I saw the North Mississippi Allstars Friday night at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, Phil Lesh's club. What made it extra special, was that Phil (who's undergoing treatment for bladder cancer) sat in for most of the first set. He looked well and had a big smile on his face as he, Luther, and Cody went off on these tripped out extended jams. An amazing night.
Saw Deerhunter on Friday in Asheville. While I loved the new Atlas Sound stuff, I wasn't blown away by Deerhunter. It was good not great sort of stuff. Then this happened. While I still don't 100% believe, it did made for a good story.
Closing out the set was a monster All For Nothing/Horses (Patti Smith cover) that I'm still humming.

Nathaniel Rateliff + Houndmouth + Leon Bridges last night
Nathaniel was the best by far, really got the crowd going. The horns and organ player are very talented and Nathaniel is a good guitarist. Should be a fun tent show in 2016. Houndmouth surprised me. I remember listening to their recordings when I was doing pre-Bonnaroo research this year and wasn't impressed. But they were very good live! Leon Bridges has a great voice, the backing band were tight of course. Great show. Only complaint was there wasn't too much added to the songs. Could have let the White Denim guys jam a little.
Seeing Joanna Newsom live was a borderline religious experience. I got a spot in the 5th row (was seated but GA), so I could see every facial expression she made and the sound quality in the theater was fantastic. She played almost two hours but it felt like only 20 minutes, was definitely over before I was ready for it to be.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.
!!! were so amazing the other day, super glad I got to see them again. And the weather cooperated too, not a drop of rain the whole show.
Openers Sally Crewe, eh, didn't really do much for me. Not bad, but certainly a pass from me.
However, Stereolad were fucking fantastic! Nic came out in a tiny dress, and did his best French accent for the show. They nailed the covers, and his stage presence is always fun.
Then came out !!! proper, and oh boy, they were fun! Crowd was super into it, and it was dance party central for the next hour and a half. I really do love when Nic gets down and dances with the audience.
Suriel, was the female back up singer at your show? Sonya I think was her name? She's the one that does the backup vocals on most of their records. I know last time I saw !!!, she was there too. However, I know she lives in Austin. So wondering if Austin just always gets the special guests brought out, or if they have her tour with them.
Never miss !!! if you get a chance, you'll always have a good time

Yeah, she was there and she kept mentioning that she is from Texas.
Are any of you familiar with the band Ghost? I saw them back in October and the live show was incredible! If they could get GWAR's latenight spot this year at Roo, it would be a hell of a show!

They're in Europe the weeks before and after Bonnaroo so I wouldn't expect them. They'd be cool though.

I had heard lots about them, but never checked them out before their Halloween performance on Colbert.
I was entertained and wouldn't mind seeing them live. A late night tent would be interesting.

They'll be at Download next year so maybe 2017. They strike me as a good metal band for Bonnaroo.

That's a great live video! But if you're on the fence about them, check this song out from their new album. Great stuff imo. Dad rock meets satanism. What's their not to like?
Foals are badass. The highlight of the year for me.
Yep. New songs are great live. Their last 2 shows in Chicago have been as opening acts for Cage the Elephant and Silversun Pickups so crowds have been lackluster. I need them as the headliner of their own show.
You see them at Q101's The Night We Stole Christmas?
Kind of wanted to make a last minute decision just to see them on their designated night, but I chickened out...because I'm weak.

Yessir. I bought mine around 7pm the night of the show. I chickened out the night before on seeing Perfect Pussy even though I had a ticket so I needed to even the score.
I got dragged to 21 Pilots (my gf's current favorite band, and a tumultuous point of our relationship) so making another night happen just didn't seem worth it.
I can't remember what year it was, but recently 101 had that event with Grouplove, Alt-J, Foals, QOTSA, and 30 Seconds to Mars. Got there just before Alt-J went on, stayed for Foals and QOTSA, left before 30 Seconds to Mars. Good night.

