Did you see them at Reaction NYE? I went by their set right as they were playing Love Again and thought the audio sounded horrible.
Yeah, I was on the rail for most of the show. I saw you talking about the Chance the Rapper set in your best shows of the year. I figure I should mention Chance's set wasn't 35 minutes. He started before his scheduled set time and ended early. It was only 50-55 minutes but if you showed up late, you missed the best parts.
Neat, who else did you see? Also, I'm an idiot for thinking Chance only played 35 minutes. I was even at that stage for all of the floozies too, but apparently my group and I were more inebriated than we thought...
My friends saw Bassnectar at Roo while I was at the Superjam and they consider themselves Bassheads now, they won't shut up about him. I know one has seen him multiple times since Roo, including NYE, and has been trying to get me to one of his shows since. Maybe next NYE I'll give in and see him, or perhaps at that BassLights event if it continues this year. Your positive review kind of nudged me in the "you should give him a chance" boat because I've been hearing that for awhile now.
We all approach music with some preconceptions and even prejudices. For me these have grown stronger as I gain more live music experience (read: get older), but I actively try to keep an open mind, and will give anything an honest chance.
I like Bassnectar's studio work, even love a few tracks, but I really only ended up at his Roo show because the Superjam was so insanely packed. Screw it, I'll go see Bassnectar for the first time, it'll be a good time, big dumb fun right? But my expectations were turned around by the set. Sure there were periods of big dumb fun: familiar hip-hop lyric samples, drops, all that kind of stuff. But what struck me was the set was way more beautiful than I expected it would be. Someone can feel free to give me shit for using that word but I've run the narrative in my head over and over since that show and I can't think of any other word that better describes it.
I left that set not feeling all drained and happy like it was a party set, I left energized and introspective, like I've just seen a show with real artistic merit.
So I'm definitely a basshead for sure, NYE 360 just reinforced that fact. I won't be following Bassnectar around the country or anything, but I definitely see myself catching him anytime he is nearby or at a festival I'm at. You should definitely check out a show with your friends. Worst case scenario you have a good time with your friends and get to look at some neat visuals.
Great write up, in the same ballpark as what my group members said! I'll have to let you know if I do ever make it to a show.
Run the Jewels need to switch up their setlist or I'm done seeing them until RTJ3.
They have what? 21 songs? They tend to play 14-16 songs per show (at least the two times I saw them). Doesn't leave a whole lot of room to switch things up. I'm sure RTJ3 will be out in time for a fall 2016 tour.

First night was Bonono, chvrches, Run the Jewels, and a lil bit of Deadmau5. NYE was badbadnotgood, purity ring, chance, and skrillex. I also saw Cherub for 2 minutes and had to leave. They suck but their fans suck more.
We did Thundercat (left after three songs, quickly found out he wasn't for us), Joywave for a bit, Jamie Jones, Chvrches, Deadmau5. NYE was Mija, Badbadnotgood, Autograf, Floozies, Chance and Skrillex/Get Real (regretted leaving Skrillex for Get Real, went right back after 15 minutes). How were Purity Ring and Bonobo? What was bad about the Cherub fans? It seemed like the smaller stage was never really that packed so I'm curious as to what happened? What'd you think of everything in general? I was pissed that the first night my girlfriend and I were able to bring in unopened water bottles but the second night we couldn't (not to mention there weren't even any refill stations so the only options were the $5 bottles). However, I never really felt super crowded until right before Skrillex and also right before Deadmau5. At the second stage we always had as much room as we wanted.
I've listened to Bassnectar for years but have very limited experience with his live shows, only full show I've seen was his set at Bonnaroo last summer.
Had a blast of course, the visuals were great, music was great. I think he does a good job of mixing the party music with the weird spacey dark music. Venue was great, sound was loud and clean from where we were in the stands. And the fans were great too, at least where we were everyone was friendly, respectful, and conscious of personal space. Honestly the fans looked acted and smelled more like Phish or Umphrey's fans than those kids you see on the Ultra webcast.
The show was sold out and there were plenty of people there but in no way did it look like a sold out show. Multiple empty rows at the top of many sections, and the floor had lots of open space as well. Not sure if they intentionally undersold it or if a lot of people just didn't show up.
Definitely a great time, would attend again in a heartbeat.
Some of the bigger producers/dj's, and in particular Bassnectar & Pretty Lights, do have a fan base of people who actually like and appreciate music. Both catch a lot of flack on these boards, and probably some of it deservedly so. But their real fans aren't the a-holes running over people to get to the front. In fact, some long haired, shirtless idiot went after my oldest's throat after he told the guy 'excuse me' as said shirtless idiot was elbowing his way through the crowd (btw, this was at BassLights). He, his brother and another friend grabbed the guy buy the hair (apparently a large strand came out) and arm and escorted him out of the way. Everyone else in their area was also perturbed by that individual, but he had to be dealt with. He didn't return later. And you hate to have to deal with that b.s. But it's not everyone. It's a few can't yet handle their shit morons that often come with the territory at an EDM show. It kind of reminds me of some of the crossover shows in the metal/punk years, where the metalheads who didn't understand hardcore would stand around a circle with fists cocked in case someone ran into them. Last time I had one directed my way was at Soundgarden in 1995 (literally 10 years later). The crowd was going wild and some dude on the rail protecting his gf tried to come at me because I got (clearly) pushed up that way. I should have cracked a bottle over his head, but I'm not the violent type. Exhorder (old NOLA metal band) had to train their crowd that the point of slamming (aka moshing) was not to hurt other people. It was just a fun way to get out violent aggression without mal intent. Duh. That should have been obvious.

