i don't know what kind of classic rock staions you guys have but i hear the boss at least twice a day when i listen to rock 102 in springfield, ma
me too, it could be acdc who i hear 8 times a day though
Well, I live in the south and if they play Springsteen, it is never anything except Dancing in the Dark, Born in the USA, Hungry Heart or maybe Born to Run and I'm on Fire. I obviously don't listen to the radio all day, but I'd say I hear him maybe once or twice a week.
Probably the most played Springsteen song would be Manfred Mann's cover of Blinded by the Light.
Of course, I can't get in the car w/o hearing Foreigner, so I'm not saying that this station is particularly good at dishing out a wide variety.

I blame the BCS for why Bruce ended up #1 instead of Phish. quacking computers...
that's awesome we should blame everything on the bcs
It really boils down to strength of schedule. I mean, Phish hasn't even played anywhere for the past few years, where as Bruce played an inauguration, a super bowl and wrote music that inspired Mickey Rourke to an oscar nomination in a month's time alone.
Further, Springsteen's playing in a tough conference...Dylan, Young, Petty, Waits...all the heavy hitting singer-songwriters.
Don't get me wrong. Phish has The Dead and DMB to contend with, but then you get towards the bottom of the conference and you have O.A.R. and Jack Johnson and it sort of drops off (although Jack living in Hawaii gives him a decided jet lag advantage over opponents so that can't be overlooked).
I don't know. I think we should just be grateful for a system that at least lets us decide at the Farm who's really #1...
Your first statement was telling me that I was a "noob" and that I basically didn't understand live music. Yet, you didn't intend you hurt my feelings?? Either you have spent too much time on a computer and not around other people or you aren't a kind person. You don't start off a discussion with an insult. If you did that in real life you are in for a major argument or the other person is just going to walk off.
You have to understand that Phish, aren't really that popular. All their albums put together probably did not sell even half as many copies as a single one of Bruce Springsteen's albums. I am not a huge Bruce fan. Lots of people aren't huge Bruce fans. Most people know Bruce Springsteen very well. Most people would like to see Bruce Springsteen. Most people in this country don't even know who Phish is.

I don't think you're giving Phish enough credit. Perhaps they aren't as popular as Bruce (who I think is terrible!), but they are a very popular band, even outside of the jam band community. I'm sure Nickel Back is more widely known than TV on the Radio, but that doesn't mean they're better. They are one of the best in their genre. Most people probably haven't heard their music, but most people have heard of them. They don't get radio play like Bruce, so naturally, not as many people will listen to then. You mark my words, people who have never heard Phish will become huge fans. I highly doubt anyone who watches Bruce's show is going to have a life changing experience. But I PROMISE you the same won't be said for Phish. A lost soul will come out of that late night Phish show a changed man...you'll see...
"I highly doubt anyone who watches Bruce's show is going to have a life changing experience."
That might be the most incorrect, naive statement ive ever read on inforoo.

Just for the record trash talking Phish on this board will be apt to get you griped at if you dont like that fold it till it is all corners and put it where it will do the most good. Secondly Most people in this country have also never heard of Bonnaroo and never would consider going if they had. Bonnaroo tends to get people who are very passionate about their music. Phish as a live act like the Grateful Dead has a set a performance bar not many other bands can match. Longest uninterrupted set of tunes, biggest single band festival, and several monetary ones. You cant do that if you dont have a pretty respectable fanbase. The big thing though is 80-85% of Phish fans have heard of Bonnaroo whereas 15-20% of Springsteen fans have. I could give a fig about top billing, but I can pretty much promise you 80-85% of the Bonnaroo crowd will be there for Phish not the Boss. Also you dont have to like them but your utter lack of respect for them is more than a little obnoxious.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it
I started seeing Phish in 1996. Saw them pretty consistently over the years until the breakup. I'd estimate I saw over 60 shows, though I can't be sure. I saw them in small venues, I saw them in huge venues. I did weeks on tour, and I did one-off shows when they happened to be near me. For many years (particularly 1996-2000 or so), Phish WAS my live music experience.
And if there's one thing I took away from that, it's that die-hard Phish fans can be some of the most closeminded people on the planet. The idea that a band could be better than Phish is repulsive to the Phan's brain. Tell them that Phish writes goofy lyrics, and they'll come back with some argument about the musicianship being so good. Talk about how many Phish jams tend to be nooding monstrosities that don't go anywhere, and they'll tell you all about improvisation. It's just the way it goes.
So, it doesn't surprise me that a Phish fan would be up in arms over the fact that Springsteen is top-billed. I think it's a ridiculous argument (who effing cares??), but still. Phish fans need to realize that not everyone is into Phish - for some people, long jams don't do it. For some people, semi-goofy lyrics about a mythical world made up by some guy for his senior thesis do not equal musical bliss. I love Phish, and I'm going to be at their Bonnaroo shows (unless they put them on a late night that conflicts with something else that I've never seen), but I recognize that they aren't the be-all and end-all of music.

