in the scrolling headlines at the bottom of cnn they have one that says the police are playing the 4 day bonnaroo music festival along with tool, the white stripes and wilco. not sure how they missed one of the headliners and a member of the grateful dead. damn maybe i need to worry about getting my ticket earlier this year.
*cough*mainstream*cough*too many yuppies*cough* ;D
also when they just came back from commercial to anderson cooper 360 they were leading back in while playing radioheads airbag

Roo gets on CNN every year. Before, during and after. If it were mainstream you'd be seeing ads on TV for it.
That's kinda funny Roo ads. "Sunday, Sunday SUNDAY! Live at Bonaroo, it's Panic Panic PANIC!!! with special guest, anyone back stage wandering around around AROUND!"
At least that's how I thought a Roo ad should be like.
I dont know how I would react if I saw and actual commercial saying "come to Bonnaroo". maybe I would cry a little but hopefully we wont need to find out.

A) thats funny kudos B) your from cincinnati also, so I'm giving you karma.
well they may get on cnn every year. but to list the police, tool, wilco, and the white stripes is what i am complaining about. wheres the non-mainstream headliner and acts? are wilco and the whitestripes seriousy the next biggest bands at roo this year? atleast your commercial had panic in it. not that very many cnn watchers wouls know who wsp is anyways.

They could put Bonnaroo as a product placement in the middle of the OC for all I care, as long as they keep delivering a product that is as intensely quality as the last few years.

CNN is obviously going to mention the more commercially recognizable bands. They're not trying to faithfully depict the incredible talent or diversity that Bonnaroo represents. They're just trying to catch mainstream America's eye for a second or two, not inform anyone about the true nature of the festival. Most people wouldn't even notice or recognize names like Bob Weir, STS9,SCI or Widespread Panic and, personally, i'm quite grateful for that. CNN mentioning Bonnaroo, in passing, in the most casual "scrath the surface" kind of way is nothing to worry about, in my opinion. Considering the enormous money-making machine that Superfly/AC have created, I think it's amazing that Anderson Cooper isn't doing an "in-depth expose" live from the farm right now. It's impossible to keep something this BIG an underground phenomenon forever but, I think SF/AC are doing an excellent job keeping it serious and credible. I'm glad they're handling it the way they are, personally. ... and Anderson Cooper has used Radiohead's music on his show for acouple of years now, it's nothing new.

i agree with what you have said. thats why id prefer they give a real assesment of roo. not just throw something out to excite the mainstreamers. i understand why cnn did it. but it leads me to believe that it will be a much different crowd this year. this lineup is a much larger mainstream draw then last year was. an i also think it might actually sell out quicker because of things like cnn covering the mainstream portion over the rest of it. they are talking about bonnaroo with tool, the police, the white stripes, etc.. on pop radio stations now. my friend even heard it mention of it on a mainstream country channel. apparently some of the names i dont recognize must be mainstream country groups.
and ive been watching ac for years. guess i just never noticed the radiohead before. i tend to just leave it on and listen when they are covering something besides anna nicole or whatever the worthless story of the day is that day.

I see what you're saying but I think, that even if CNN does entice more mainstream yuppie-types than usual, that it won't effect the crowd all that much. When "they" actually start looking-into it, finding-out the ticket prices, other artists and actual logistics, alot of them will chose to just stay home. Major media coverage will definitely bring-in some newbies but, no more than usual.
ya but on the same token when the normal roo goers see the price for roo, and notice that all the bands they want to see at roo have better timeslots the weekend before roo at wakarusa for half the price i think alot of them will just go there. or 10klf, or all good, or the vibes. i know i think the sky is falling as far as the crowd changin every year. but this lineuo takes it to a whole new level. its not going to hurt roos ticket sales. they may even sell out quicker, but i think they are going to be selling them to alot of new rooers and less return rooers.
and the yuppie type people have more money then the hippies. hippies dont spend money at fests. they are partying and saving enough money to make it to the next fest. and 250 is pretty steep for having half of wakarusas lineup with a bunch of mainstream acts thrown on top. good mainstream acts. im excited to see them. but more mainstream then anything roo has ever seen before.

