Hey everyone, I was looking around at some festivals that shared artists in common with bonnaroo and I stumbled upon Rothbury. Hadn't heard of it before but the lineup is sick and its the first year for the festival in Michigan. Has anyone else heard anything about this yet?
DAVE MATTHEWS BAND + WIDESPREAD PANIC + JOHN MAYER + 311 + PHIL LESH AND FRIENDS + PRIMUS + THIEVERY CORPORATION + SNOOP DOGG + MICHAEL FRANTI AND SPEARHEAD + MODEST MOUSE + STS9 (SOUND TRIBE SECTOR NINE) + YONDER MOUNTAIN STRING BAND WITH JON FISHMAN + GOV'T MULE + SLIGHTLY STOOPID + THE BLACK KEYS + GOGOL BORDELLO + CITIZEN COPE + KELLER WILLIAMS AND THE WMD'S + DEREK TRUCKS AND SUSAN TEDESCHI SOUL STEW REVIVAL + THE DRESDEN DOLLS + RAY LAMONTAGNE + THE DISCO BISCUITS + DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS + OF MONTREAL + GOMEZ + COLBIE CAILLAT + BRETT DENNEN + MEDESKI, MARTIN, AND WOOD + TAJ MAHAL + ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA + CRYSTAL METHOD + JJ GREY & MOFRO + THE GREYBOY ALLSTARS + THE SECRET MACHINES + BETH ORTON + BETTYE LAVETTE + JAKOB DYLAN AND THE GREEN MOUNTAIN REBELS + A3 + LOTUS + MIKE GORDON + YARD DOGS ROAD SHOW + STATE RADIO + THE BEAUTIFUL GIRLS + SAGE FRANCIS + TEA LEAF GREEN + EMMITT NERSHI BAND + RAILROAD EARTH + BASSNECTAR + PNUMA TRIO + DIPLO + FLOSSTRADAMUS + THE JUAN MACLEAN + EOTO + PANJEA WITH MICHAEL KANG + THE DYNAMITES FEATURING CHARLES WALKER + DJ REKHA + DEAD CONFEDERATE + DJ ROOTZ + MOTION POTION + SOJORN + BUSDRIVER ...with more to come.
This man came up to me just the other day, asked me I'd been born again. I told him, "I didn't think I had." That I had been rejected. But I think, Hell's got all the good bands anyway. And Bonnaroo.

Aside from the headliners, which personally don't do much for me, this looks pretty solid...zappa plays zappa and crystal method would probably be my highlights...when is this?
"Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel. I have always needed fuel. I am a serious consumer. On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio."
"If the sight of the blue skies fills you with joy, if a blade of grass springing up in the fields has the power to move you, if the simple things in nature have a message you understand, Rejoice, for your soul is alive."
Okay, I'm going to be short and not to critical because there are a lot of people who are excited for this new festival but....
People want to complain about Kanye, Metallica and Jack Johnson and then glorify a festival that features 311, Snoop Dogg & John Mayer? I'm not saying any artist is better than the other, but you don't get more sell out or more commercial than Snoop Dogg. I love him, but I guarantee you if you made up a list of a top 5 all time underachievers list for mcs, Snoop would easily make it.

I am so torn over this now! So many more bands I really want to see there vs going to a festival I know is so much fun! What to do?? If it wasn't for my warrant I have out in Michigan (for an unpaid speeding ticket on the way to Pearl Jam in 2004), I would already be buying tickets for Rothbury.

This is tough for me... NW Michigan is so nice in July without extreme heat and dust and only around 30-40k people are gonna be there, it's only 2 hours from where I live, and I can't afford both Bonnaroo and Rothbury

Hahahaha. Thats awesome. Mine is in Missouri when I finally got the speeding ticket. I ended up with three in under 2 hours. I got banned from the state. Check the statue of limitations. My guess is its like 2 or 3 years.
Awesome though. Karma for unpaid speeding tickets.

i dont feel like they are trying to be roo at all. the website has a totally different feelin (i dont want to use vibe cuz that term grates on my nerves) i mean you can argue that with the lineup but really most/all festies have crossovers.
i mean they are competing with roo, thats for sure, and are very smart. but i dont think they are TRYING to be roo. just tryin to be competition. like facebook to myspace. whatever you get my point. and fuck i want to go.
i don't really view it as a "VS" thing. I know that when we spend our days pining away on the message board dreaming of more festive days, that these things pop up, but to treat it like 2 sports teams slugging it out, it's just not the right attitude imo.
To me, Bonnaroo is the established fest that I've gone to every year and I live in TN. I can't miss it, it's like missing the birth of my kid or something (not really... but sort of). Rothbury is as new festival (remember the newness of ROO 02 anyone?), and I'm sure other people live closer to MI and can swing that much easier than a trip to TN.
It's not a win or lose situation. Both will be a good time. Whoever choses one or the other or both will have a raging good time this summer....
ps - i'm glad somebody is bring Crystal Method to a jamband fest. Shame on Roo for missing the boat on them....

I'm holding out hope form ZPZ... it'd make me very happy.
in recent months, the abused of the ZFT against fan communities have been rampant. Gail Zappa and her cohort our out to turn Frank's music, persona and even his imperial/soulpatch combo into a brand. unless ZPZ adds some heavy-duty guests (napoleon, ruth, adrian belew), i'm hesitant about ever seeing their show again.

To equate it to two sports teams slugging it out would be wrong. It should probably better seen as two corporations vying for your dollar. Trying too hard? As with any business they've seen a need and have figured out a way to meet it. Perhaps they've read these very boards, read all the bickering posts about peoples experiences last year, which lineups people loved, which bands nobody understood "why they were there". Maybe somebody read up on all those things (market research) from all the festivals around and put a new product on the market. They aren't trying to be Roo. I think they are trying to pick up all the money Roo might be leaving on the table as well as take some away by having a primarily "jam band" oriented line up. I'd guess it's by no coincidence that Rothbury came out of nowhere (at least I had never heard of it) days before Roo goes on sale.
I absolutely LOVE Bonnaroo. It is magical. But I can't afford both, (wish I could) the Rothbury line up is more to my personal taste. Plus with the temperatures in MI supposedly with highs around 80 I'll save money on Gold Bond

well said sir ( as always. karma. ) this is exactly what i thought at first look. not saying i wouldnt go, its just that i'm gonna be about 1300 miles away from it, and that makes it a little hard. especially when the Roo is a 100% go for me, and Lolla could happen as well. ;D
both fests look great in their own regards, Bonnaroo chose to go out on a limb this year and really pushes the envelope on diversity, thats great and promises to be a great time. Rothbury is a cool alternative for people seeking a more tailored lineup but promises to have a lot of opportunities to shake you ass of in the late night, OMG the late night possibilities! To each his own I hope everyone has a great time at all the shows this summer wherever they may be, its all music people! thats the important thing
