i haven't seen them with Johnny Marr, but at Roo 05 and ACL 04, I thought they were pretty bland/bad. I love Modest Mouse, too, I listen to them all the time. so I hope it was just a festival setting. I think they'd be better on their own, in front of their own crowd, in a small venue, personally. I've heard live shows, and they were much better than the two I saw back then.
It's one of those names, for me anyway, that make me say "yea, I love them, but will it be any good?"

i've heard mixed reviews about thier shows, both in festival setting and at smaller venues. in fact, i don't think i've ever heard anyone really rave about a modest mouse show, but i have heard a lot of people dissapointed. i really want to see for myself, it doesn't make sense that they are bad live, doesn't seem like thier studio stuff would be especially hard to replicate live.

i thought they were good in 05. it was the only time i have seen them.
I haven't really heard a lot of positive feedback on their live shows. In fact, I heard from several people that Man Man outplayed them the last tour...

To be fair, Man Man is a freaking incredible live band. Easily one of the most entertaining, energetic shows I've seen. Roo '05 was the only time I've seen Modest Mouse and I enjoyed it, but it wasn't great. Still, they're one of my all-time favorites and I'd be happy to have them back...but it's not looking like it'll happen this year.

Not a huge Modest Mouse fan....caught their '05 Roo set and was unimpressed...most bands would probably be outplayed by Man Man these days....would love to see Man Man added to Roo (think this is a strong possibility with a new album)

I'm really hoping they get added too. They'd fit in so perfectly at Bonnaroo it's ridiculous.
In 2005, i caught the Modest Mouse set in Convington, KY - Madison Theater the night before Bonnaroo.
I've been a fan since The Moon & Antarctica, and i have to say that were on fire that show and i really expected to hear great things about the set they were going to provide. They were extending parts and jamming out a bit, very tight, sounded great, plenty of energy, talking between songs, came off as very professional.
Maybe a couple of members were a bit hungover for the Bonnaroo performance or something?!
I think you guys are def in the majority in reference to the 05 Roo show. And Gouge is spot on... I've seen MM 4 times. Twice with Marr. None at a festival. Every show was a sweaty, rawkus blast. Not to say that they suck at festies, but a smaller setting is choice.
How so? I don't see or hear any "freaking lameness" in their work or live performances.
I think they're awesome song writers and insane performers.
I love them so much! 3 SXSW dates and 1 more the following month. I'm hoping to at least catch 2 of their performances. They're so entertaining, and their new single is awesome!
"mixed reviews" is right. modest mouse is one of my favorite bands. the first time i saw them, they were awful. the set list was questionable and yes, man man did outplay them. the second time i saw them, it may have been one of the best concerts i've been to. it was unbelievable. i think it all depends on what kinda mood isaac is in.
Pretty good at Lolla? They were amazing! That crowd went crazy for them! Crowd surfers left and right, I just wish there were more old songs for that set, but then again it was a festival set..

This is exactly what my friends who saw them in ATL last year said.
The only band I've seen live better than Man Man was Arcade Fire. But Man Man has a bit more white around the eyes.
The crazy thing is if you see these guys before a show you wouldn't suspect it. I got into a venue before doors opened and was just watching Modest Mouse do their soundcheck. Honus Honus was walking around, and you wouldn't have thought he was the crazy guy on stage two hours later.
