for the cause??? Is every ***** with gold for the falls??? Nah...so don't get caught up in apperance...it's Outkast..Aquemini..another black experience.

Outkast would not only put on a great live show, but they would be a reunion too. This means a higher billing place just like the White Stripes, That's why I think either could headline Friday.
In terms of the Stones, I don't know enough about their current live show, but they would obviously be a huge get for Bonnaroo. I don't know about ticket costs rising however, it seems they're leveling off at the current level no matter who is headlining.

Do people forget that Jay-Z was rumored to be the third headliner this year...remember what AC/Superfly said about the Boss...it took two years...I'm thinking Jay-Z will be a headliner before OutKast is one due to two things: he's been in touch (and apparently owns part of company?) and he's releasing a new album soon. Now Outkast is also supposed to release a new album but they could be a preheadliner for all we know
I would love it if My Morning Jacket headlined Roo next year (hell, I even started the "should MMJ headline" poll), but in all honesty, I think at this point they'd be better suited for the Sunday pre-headliner spot. Sunday always seems to have the most epic pre-headliner of the weekend anyway - Snoop, Plant + Krauss, Wilco, et cetera. Maybe they could open up for the Allman Brothers Band or something. I'm sure MMJ will headline Roo at some point, but I doubt it'll be next year.

I agree with that. For me, the Stones narrowly edge out Pearl Jam, and Metallica is a distant third (though that's mainly because I'm not big into metal, not because they're not a great band). As I said, headliners do not make or break a fest for me, and I would take the Stones over a lot of other previous headliners from Roo, such as Bruce, Metallica, Widespread, Tool, The Police, Tom Petty and others - and that's definitely not an indictment of any of those bands.

If MMJ doesn't headline I would hope they get late-night Which again or even What if they plan on bringing that back again. After wandering into MMJ last year based on reputation I was blown away. They are Sun. night headline material in my book. I would even be happy with a Dead, MMJ, Jay Z trio of headliners. I just want acts that can put on a great show along with having great music. Is that really too much to ask
To me out of Pearl Jam, The Stones, and Metallica Pearl Jam wins. The Stones were great way back when I'm sure and I love a lot of their older music. I pretty much agree with what Jack said a few posts back. I just doubt that their stage show would be that great. I don't know how old they are but they don't look or act like they could captivate the Bonnaroo audience for 3 hours. Pearl Jam is an act that is barely in the decline of their career and they still put on a great show. I just feel like I would be leaving Rolling Stones after an hour feeling like

i saw daft punk at vegoose a few years back. tell me if i am wrong but i believe superfly put on that festival as well. might mean they are possible. rage against the machine, muse and the stooges (great festival) were there also. I would throw all of them into the hat for it. muse has that new album dropping too...
Well, it's still really early but my initial instinct is:
Fri (What): My Morning Jacket Fri (Which, Late Night): Arcade Fire Sat (What): U2 Sat (Which, Late Night): Daft Punk Sun (What): Dave Matthews Band
I think that it's possible that they add a Which show on Thursday, maybe starting at 10 and that it could be something like the Flaming Lips.
I also think that the Stones are a distinct possibility to either push U2 out or move them to Friday. In that scenario I could see My Morning Jacket preheadlining for Dave Matthews Band on Sunday and The White Stripes preheadlining for the Stones.
Finally, there is a possibility of them showing some country love with a Friday headling spot by the Dixie Chicks or some other country artist with some mainstream credibility (in their case, due to their "Eff You" to GW).
3 things. My Morning Jacket is not a headliner. Outkast is not a headliner. The White Stripes are not a headliner.
It's all a matter of opinion. I tend to think all of them as possible but iffy headliners. MMJ makes the most sense due to their solid history with Roo and that they are bascially the festival's signature band (although that could arguably be Panic).
I think that all three of them are more likely than some of the suggestions such as Iron Maiden or Rush, legends in their own rights and times but not the sort of artists that Roo is likely to hang its reputation as the destination American festival on.
3 things. My Morning Jacket is not a headliner. Outkast is not a headliner. The White Stripes are not a headliner.
One thing, explain.
All these artists would headline if they played Bonnaroo again or in Outkasts case the first time. The one on the cusp is MMJ, but I think they'll close out the fest in a couple years after they release an even bigger album. Next year I'm thinking we'll see Jim James with the Monsters of Folk.
The White Stripes. Look at the lineup from 2007. They are fourth, have they done anything to go down on the lineup poster? No, Jack White has only increased the romanticism of the Stripes by not playing with them for awhile. If they come back as a reunion, they would headline Friday no problem.
Outkast, same thing, reunion. One of the few hip hop groups that could headline Bonnaroo along with Jay-Z and Beastie Boys. They would have a completely insane event like show and couple that with it being a reunion and you have all the makings of a headlining show at Bonnaroo. If you don't think they could do it, look at how successful Andre 3000's solo albums have gone. He's been able to shape his inherent weirdness into some of the most accessibly great pop songs of the past ten years, maybe longer. If him and Big Boi were to get back together they not only have their solo catalogs but some of the best albums of the 90's of any genre to play. They are a headliner at Bonnaroo.

