I may get smited for this but, it's how I feel.
I'm not a billboard, I'm not for rent, I'm not in P.R. and I don't wear anything on my "sleeve". I don't wear any band merchandise at all. I don't care who knows what music I listen to or what concerts i've been to. I'm not in highschool anymore and I refuse to dress like it. What's the point? I'm a dead-head? I'm a punk? I'm super-duper retro? I'm ironically hip? No, I'm me! I don't ever want to be labled otherwise. And, right or wrong, that's all a band T-shirt does. I won't give my money to a band so that I can walk around advertising for them. I'll buy their albums, I'll attend every concert that I can and I'll give them insane word of mouth but, I refuse to wear their "sandwich boards". I like a band for their music. It's a deeply personal relationship between us that a cotton flier only cheapens. It just seems like an adversely trivial way to indetify myself.
I just want to say that these are my personal beliefs and feelings. I mean no offense to anyone here. I'm just trying to express how i feel. If I have angered or insulted you in any way, please smite away. I won't hold it against you. Honestly, I'll appreciate it (in a weird way). If some of your beliefs/opinions don't evoke some sort of response, good or bad, what good are they?

^^^Well put, I have a few Pink Floyd and Zeppelin shirts I inherited from my dad, so I do billboard them a little bit but I totally agree...I dont need to be a walking billboard for a band. Me listening to their music and giving them props to everyone is enough for me. No smiting here, ill actually exalt such a comment...

Obviously, I completely disagree. I am a college student by the way, so I think it is fine that I wear lots of band t-shirts. No one judges my personality on the shirts I wear. Sometimes the shirts I wear are good conversation starters, but thats about it. Plus, this thread was about the band/artist apparel YOU have...so if you don't have any, this isn't the thread to post in. No hard feelings, no lost karma.

I don't see anything wrong with wearing a bands shirts...I mean, I'm sure that you have shirts with some form of logo on it....so therefore, aren't you indirectly advertising that brand by walking around with that shirt on? It's the same thing in my opinion.
I'm an old fart so I can't see paying $25-$30 for a shirt. In the 70's I had quite a few but that was when they cost less than $10. I have no problem with people who want to, I just save money for more concert tix.

i have quite a few concert shirts of bands and i have no problem with wearing them either ... a lot of hoodies also .... i have a signed foreigner shirt, with all of the original members, a couple of others, i would have to look ... i have an original woodstock shirt, with the bird on the guitar, but i would guess no one would even know what that one is, have to see if i can find it and i will post it, but it might be lost in this mess of stuff i have lol .. cr*****
Off the top of my head.... Pink Floyd, RHCP, Skinny Puppy, KMFDM, Faith no More, Ministry, Placebo, U2, Rev Horton Heat, Wumpscut, Apoptygma Bezerk, Bonnaroo (!), Lollapalooza...i know there's more.
I like to get concert shirts from the tour - f**k cake and how I afford my rock and roll lifestyle. I work.
I would expect this year I will get another Roo shirt - well, it's part of my VIP package... and the Police at Fenway Park. Oh, and if they sell Arcade Fire shirts in my size - I'm so in on that one... er, and Lollapalooza too.
The strange thing is that I don't wear them out all that much...but I like owning them. it's almost like I'm getting shirts to wear at other concerts. if someone wants to label me or whatever for wearing it - i guess that's their business. In general, I prefer wearing festival t shirts as opposed to individual bands.
However, I decided a while back that I wanted to be "beer t shirt guy" since I dont like sports / sports apparel.

Nearly every piece of clothing out there is an advertisement, and you can't control what people think of you. I understand your feelings, but forgive me if I think your a little delusional about your ability to control any company's ability to use you as a point of advertisement. From car logos to food wrappers to clothing labels to shoe decals, it's hard to escape it in our world. The only real way to avoid those kind of labels is to subvert them.
Oh yeah, I have a Tom Waits shirt I got from djtees.com that's falling apart. I have a Weezer shirt I never wear from high school when I was into them. And I have this Billy Joel shirt my dad passed onto me that his students made him. Billy's sporting a his 70s fro and it says underneath him "Only the Good Die Young." It's a great shirt, but very fragile, so it rarely comes out of the closet.

