Metallica has one of the biggest fanbases on the planet. People like them. Are most of them the same people who like Gogol Bordello? No. How many Metallica songs do you think the average MMJ fan has on their Ipod? I believe if it were put ot a vote of ticket holders, Metallica would be ousted. I think most Roo-ers would prefer a blank on the schedule. I'm not really upset about their presence at Roo. I just don't see the logic in the evolution to this point from the last 2 festivals. I don't know who Superfly courted alongside Metallica. I would like to know who we could have had. QOTSA, Bowie, Rush, Prince, Beasties, Parliment, RHCP, Talking Heads, Primus, REM. Ill hold my final opinion until after the festival. As long as they have Sweetwater Blue, Foot Long Corn Dogs by the ferris wheel, arepas and Ben Folds ill be satisfied.
How is it close minded? Everyone has heard Metallica. Its not like it's blind hatred. If it was Metallica of 1987, no one would be complaining. They have gotten as bad as a popular band can possibly get, live im talking. Just unbelievable sloppy.

i want the metallica fans to stop saying those of us that arent fans are opposed to new music. we go to bonnaroo FOR new music. I am excited about listening to a lot of new bands, metallica is not one of them, not only because i really dont like them and they have no talent, but they arent NEW either. ive lived their entire career, ive had plenty of shots to get into metallica, and it aint happening

Guys...bottom line......I hated Metallica growing up...thought they sucked...saw them in 93 with Guns n Roses....blew those shitballs out of the water....have seen them live 4 times since, and they are great live....If you dont like them, fine...people thought Tool would ruin last year's Roo, and they were the best show there( besides Mule's late night jam ) Metallica, Kanye...these are 2 great acts....Jack Johnson and Phil Lesh..not so much...got to please everyone, and Bonnaroo has done that.....so you guys skip Metallica..ill skip Phil Lesh, and we will all be happy...see you at Roo '08...It will be great

When is the last time you happened to see them live? Ask anyone who has seen a show in the last 2 years, (Ive seen several in Europe)and from fans, people in other bands, etc all will say how tight they sound live now a days. If they had a sloppy period, it was mostly during the Load-Reload era live but Im telling you, they still bring it live. Watch Rock Am Ring from '06 (you can easily find a pro shot vid on youtube or in the trading community) or check out any of the vids from stuff they did in '07 in Europe.

This was me - first time I ever saw them was that tour w/ GNR and Faith No More - Metallica rocked and prior to that - I was not a Metallica fan - I went on to see them 2 x more in the 90's and loved all three shows.
I may or may not see them at 'roo - but I a certain they will put on a good show -

Also to the metallica haters, I do not think you will see the boys only one time that weekend. I think they will be there the whole weekend, do a few sit ins, and possibly a solo acoustic set (hetfield and guests). I think they want to get respect from some of the biggest music critics out there from the bonnaroo crowd. I do think they will surprise some people in a good way.

ive seen tons of their recent live stuff and Lars is worse than ever, as is Kirk. James and Rob are decent but the other two arent fit enough to play in a professional band.

Compared to last years headliners... I think Metallica Pearl jam and Kanye are seriously a step up... I mean the police are good... but were in their prime like what the 1800's and not to hurt anyones feelings kings of leon and tool..... ewwww... I would rather see metallica then all of last years headliners.... Except the white stripes.... Seriously everyone should check the Lars interview on bonnaroo.com....
Whoa whoa whoa.... when did Kings of Leon and White Stripes headline?
I thought it was just Tool, The Police and Widespread Panic. Did I miss the first 2 of the 5 days or something?
I'm f'ing with you, KoL did not headline nor did the White Stripes so don't say they did.
I don't like any type of metal so I won't be at the show, plain and simple, carry on.

people trying to say that everyone is bitching about metallica b/c they've never heard them is rediculous...who hasn't heard a metallica song? if you've lived under a rock for twenty years and havent heard one of their tunes then you should check one out...but everybody else who has an opinion is probably educted on the band, for god's sake we are roo goers, which equals in the know about music! I think we all have an idea of what metallica is about and we don't like them.....it's not a matter of "give them a chance" or "you've just never heard them before".....c'mon already.
And Does anyone remember the posts from the radio clues where someone simulated what the crowd would look like at the metalli-puke show........i believe it was eight metallica fans, one nitrous kid, and 30, 000 people laughing and pointing at the sparce audience for the band.......i hope that happens.
I'm completely indifferent but I wanted to share this:
Neil and Peggy Young invited Metallica to play at their Bridge School Benefit last October... they were fantastic and everyone I talked to was impressed.

James's voice has really been sounding pretty good lately^. I'd love to see a 3 set monter from Metallica. Acoustic, Master of Puppets, then some more random sweetness and new songs.

whether they are good or bad is all completely subjective but can we all at least agree on the statement that Metallica is a somewhat strange choice for a headlining Roo act
Top five musical crimes perpetrated by Metallica in the 1990's and 2000's. Go. Sub-question: is it in fact unfair to criticize a formerly great artist for his latter day sins, is it better to burn out or fade away?
karma to you, justmeg, for enduring faith no more.
Angel Dust is one of my favorite albums of all time. I saw them in Houston right after it came out at a place called the Unicorn with Kyuss and Babes In Toyland. It was one of the best shows I have ever seen (and I've seen a whole bunch of shows). Of course, they weren't playing in a huge stadium, and not all music translates well into huge venues. I didn't see them on the Metallica/GNR/FNM tour but some friends did and said that FNM sucked. I saw them several times over the years after Angel Dust and they always put on a good show when I saw them, but they never seemed to bring it quite like that Angel Dust show. Anyways, if they ever reunited I'd go check it out, for sh*ts and grins.........
This word also has a underground meaning once you break it down. Let’s take “Bonn” for example and it actually turns into the word “Bone”. We all know gays use this word to describe the action of when they are fecal fisting their Cuban cabana boy at their sex bath house parties. Now let’s look at Roo, “Roo” is short for “Kangaroo”.So put the full true message together and you get“Bone a Kangaroo

please, please, please, will no one on this thread compare metallica to tool again? say what you want about their musical merits, but come on, while tool has metal influences, and that theme is present in their music, they fall into any and all of these categories:progressive, alternative, psychedelic, metal, (art rock?...i really only reserve that for the talking heads...but i dunno, tool puts on a pretty awesome visual display), often with multiple themes present throughout their songs and albums...while i am not your #1 metallica fan, i am familiar with a decent body of their work, and come on, its just not the same...tool is way more creative...end of story...

also...just my opinion, but...its better to burn out than to fade away...just look at some legendary or iconic musicians from our time (not to say they are the best, or whatever, just going on general reputation) with people like kurt cobain, jimi, jim morrison, etc, (there are plenty) dying young, it basically cemented their place in music history...who knows what could have happened...you could have a jim morrison that looks like (fat) elvis still touring today, whipping out his wrinkly old dick on stage...