Any actual documented fact of Phish ever setting a legitimate documented monetary RECORD would be enlightening. I don't know of it ver to happen. The Stones and other actual landmark acts have done so repeatedly. The Stones win the dollar contest every time they tour. If Phish has ever come into contention with their deadbeat unemployable wook following please post a link.
And please don't tell me how many of you are Phish fans with jobs. I know this. Some of you are my friends. The statement is intentionally obtuse. I would still like any evidence that a dollar amount record has been set other than perhaps selling out Big Cypress.

I've been to 3 Bruce shows, most recently in Saint Louis in Augest. The show was scheduled to start at 7:15, and the Boss didn't go out till 8:30. Realizing people were getting restless and anxious waiting for the show to start, Bruce went out and played a 3 and a 1/2 hour set, no breaks, Undoubtably the best show of that tour (from reading reviews and forums) and was hesitant to even go off stage then..Later i found out Clarence had a medical emergancy back stage which led to the delay. Clarence was right behind Bruce the whole show.
Bruce WILL play a great show, WILL be amazing, WILL have his audience eating out the palm of his hand..
And ROO'ers WILL be happy Bruce Springsteen headlined this show!

Why does Bruce S. have top billing? Roo tickets will sell out and it has absolutely nothing to do with him.
Maybe this will shed some light. Here is what Backstreets says today, including the perspective of one of Backstreets' writers, who has connections with Bonnaroo as well. The last paragraph is pretty enlightening,imo... ================================================
BONNA-WHAT NOW? Bruce and the band are slated to make a rare U.S. festival appearance this summer, with a decidedly different vibe than Harley Fest or Jazz Fest. Do we have to bring a hacky sack? Will the E Street Band be required to do a 20-minute "Dark Star"? Nah -- as Wikipedia says right up front, Bonnaroo "began with a primary focus on jam bands, but has diversified greatly in recent years." We asked Backstreets scribe Tim Donnelly to put this one in perspective for us. A long time Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival Guide contributor, Donnelly has covered the festival from the outside for Relix Magazine and from the inside for Bonnaroo Beacon, Radio Bonnaroo and B-Roo concert films, like Danny Clinch's 270 Miles from Graceland.
Some of you may know what Bonnaroo means. (Cajun for a "real good time," thank you, Dr. John). Some of you know of the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. Some of your kids may have gone, maybe even you (yeah, you) have been one of the hundreds of thousands that have descended on an old farm in Manchester, TN, every Father's Day weekend since 2002.
The three-day festival which takes place on June 11-14 is an epic marathon (noon til 5 a.m.-ish) of music that matters in front of an open-minded and collective tribe of fellow music lovers of all ages that hail from all corners of the world, who come to together for a diverse, shared experience. Whether you camp, roll with the RV, or get a hotel, every experience is measured in the tales that live on long after the music stops.
You have Springsteen. You have Phish. You have NIN. You have Elvis Costello. You have the "Queen of Bonnaroo," Lucinda Williams. But you also have Snoop Dogg, Erykah Badu and The Beastie Boys. Legends from Paul Oakenfold to Merle Haggard from King Sunny Ade to Gov't Mule, and everything in between from David Byrne to Al Green. The only criteria for Bonnaroo is that you have to bring it live like other past performers -- like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, James Brown, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Pearl Jam, Jack Johnson, Metallica, Widespread Panic, The Dead, The Allman Brothers Band, The Roots and My Morning Jacket to name a few.
So having Bruce and the E Street Band at Bonnaroo 2009 isn't a stretch, it's a natural fit.
"It's a life-long dream to have Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band play at Bonnaroo," Bonnaroo's Jonathan Mayers of Superfly Presents told me this morning. Man, if 2009 ain't the year for dreamin' or what?"

Ill disagree with this on the fact that whether Phish is there or not 80,000 people will still be there at Bonnaroo. Yes while many of these people will enjoy the Phish show, to even attempt to come off like Phish will be enjoyed by that many more people than Springsteen is ludacris. To say that 80-85% of the people will be there for Phish? really? How bout I can tell you that 80-85% of the people there were going regardless who was headlining. I dont like phish, will probably check out their show only because that will be the only thing going on at the time. Show me these records they have set. because what I can show you is Madonna is the top grossing tour of all time.....does that now make her better than Phish in some way. Or the rolling stones? America voted Bush into office for 8 years it doesnt surprise me that so many people lumped together could be so ignorant

I am getting out of this argument I never actually even questioned who had top billing. I still think the people who are there for Phish vs Bruce will be 80/20. I dont mean this as a slight on teh Boss I am just basing this on the Bonnaroo crowd. Hell I think my Mom is gonna come for him, and I have been trying to convince her for years.
Just like Jesus. Who by the way, thinks that Phish sucks. He told me so last time I ate peyote. ;D
this reminds me of a quote from Quanah Parker who founded the Native American Church and described the use of peyote in religious rites saying, "The white man goes into his church and talks about Jesus, the Native American goes into his teepee and talks TO Jesus."
"There is an ancient celtic axiom that says 'Good people drink good beer.' which is true, then as now. Just look around you in any public bar-room, and you will quickly see: Bad people drink bad beer. Think about it."