Ghost is the loudest band I've ever seen. First time, my shirt was popping off my chest. Second time, when I tried to order a drink halfway through the set, the bar was shaking and I could only point to communicate with the bartender. Punishing loud, which is fun, but damaging.

Ghost ain't that loud.
If you want LOUD check out Jucifer, Swans and Slayer.

From what I've read on here, I do not want to experience Swans. I can only take so much. I knew someone would bring them up after I brought up the "loud" factor.

Cage the Elephant last night was really fun. It was at Grimey's in Nashville which is tiny, about 75 people, so Matt was singing right in my face. Super awesome. Their new songs, for the most part, sounded pretty good.
2017: 2/24 Twenty One Pilots 4/1 Radiohead 6/7 Glass Animals 9/10 Modest Mouse 9/21 Arcade Fire 9/29 Kings of Leon 10/3 Foster the People 10/17 The xx 10/22 LCD Soundsystem 11/8 Bon Iver

I've only see Slayer twice but second time I saw them was not near as loud as the first time. I think Tom's hearing might have something to do with it. Anther band that is really loud is Sleep.
Loudest band I ever heard (in a small venue) was a hard rock-punk band called Legal Weapon who opened up for Circle Jerks at Jed's back in the 80s. It was one of two times I had an eardrum waiver inside my head. Their amps must have been cranked to 10. Damn. Humorous memory from that night was they were rebuilding the stage so the Jerks played on the floor. I remember headbanging with Mike from Spoiled Brats in the front row and trying to help them from getting knocked over by the crowd. I think that was Wonderful tour (heard American Heavy Metal Weekend the other day \m/ )
I've listened to Bassnectar for years but have very limited experience with his live shows, only full show I've seen was his set at Bonnaroo last summer.
Had a blast of course, the visuals were great, music was great. I think he does a good job of mixing the party music with the weird spacey dark music. Venue was great, sound was loud and clean from where we were in the stands. And the fans were great too, at least where we were everyone was friendly, respectful, and conscious of personal space. Honestly the fans looked acted and smelled more like Phish or Umphrey's fans than those kids you see on the Ultra webcast.
The show was sold out and there were plenty of people there but in no way did it look like a sold out show. Multiple empty rows at the top of many sections, and the floor had lots of open space as well. Not sure if they intentionally undersold it or if a lot of people just didn't show up.
Definitely a great time, would attend again in a heartbeat.

My friends saw Bassnectar at Roo while I was at the Superjam and they consider themselves Bassheads now, they won't shut up about him. I know one has seen him multiple times since Roo, including NYE, and has been trying to get me to one of his shows since. Maybe next NYE I'll give in and see him, or perhaps at that BassLights event if it continues this year. Your positive review kind of nudged me in the "you should give him a chance" boat because I've been hearing that for awhile now.

We all approach music with some preconceptions and even prejudices. For me these have grown stronger as I gain more live music experience (read: get older), but I actively try to keep an open mind, and will give anything an honest chance.
I like Bassnectar's studio work, even love a few tracks, but I really only ended up at his Roo show because the Superjam was so insanely packed. Screw it, I'll go see Bassnectar for the first time, it'll be a good time, big dumb fun right? But my expectations were turned around by the set. Sure there were periods of big dumb fun: familiar hip-hop lyric samples, drops, all that kind of stuff. But what struck me was the set was way more beautiful than I expected it would be. Someone can feel free to give me shit for using that word but I've run the narrative in my head over and over since that show and I can't think of any other word that better describes it.
I left that set not feeling all drained and happy like it was a party set, I left energized and introspective, like I've just seen a show with real artistic merit.
So I'm definitely a basshead for sure, NYE 360 just reinforced that fact. I won't be following Bassnectar around the country or anything, but I definitely see myself catching him anytime he is nearby or at a festival I'm at. You should definitely check out a show with your friends. Worst case scenario you have a good time with your friends and get to look at some neat visuals.