deerhunter was fantastic last night holy shit. got second row and i arrived only a few minutes before the first band went on! i went around back at the venue, and met bradford cox and chatted for a while, and got a picture. it was such a neat experience. anyway, definitely check out deerhunter if they tour near you. i had a really great time and danced with and met some cool people!

billybaroo How were All Them Witches last night? Decent turn out for the crowd? Curious how their tour is selling.
Not great. Smaller venue. Place was about 2/3rds full but this was also a part of a 5 day fest the smaller venues put on in January so a lot of those people had fest passes.
The guitarist didn't love the crowd. He gave the singer a look, put up one finger, then did a cut motion across the throat. They played one more song and left, no encore. They only played 55 minutes. I enjoyed myself though.
Damn, too bad to hear about the crowd/band interaction.
Austin seemed to be into them last time they were here opening up for The Sword/Kadavar, so hopefully they pulled a few new fans from that show. It's at a pretty small venue in Austin, but hoping it fills out for them.

Some of the crowd was really into the show but I was standing 2nd row, front & center and the two people behind me shouted over the band the whole time about how one of them once set up lighting for a Kansas show and how the people in Kansas was really cool. So I get why the left, overall the crowd was dead.
All Them Withes were the headliner for this show. I think you should check out the band that went on before them 'Old Baby'. They reminded me of All Them Witches but if the influences for ATW are Zeppelin/Sabbath, this band's would be Tool/The Doors. I enjoyed their show a lot.
Seems like the guys in ATW must be assholes. Why wouldn't you want to hear about lighting for Kansas while you're playing?
I was already planning on checking out the opening band, but you really just sold them to me. I always try to get there for the opening bands at shows, I've been caught off guard by amazing performances that way.
Let me know how it is. I'm going later on in the year.
it was good. Pretty much what I expected. They played for about 2 hours. Ozzy's singing is a little hit or miss but that was to be expected.
Yeah, was gonna come here to say the same thing - I loved the show but Ozzy's voice seemed noticeably worse then when I last saw them in 2012. His charisma more than makes up for it though IMO. Plus "Hand of Doom" was really cool.
Dug Tool more in Pensacola (way smaller venue, way better seats)
Primus was way better the in nola though, and they had Danny Carey and Justin sit in during a 15+ minute Southbound Pachyderm. I like Primus about 10x more than Tool so that was f'n awesome for me.

I thought the sound for Tool was better in Pensacola, but the overall show was better in New Orleans. I was highly disappointed I missed most of Primus in Pcola, but damn if 715 isn't early for a show. We usually go out between 10 and 12, but I guess I just don't go to enough arena shows anymore. Also Post Pluto at Handlebar aftershow was pretty good. jabco picked up 3 Phish covers among other shit.