^^I totally understand and agree with you. I'm sorry if I came off in a negative way. I have major issues with wearing any "logos". But that's just my personal hang-up. I don't wear sports, music, humor or political clothing. I only wear stuff with no print or pictures on it. It's just my personal taste and I do not want to seem like i'm judging anyone else here. When I wear that type of apparel, I (personally) feel stupid but, that is entirely on me and my neurosis. My gf often wears many band shirts. My best friend prides himself on his extensive (and creative) collection of artist Ts. I, obviously, have no ill will towards them. I love them very much! Again, I do realize that I am decidely in the minority here. I just thought that I would add my $.02 to this thread. I meant no offense to any fellow Inforooster. I'm sorry if I spoke out of turn or if I chose my words foolishly! I love and respect everyone of you! Peace!

i recently bought a new Bob Dylan shirt to replace the one I wore down to nothing. I have shirts from many of the shows I've been too. My Morning Jacket, Josh Ritter, Ryan Adams, Wilco, Son Volt, Casper and the Cookies, Ben Kweller... those are just the recent ones. Oh, and of course my Bonnaroo 06 tee. I love wearing that and hearing the occasional person yell "Bonnaroo!" I also have some local band T-shirts: Nothing Still (I don't really like them, but the shirt was $2) and City and Sky (got it for free for dancing on stage like a drunken idiot. Hand painted shirt over another design. T-shirt was bought at Goodwill and recycled. The band just broke up.)
I agree that turning yourself into a billboard is silly and I won't wear shirts that advertise products. (Like Coca-Cola, sheesh, why do people think that's cool? Okay, you like soda, big deal) And I don't buy name-brand clothing plastered with the logo.
But music is different... I see nothing wrong with giving your favorite band props while at the same time possibly starting a conversation with someone of like tastes.
i have a lot of band shirts. not because i want to advertise for them, but because i love music and i love t-shirts.
off the top of my head, i know i have a couple of pearl jam tee's and a tank, a long sleeved hip shirt that is super cool, 2 or 3 zeppelin shirts, a godsmack tank, a smashing pumpkins hoodie, a methodical breed tank and tee (and a thong), a t-shirt from the butcher's hand, one from the haut chachis that just says "haut" and my very favourite is my mighty mighty bosstones tee with a picture of a nurse on it. i know theres more, but i'm not about to ransack my closet just now.
^Finally some other Godsmack love going to see them in a couple of weeks in Hotlanta.....
man, they gave me that shirt after they had me brought backstage because they wanted to meet "the crazy girl in the green pants" !!!!!!!
How freakin' awesome!!!!! Mental note - got to get some green pants for the Godsmack concert and act crazy - that last part not so much a stretch Too cool!!! Karma for that chicka!!

I'm a broke college student... so if the merch table doesn't have anything under 15 bucks i'm likely not to get anything... I have the odd Camera Obscure shirt from a club gig a while back and my dad got me a few vintage ones, and I've got an old ass Led Zeppelin one that was my cousins, but I tell you it didn't survive the 80's very well

and MickStPeter, I can definitely sympathize with you about being a broke college student. I buy a shirt once every month or so after I get paid since I get paid monthly. I basically burn my money on music/band apparel.
I have a rule that says that unless I've actually seen the band, I am not allowed to wear their apparel (just my own opinion, not judging others). This obviously sucks for those bands that are either dead or broke up, but I always buy something from every show I attend. I have several from local bands, a Lollapalooza, Rush, Cake, Mike Doughty, Wilco, The New Pornographers, ELP, King Crimson etc, etc. There are a lot. (Oh, and soon, I will have a Bonnaroo tee, yay!)
I agree with being a corporate advertising tool but I don't mind wearing a mom & pop t-shirt esp. if it concerns a hobby of mine such as beer. More people have talked to me about my Free State t-shirt (Lawrence, KS) because the back quote is "somehow, without beer, things do not go as well....." I do have a bunch of Phish stuff gathered over the years but I view that more as a souvenir of past experiences than an advertising statement.
