Okay, I realize a lot of people are too cool to use Myspace, but just so you know, you DON'T HAVE TO SIGN UP to listen to bands' music there. What makes it even easier is that Bonnaroo has its own profile at:
Even though the music on their player is sparse, they have handy links to a lot of the artists' pages in their "FriendSpace". Just consider this a jumping-off point for discovering new bands to check out.
On a related note, I was happy to see almost the entire Iron and Wine album is up for our listening pleasure.

I do have a myspace account but got bored with it really quickly but havent closed it just because I have found so many great bands through myspace. I highly recommend it!
have you ever noticed that a lot of bands have some of their more b- tracks posted on Mice Pace? I know that's not always the case, of course, but i don't rely on that premise for getting myself accustomed to a bands sound. I do think it's handy for bio's and tour dates and bulletin updates.
It may be equally lame; maybe, but i mostly use Youtube and every now and then i will torrent. I prefer youtube because i'm not stealing, i can get a pretty good idea of the live vibe, and i like being able to see the artists manning their instruments and gaining an understanding of the stage setup, etc.
Yeah, I've recently discovered youtube's utility for this, too. Good call. Even if the band doesn't have a video for a particular song, a lot of times people will record the audio of a song and just have a blank screen, some text, pictures of the band/album, or movie footage.
The great thing about Myspace, though, is that you can listen to a string of songs while doing something else instead of looking for something else every 3 or 4 minutes. The limit of songs on Myspace used to be 3 or 4, but now a lot of bands are putting up entire albums (and sometimes more).

other good tools are last.fm and pandora.com. just enter in artist name and it will search for them, then play similar artists. only sometimes its annoying because it plays a bunch of random shit you never heard of and you have to keep skipping through.

i've always done this. it's a great idea. i have found so many bands that i now consider "favorites" simply by being bored and searching myspace for good sounds.
