We don't have forks, spoons, or knives. You have to bring your own. I feel like that pretty much would solve all problems. Unless somebody could be offended by another person's choice in fork... which, it sounds like is entirely possible at some of these places
I work for lawyers (though I'm just their lowly geek) - everything is about appearance. It's actually kinda funny b/c they're all liberals and really open minded... But there's some stuff that's just a necessity in their minds and stupid silver forks are one of them. bleh. Least we do a lot of charity and political stuff, so maybe it evens out a bit? I don't know.

I'm having an Office Space moment right now... and, well. I think I'm going to leave work early today... as in now. I really just don't care anymore. I've lost all motivation.
I so wanna go but one of hte booses just put in a surprise appearance and yesterday he called when I was about to leave 15 min early - I think he knows what's up - LOL

See, we can't supply our own party supplies because then somebody might complain about them. I work at a law firm too...and you're right, everything is about appearance. It drives me crazy! I hope I'm not like that when I'm an attorney. I'm going to own my own practice and people can wear jeans and tshirts every day if they want!
^^I spent the last 4 years of my legal career working in a firm like that - it was great - I only had to dress if going to court - got to keep my daughter with me at work until she was about 7 months old.
It was wonderful - then I went to Bonnaroo last year and came back to the news that my boss was closing the firm and moving to North Caroline - so here I am at the VA - doing nothing legal, paid $10,000 a year less, no where near the freedom that I had - but I can still wear jeans if I want.
^I've totally been thinking the same thing. I think my husband (and neighbors) would think I was nuts... But it really does look enjoyable. I had the same vision - ipod, backyard, finding my own pace and stretching out a bit... Then I thought of the more likely scenario of me smacking myself in the face repeatedly and cursing loudly (b/c of the headphones) and offending my neighbors... But hey, what does some string and a couple baggies full of rice cost? Like next to nothing... Thinking of trying it tonight.
Ha ha! Me too. Thought of using yarn or something but I'm afraid it would rub my hands raw. I love the idea of you trying it with your daughter. Sounds like a great way to bond. btw, there are some beginner how-to video clips on youtube that looked helpful.
Oh I am so excited. I am going to walmart tonight to buy the stuff. I figure when I get good enough I will upgrade to real poi/glowsticks. However, I tried to spin glowsticks at Roo and was bruised for a week, so I'm going to take it easy this time!
lol! I used to spin glow sticks in high school. I was never fantastic at it, but I do remember doing it a prom! hahaha! Everyone must of thought I was so lame, I was already in a pink plaid dress for god sakes! ;D
So I went to the beach party and yes it was pretty lame. It was at a hotel on the beach. It was raining on and off, so that didn't help. Half of the people who said they were going never showed up. The boys were all playing football. The kids were all in the pool, because there was a bunch of seaweed and crap that washed up on the beach. I've got a nice pool at my condo without all of the little kids peeing in it. The food was so-so, but at least it was free. If I felt like drinking I had to buy my drinks at the bar. So I ended up hanging out with my boss' wife (who's pretty cool) and the weird ladies who work in the office. Well at least I don't have to do that again until the Christmas party.
^sucks about the drinks... My best company party memories are always of seeing coworkers hammered and seeing a whole new side of them that I never new existed.
As for the spinning... I bought some shoelaces on my way home and have made my own little bastardized poi. They work well for trying it out... I used some dried peas and ugly fabric (and some almighty duct tape) to make them. Word of advice - weigh them to make sure they're exactly the same weight or they spin at different speeds.
But I don't think that's why I'm beating myself up with them so much... I think the choice of starting with Rusted Root as a background was a little ambitious... more advice - pick something slow to listen to at first.