Ok, I'll explain.
First of all, let me say that when I am talking about "headliners" I am talking about the acts that normally play the What Stage Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights for at least 2 1/2 - 3 hours. First, the White Stripes. Sure, the Stripes were billed fourth in 07 as they rightfully should have been. They were only given an hour and a half though..As far as I know, 1 1/2 - 2 hours is the longest they are known to play. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Also, with the White Stripes (I've said this before) we know EXACTLY what we're getting. Jack White melting faces, while meg bangs on the drums much in the style that Michael J. Fox would nowadays. The only way I could see them headlining a night at Bonnaroo would be a Jack White and Friends deal....maybe bringing out some dudes from Raconteurs and Dead Weather, Thom Yorke, I think he even did some work with Beck. I still think the best spot they would ever get, they already got in '07. And if they were back next year with the same time slot, same stage, I wouldn't complain one bit. And let me also say that I would LOVE to see the White Stripes headline Bonnaroo, I'm a huge fan...just don't see it logically happening with the status of normal bonnaroo headliners (Springsteen, The Police, Radiohead, etc.)
Second, Outkast. This just seems like too good of a latenight for me. Out of the three in question, Outkast seems the most likely for a shot at a headliner. The reunion bit is there, (this would be a huge reunion, much bigger than the White Stripes) as they have been broken up since when, like 2000? Also they do a BUNCH of collabos...if Outkast plays, IF, my bet is they will get a latenight slot.
Third - MMJ - I am sorry if this offends anybody, but no way in hell would MMJ headline Bonnaroo. They are by no means headliner status. Even though they have a passionate fanbase, most of my friends don't even know who they are. I dont even really know much about them so I cant make a huge stand against them, but if they were to headline bonnaroo my respect for the fest would drop just a hair, because I know they can do alot better than MMJ. (Who's the odd man out here: The Dead, Stevie Winwood, Pearl Jam, MMJ?)
(Everyone please remember I'm not Ashley Capps and I'm not the one in charge of running the festival, so these are just mere thoughts from a concert lover and annual festival attendee. All this is friendly debate and I'm not trying to start a fight or raise tempers.)
Outkast and The White Stripes are NOT reunions. At all. Neither group has broken up - they're both just on a break from touring, with the members focusing on side projects. Outkast hasn't been broken up since 2000 - their last album came out less than three years ago.
My Morning Jacket will probably headline Sunday in a few years, but definitely not next year, and probably not 2011 either. I think they definitely could headline, but I think it'll be a little while before they actually do.
The White Stripes are my favorite band that's still together today, and I would absolutely love for them to come back to Bonnaroo - I just don't see them as a traditional headliner just yet. However, they could definitely "headline" with an opposing band on the Which Stage, like Beastie Boys and David Byrne this year.
I think that a lot of the folks calling for MMJ to headline are just seeing it as the next logical step. They've went from a tent to Which to a late night tent to a late night Which. They still have not played What and the only thing that makes sense would be a preheadliner or headliner.

Definitely. We're all just wondering what Ashley Capps will do next. We are all following his example before the altar of Bonnaroo.
White Stripes and OutKast I think are headlinet ready. Jack by this point could fill two hours and it would be nice for a headliner to sometimes just play that amount of time. OutKast would be huge as a headliner because they are a reunion and rare at this point, however I think Coachella would get them before us.
MMJ on the other hand, even in my heart of hearts, would not be able to headline Bonnaroo at this point. They just can't go anywhere but a headlining spot from now on, so we will have to wait for a new album. Until then, I can't see them playing Bonnaroo. So we might have to wait a few years for Jim James and crew to come as MMJ.

Outkast plan on releasing an album sometime soon.......a followup to Idlewild (according to Wikipedia and other sites) - so it's not a reunion. They didn't officially break up.

the white stripes would be in the same spot as the beasties. 3rd headliner. 2hour headliner set into a What Stage late night (Tool). That would be epic.