A cincy person, I'll abuse my mod powers for a bit and give you five karma. Cause well I'm a bit drunk and your from cincy. If you call it the Nati I'll have to take away 6 though.
It's CNN how many CNN watchers know who Panic is? The white stripes are played on the radio so that's at least something for the average CNN watcher. They pander to whoever gives them money. The fact that most of the people that watch CNN grew up with the Police it's easy for them to show it. It's CNN for crying out loud. I doubt we'll see much more of a different crowd than years past. Every year I've gone (The last four) the crowd changes just a bit. There used to be more wooks, more older hippies. Not so much anymore. Same vibe overall just a bit different. You don't spend 250 bucks for one band. Every one I've met at roos past has been the same for the most part, there to enjoy the music. No matter who is playing.
Dave Matthews is the pinnacle of mainstream. He's been the college campus frat boy wet dream for a decade now. Tool is NOT mainstream, I don't know how you got that in your head. On one board someone's arguing that Tool can't even sell enough tickets to fill an arena and here they are some Mainstream Mtv act with millions of fans... will someone please pick just ONE absurd premise to complain about at a time please?
well mainstream involves more then just mtv. its the contests and hype that is going on at pop rock/country radio stations that worries me. and its not just tool. a much larger portion of the lineup falls into the more mainstream category. and 2 of the headliners. possibly 3 if widespread plays thurs. at 8 like their myspace says. i dont listen to the radio except when im in a friends car. but i hear tool played on the 'hard rock' station quite a bit. and you hear the police, fountains of wayne, and the white stripes all over the pop/classic rock stations. im really looking forward to tool, the white stripes and the police. but it is by far and a way the most "mainstream" of all the roos. you may like it or dislike it. but its the way it is. and its the way its gone a little bit more every year. i hardly ever hear dave on the radio. it does happen, im sure. but he was in lineups where the other 2 headliners and the opening headliners were no wehre near mainstream.
the most mainstream friend i have called me today saying he heard about roo and dierks bently playing there on his toby keith/billy ray cirus radio station. i dont know who he is. but judging from the sad radio stations that are talking about him and roo it cant be too great. i will check it out before pasing judgement though. but it concerns me that my friends who like toby keith, my chemical romance and new metallica are hearing about roo in a way that excites them about it. the same people who a couple of years ago were saying who wants to go see bands noone has ever heard of?? are now hearing about it and considering it.
I honestly wouldn't worry about country fans coming to Roo. Nashville has the CMA music fest, and it's usually the same weekend as Bonnaroo. They get to see about 30-40 country music artists, I think it's cheaper, and there are meet and greets and stuff like that.
Dierks Bentley is country, but he's not "Toby Keith" country or anything. Don't worry. He's probably about 30 years old...he's more rock country than anything. If people want to see Dierks Bentley, they can go to Nashville to see him. He plays all the time. They really won't shell out over $200 just for him.

Hahahaha... I'm laughing so hard right now...
You know how many times I heard "Truckin'" on the classic rock radio station the other day?
wow you guys must have better radio sations then we do. ive never heard the dead on the radio. but we can get together any group of random people from the ages of 15 to 35 and ask them to name ten dead songs and few will be able to do it. now ask them to name ten tool songs, or pearl jam, modest mouse, white stripes, deathcab for cutie, beck, cypress hill, common, etc... and they will do much better. in fact i think alot of them would have trouble naming 3 dead songs. but if you think the dead are mainstream like these othere bands im not sure what world you live in. and if this isnt the most mainstream lineup roo has ever had i have no idea what world your living in. to some its an improvement, for others its selling out. and there are people that land everywhere in between those 2 points. not an us versus them type thing just some people are into differnt things.

Make your way tp Philly, listen to 93.3 WMMR. Great rock station, been on the air 25 years. Yesterday on my lunch break, i heard a dead song, as i do at least once a week, followed by a pink floyd song. At least once a month he also does a Dead block. I guess it helps that the afternoon DJ who is a big hippie, whos favorite band is the Dead, is also the Program Director, and has been there all of its 25 years. Pierre rObert' is the Friggin MAN!!!

I dont even want to talk about radio in NY anymore. Never really did. The only time I ever use to throw the radio on was when Stern was still doing a public show. Rock stations out here blow the big one. Krock use to play garbage, then they went to a more alternative layout for a year, now its literally 90% talk radio.
I was born in the back seat of a Yellow Cab in a hospital loading zone and with the meter still running. I emerged needing a shave and shouted 'Time Square, and step on it!
I think a lot of those kids would know some Dead songs, they just wouldn't have any idea it was the Dead playing them. As someone who has never been into the Dead I found this to be the case as I started exploring their catalog. I found out I knew tons of Dead songs, I just had no clue it was the Dead playing them. They were just songs I had heard plenty before in random places but never knew who the artist was.

the only dead song 93.3(wmmr) plays is touch of grey (or at least that ive heard, ive been listening for about 20 years now). but yeah, if you've driven across the country you'll realize philly got lucky on radio, we have a few decent stations.
plus we have 88.5(wxpn) university of pennsylvania public radio.
monday nights 9-10 jam nation followed by the dead hour 10-11. and they play good stuff all the time, check that station out if your in the area. or head here www.xpn.org/ if you like the station DONATE SOME CASH TO HELP THE CAUSE.

To hell with the differences between mainstream and jam and indie and etc. All the music at Bonnaroo is great music, mainstream or not. The vibe will always remain the Bonnaroo Vibe. It will not change. Don't worry.
PS, for the record and not for senseless bickering, Wilco isn't mainstream. They're indie and not all that well known outside of the indie circuit. Tool is mainstream and constantly played on the radio whilst being worshipped by thousands of high school kids and fratboys who don't understand the depth of their music, but they are amazing and nothing changes that. End of story.

The same exact conversation went down last year, and it will go down again next year. Turn on your local top 40 station, listen to it all day, and I would be surprised if you hear something from more than 1 or maybe 2 bands on the lineup. You can't see all 100 bands in 4 days anyway.
A buddy of mine is seriously considering going because of Tool alone, plus Clutch is there and he hasn't seen them in a while. This is a buddy who likes alot of music I do not (mainstream harder stuff). He also is one of the coolest people I know and is a great person to hang out with. I don't think it's that big a deal that some new people are coming as long as they are coming for the same reasons any of us have ever gone: to have a great time and catch some great music.
