Saw The Campaign this weekend. Mixed review. There were some absolutely hysterical moments, particularly scenes where everyone is "being honest" but they couldn't sustain it for long. Funny but I doubt classic.

Even though I'm a fan of Galifianakis, I am about a decade overexposed to Will Ferrel, and the previews don't look particularly funny to me... However, I have read that Zach is pretty much playing his Seth character, which alone makes it something I'll have to look into. Not expecting much (really can't tell you the last time I thoroughly enjoyed something with Will Ferrel), but I'll get around to it some day, for sure.
Going to be checking out the Criterion version of Videodrome later tonight... haven't seen it since high school, and I think it's about time to give it another viddy.

Embarrassed to say I've just watched Fela Kuti - Music is the Weapon for the 1st time. Fascinating look at his life and politics with small amounts of his music throughout.

It'll work just fine on tv, I agree on Ferrell and the overexposure. Interesting perspective fo rus being in NC as well.

Haven't seen The Campaign, but I love Ferrell as well. Admittedly I like him better in smaller supporting roles like in Zoolander and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, but anytime he teams up with Adam McKay (Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Step Brothers) I laugh my ass throughout.
Ferrel can be funny and is a seriously talented comedic performer, but he just chooses some god awful movies to be in. In my opinion, of course.... Now, I will say I enjoyed his over the top, pseudo Ric Flair role in Eastbound And Down, but for the most part, it's the same tired presentation that they get out of him for everything he does.
but for the most part, it's the same tired presentation that they get out of him for everything he does.
Unfortunately, that seems to happen with a lot of comedic actors nowadays. They find success with one movie role, and either them or studios try to replicate that same success over and over and over, i.e. Adam Sandler with the boorish idiot and Vince Vaughn with the sarcastic but somemwhat endearing a-hole.
Oh god, Sandler is about the worst when it comes to this... his earliest stuff on SNL was good, but when he became a feature player and started doing those movies, and became a huge crossover star, I just wasn't buying it. Now, here in the last decade or so, he has been given the opportunity to actually act in a handful of movies... haven't seen Spanglish, but I have had people tell me he was good in it, I thought he was incredibly impressive in Punch Drunk Love.... he was totally detestable in Funny People, in a good way... I mean, the guy has performance talent, clearly, but he has an inarguable track record of horrific comedies (whether he was in it, or just wrote it) in at least the last decade (I'd say ever, but that's just me). His production company should really just go away.
I used to seriously love Sandler but he seems to be stuck making films for the same audience, again and again. It's made him a rich son of a gun but I've wondered if he wants to do more? Grown ups was awful but there's a sequel coming out...

I've had a copy on my coffee table the past couple of nights. I need to get around to watching it. I've already missed out on the early return discount from Hastings. It's just that there is so much good music distracting me.

Oh my word. I just looked at the cast list for Lincoln. Daniel Day-Lewis is just the beginning of the awesome. I am putting it in spoilers in case there is somebody that wants to be surprised.

Saw a great documentary last night called The Elephant in the Living Room. It's a look at exotic pet ownership in the U.S. with a focus on 2 guys in Ohio who though they are similar personalities represent two sides of the argument. Very well done.
I've seen some of his movies, but I have yet to really get what the whole big deal is about JGL... I mean, he's alright, but to me he just seems like an average, serviceable actor. Am I missing something, is there some performance of his that is supposed to blow me away or something?
I really am curious, because he seems to be one of the most well respected young actors in the industry... I just need pointers as to how to understand it.
I have not seen that, and thanks for the suggestion!
Looking at his IMDB for refreshing, I've seen 500 Days Of Summer (he played a standard normal guy), Inception (again, normal guy), 50/50 (yet again, normal guy), and Brick (I think the movie is overrated, but he was admittedly the best thing about it)... can't say I've seen anything else from him, feature film wise. I guess one thing you can say about him, is that at least he doesn't overact. Maybe... to the contrary?