Hit--War Pigs Miss--Take Me out to the Ballgame
Lmfao. That was my argument with anyone who thought his voice was off on Halloween. Shit; I was screaming the words to everything, and I'm sure I sucked worse.

I saw Past Pluto again at this Mardi Gras masquerade party and they were def better than the first time I saw them. The singer though, I can't get past him. He's just mixing too many 90's singers together and it cheeses me out. Eddie Vedder/Scott Weiland/Brandon Boyd/Layne Stayley etc
He's trying to be Jim James/Chris Robinson to me. But yeah, I'd forgot I'd seen them open up for Dragon Smoke over in Mobile last year. They were definitely way better than what I (didn't) remember.
Edit to say it's fn great. Small footprint for a stage limiting what they usually do. But it sounds really good. Super cool they are streaming this entire tour for free. Idgaf what anyone says, I love some Tribe live.

I love them too. They were great at Bonnaroo last year, and I also saw them in October in Minneapolis for the first show of this tour. Break Science opened for them and I got center rail for the entire show.

Agreed. It was easily my favorite set at Bonnaroo and also the best collective of a crowd I saw all weekend.
The rest of the dates for this tour they're streaming for free:
02/05 - Denver (Filmore) 02/06 - Denver (Filmore) 02/10 - Lawrence, KS (Liberty Hall) 02/11 - Urbana, IL (Canopy Club) 02/12 - St. Louis (The Pageant) 02/13 - Chicago (Aragon Ballroom) 02/14 - Chicago (House of Blues Chicago)
Here's the link. I'm hoping to catch at least some pieces parts from some of the remaining shows. We got it to work on XBOX 1 where xbox has traditionally been a hassle to stream anything they didn't have apps for. sts9.com/2015/11/free-video-stream-of-sts9-tour/

I never got a chance to post about the All Them Witches show I got to see a week or so ago.
It was incredible, easily the best show I've seen from them. They get better every time I see them.
The opener was From Beyond, a great psych/metal band from Houston/Austin. Reminded me of some sort of combo between Pallbearer, Baroness, and Kyuss. Doom/stoner/psych sort of stuff.
ATW played a full 90 minute set (your set billybaroo was definitely truncated). Show wasn't sold out when I got in the door, but it had to have been close to capacity when it was over. Glad to see a good crowd for them, think they won over quite a few people when they opened up for The Sword last year.
This show they definitely jammed quite a bit more then what I had seen from them previously. Assuming it's because they finally had time to explore in a headlining set. Had quite a few great little break downs in songs that I hadn't heard before.
Got to say hi to them and get my signed vinyl I won as well.
Long story short, I fucking love All Them Witches, and will see them just about any chance I get. Something about them just really connects with me.
Saw Anthrax open for Lamb of God on Monday. It was awesome! 2nd time seeing both, and both played longer than the previous time. Anthrax had a cool little tribute to Dio and Dimebag during the song In The End. Joey Belladonna was energetic as always, running from each side of the stage while shouting things at people in the crowd. Their new lead guitarist shreds. He's the dude from Shadows Fall. Much better than the guy they had before, who went on the join Volbeat. They played a couple new tracks from their album that'll be out later this month, and i thought those sounded very good compared to the stuff other Thrash kings such as Megadeth and Slayer have released in recent years. Coincidentally, LoG's drummer Chris Adler plays drums on Megadeth's newest album. This brings me to Lamb of God. The night before this show, somewhere between Austin and Corpus Christi, their equipment bus flipped over. Luckily no one was on that bus, except for the driver, who walked away without injuries. They managed to fix all the gear in time for the show, and the video screens were up. They included clips of destruction, depths of space, cells reproducing, and honored men and women of the US military. They played songs i never thought i'd hear them do live, like Blacken the Cursed Sun, and The Subtle Arts of Murder & Persuasion. They fucking killed it that night. If you're going to Bonnaroo, you'd be making a mistake missing their set, unless someone like Tame Impala or the Superjam was scheduled against them.
TL;DR: Went to the Anthrax/Lamb of God tour when it came to Austin. Anthrax was great. Lamb of God almost had to perform without most of their video equipment due to their equipment truck flipping over on the way from Corpus, but their crew is awesome and salvaged their stuff to produce an unforgettable show.
