Do walkie talkies work at the roo? This is my 5th roo, but I have never tried walkie talkies and I can't find a thread on it. Any suggestions for what kind to buy if they do work. Cell phones are unreliable I think.
walkie talkies are sketchy unless you have ones that have bunches of channels - cell phones used to be unrealiable and hard to use but since they added another tower - we had no problems with them last year - texting or calling
Texting seems to be the best bet. A lot of times it is too loud for walkie talkies or cell calling. I would get annoyed if I had to listen to a walkie talkie conversation while I was trying to watch a set. Be mindful to other music lovers.....text!
They are relatively inexpensive and they use different radio frequencies than most of the handheld radios out there and support a lot more people using radios on those frequencies at the same time. They even have text messaging built in for those times you want to communicate during quiet or loud times when speaking would not work well.
Yeah, I think you have to have the right kind. Maybe the ones described above??
But just having multiple channels doesn't necessarily work. We tried in 06 with a fairly nice pair of radios - channels and subchannels - but they never worked well enough to use. And, as mentioned above, there is generally alot of noise so when one of us tried to call the other they generally didn't notice it or couldn't hear well enough to make it worthwhile.
I find that texting does the job pretty well if you need to find someone inside the gates.
cheap walkie talkies arent a good idea, 100s of people bring them and you will find some interesting people, but you'll probably never use them to communicate with your friends.

My crew has brought a nice pair of walkie talkies with us every year we have gone; 06, 07, 08, 09, etc.. The first year was the only year we actually tried to realistically use them. We had no problems with their reception or anything, really not even a noise problem. However, a lot of people seam to have walkie talkies on the farm (rather you see them or not) and it is close to impossible to find a channel where you can get a direct answer from your desired party. It seamed we found ourselves in the middle of a big game. Now we just bring them out and some fun while at camp. To contact with your friends at Roo, we have found texting works best.

I used walkie talkies in 07 and had the time of my life talking to other people who were using them! It was cool getting to know and talk to a bunch of people at roo. We had the kind where you could buzz the other person so you didnt have to keep it on the time and ruin peoples music listening
I used to go to WEMF alot because it was free and I had alot of friends that were there, and I love house music. A big part of the weekend was sitting around the campsite talking to random people on different channels. Sometimes we would really confuse people and it was always funny.

I have used walkies at every roo I have been to and have never had a problem with them. There are times when you get mixed up with other people, but some of the things you hear other people say makes them worth it. My favorite thing I heard someone say last year was,"My wings broken my planes going down!" i have been quoting that guy all year and still cannot seem to stop laughing over it.

I have never used walkie talkies, but I did have some trouble using the cell...my texts would go through really late, and it was always a PITA to get a call out. We just usually be like, "OK, we're meeting at X spot (usually one of the bobbleheads) after X show". Works fine

I would be nervous about an Iphone as well, I dont have one but if I did I don't think I would bring it. do you maybe have like an old phone you could use just for the weekend?
Has anybody taken an iphone to Roo before? I'm nervous about taking mine, I'm afraid it will get messed up in the heat...
I wouldn't worry about the heat so much as I would it getting dropped, the dust everywhere, or if it hapens to rain while you're at the stages and have it with you. Living down here, the heat has never caused a problem with any of my devices.
