Zac Brown Band. thought chickenfried was cheesy and like country but really could go without. this guy jammed out, played some great covers: devil went down to georgia, night they drove old dixie down, jolene, neon.

There were tons of surprising shows for me
1. Portugal the Man - Um. Really? One of the best Thursday night sets in Roo history, up there with Mute Math and Mgmt and Battles last year. They were absolutely on fire. 2. Katzenjammer - only caught the last 20 mins, but wow! High energy, great songs. 3. Galactic - again, only saw last 30 mins, but it was the most high energy 30 mins of the entire festival. And, honestly, I was never a huge fan of the band, other than Stanton Moore, until this show. 4. Phish (Friday) - Sunday's set wasn't as good, but as a newbie to the band, I was blown away on Friday by Trey's guitar wizardry and the genuine amount of fun that was going on was amazing. 5. Pretty Lights - amazing light show, great drumming, dance party. About 800X better than the 800x more crowded Girl Talk. 6. Ben Harper and the Relentless 7 - Wow. I knew he'd be good, but this was an amazing show, one of the best of the fests and he sure earned the late night spot he got. His guitarist was great, such an interesting style and feel, and their drummer was pounding the nuts out his drums, he was amazing. Harper himself had passion and his voice is amazing.

AMADOU & MARIAM - I didn't expect that they would get the crowd so worked up. Now I know why they're a hit in Europe. Check them out, OMG, I'm a fan for life! What a brilliant, exciting, never a letdown moment show.
BÉLA FLECK & TOUMANI DIABATE - Their Solar Stage performance was absolutely breathtaking. All I could do was smile and stare as they played. Amazing.
RODRIGO Y GABRIELA - It was HOT during their show, but damn, they've got it - and it was worth getting burned for. They are like, Guitar Gods from heaven.
gotta love double Glory Days too. I love when they started playing it the second time and you could hear the uncertainty in everyone's playing at first but it was already too late

I agree with the talk about Erykah Badu, I remeber when she first came around. I liked her music then, but was never a huge fan. But her set was amazing. I loved the beats and the message. She was fierce. Also, the band that was on stage before Badu...I may sound like an idiot saying this, but I dunno who they were (they weren't on the schedule). But I loved them! They were some kind of rhythm and percussion band and I just couldn't stop dancing.
I also checked out some Vieux Farka Toure before 'Roo and decided to check him out there. It was great! It made me just wanna get up and dance.
Rodrigo y Gabriela was almost the highlight of my weekend. I got into the pit to see them so I wasn't at all in the sun it was amazing.

They were the Sixth Ward Treme All Star Band. Someone suggested in another thread that they might be a combination of the Treme Brass band and the Sixth Ward All Stars, two second-line brass bands from New Orleans. Cory Henry, who also performed with Galactic on Friday, was in this band.
I thought The Knux were awesome. I had a lot of fun at their show. Crystal Castles and MGMT were also pretty crazy I thought. The biggest surprise was probably Cage the Elephant though. The lead singer was so energetic and crazy!
All I can keep thinking about is Portugal The Man. I had listened to them enough to know that they were my choice for their time slot but it was just not funny how good they were. it felt so special too after the crowd there at THAT TENT had a long break in between shows plus I kept thinking that I was probably witnessing the biggest and best show of their career. i saw them both sets but the electric set was epic and badass. on another note i saw chairlift's sonic set and wasnt really blown away but had a great time

1 Galactic. I expected this to be pretty good, but holy shit. This was outrageous. I didn't think 60 minutes of tombone induced face melting was possible. but it happened.
erykah badu-i didn't expect to enjoy this at all but she was really impressive. seemed like she was kinda drunk by the end of her set, which was pretty funny....then lodi dodi w. snoop was killler
snoop- was hopeful but didn't know what to expect. thought there was a chance he'd just mail it in, especially when he was late. but he played the hits w. great energy. and there was one point where i literally couldnt see the stage bc of the smoke. even if you weren't smoking, you had to have got a contact high at that show. it was ridiculous.

Galactic. I love Galactic, and expected a great show from them, but what they delivered was better than I hoped for.
They showed why they usually get the extended late night slots at Roo. They can bring it any time of day, and unlike some other bands, their shows "translate" just fine to daytime sets. But they deserve a late night slot.
Portugal The Man was amazing. But a band I think didn't get enough attention: American Princes in the Troo Lounge Thur Night. What potential. A big beautiful surprise. They played in the rain to a waterlogged crowd and it felt good, and the crowd loved'em. That tells me they are going places.
2/5- Papadosio 3/3- MUSE 3/12- John Mayer 3/19- The Werks 3/31- Passion Pit 4/18- Ben Folds 4/20- Against Me! 6/10- Bonnaroo 6/30- Eric Clapton and Roger Daltrey

Never heard a note until Roo. I'm sold. What a killer band.
I agree. I just started listening to their music about three weeks before and wasn't really into them that much. However they somehow beat out Santigold who I was looking forward to for a while. On a whim I decided to get up front and see what they were all about. After the long soundcheck, I was really about to leave and work my way out of the crowd. However after the first voice started, I was hooked for good. Best show of the weekend for me and a fan for life now. Those pipes on everybody and the small little touches they added to all the instruments and sound effects were just top notch.
1. Erykah Badu FLOORED me. Ive got a couple albums and Ive seen a little live footage of her but, in all honesty, I figured it would be a sort of "stock" hip hop show. NOT AT ALL. She fronts that band so well and the breakdowns she played on that beat pad were pretty kick @$$. The bass was so loud you could actually see the air in front of the speakers distort. I had such a good time @ that show and will be taking my gf to one of her shows asap (the gf unfortunately couldnt swing Bonnaroo due to work).
Seriously, in the pit for Erykah Badu I could not breathe during those opening bass lines. Her show was one of my highlights.
I've seen Bon Iver before, but that show was absolutely amazing. He rocked the hell out of those songs. Easily my best tent show of the weekend.
AA Bondy was awesome. But I gotta give this one to Janelle Monae. I wasn't planning on seeing her at all. Never even heard a note of her. Went to see her and I was floored. So much energy and the crowd was all over it. GREAT way to start off the Roo. Knew it would be a special one after seeing her.
I would follow Ben Harper to the end of the earth regardless of what he does but Relentless 7 far surpassed my expectations! It was 10 billion times better live than the album!
One of the shows I had such a great time at was Public Enemy. That rocked the hell out! Flava Flav's endless self promotion @ the end didn't even annoy me....I thought it was hilarious!
1.) Portugal.the man - So glad to see all the positive feedback for this band. If you missed them, you missed one hell of a show. Period. They rock. Loved, loved, loved them.
2.) Moonalice - I don't think anyone has mentioned this band yet and I'm not sure why. They were amazing and simply above and beyond any expectation I had of them. They played at the Troo Music Lounge on Friday afternoon but needed a MUCH bigger venue than that. I hope they come back to Bonnaroo next year and play a bigger stage. Awesome stuff!
3.) Dirty Sweet - Another Troo Music Lounge band that I heard while working the beer tent on Friday afternoon/evening. Never heard of them, even before Bonnaroo. But I found myself moving and grooving and dancing and smiling. I convinced a friend to get her book out and find out exactly who that was playing.
4.) Ben Harper - I simply ADORE this man and this was the first time I have ever seen him LIVE! I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but he exceeded every expectation I might have ever had. This was a top notch amazing performance that rocked my socks off, even at 3 in the morning. So totally worth losing sleep over, believe me.
5.) Wilco - I knew they would be good, but I was totally blown away by how much I loved them. The vibe and the mood of the entire show was to die for.
