hey yall, im a fairly new poster here, but this will be my third bonnaroo, and i am looking forward to this one more than i ever have before. We have all seen the initial after shock of the lineup announcement, and it has been good and bad. However, the more i look into this lineup the more shows i am dying to see. To tell you the truth im am pretty happy about the headliners but even if you arent, the undercard is unbelievable. MMJ, Levon Helm, BB King (i beg everyone of you to go to this show), Bluegrass Allstars, Willie, Little Feat, Robert Randolph, yonder, Avett Brothers, T-bone Burnett, Robert Plant, Phil Lesh, and Derek Trucks. How many legends could you ask for? I know the top line of names may hurt some of yall, and its understandable. But i always thought hippies represented change? come on people, the times they are a-changin (i was bobby could have been there though, haha). Maybe its time to embrace this change and see what some other genres have to offer.

When I first looked at the lineup the minute it came out, I thought it sucked. There was only 11 bands I was really excited to see. There were a few more that I would probably see but they weren't anything I would get excited about. Well, a couple days later, there are 37 bands I want to see now. I have to admit, a lot of my favorite bands were at Bonnaroo last year. I think Bonnaroo will still be a great time, but for me, it probably won't top last year based on my tastes and who I like.

This is totally a personal take on the lineup, but having been to all Bonnaroos since 2004, I'm suffering from the repeating players. Very few artists am I interested in seeing live more than once, and so while there are many names on the lineup that I do love, I'm not excited about them because I've caught them at a previous 'roo. Part of me feels like that's a poor reason to not be excited. Does anyone suffer from Repeat Player Syndrome?

^^^ Yep, I do. This will be my 4th Roo as well. Most of the repeaters I've already seen, so it does take some excitement away. I had to miss Iron & Wine in '05, so it's cool that I'll get another opportunity. I have the most fun checking out those bands lower on the list. Every year there are a few of those who are a real surprise. Many of those play like it's the biggest show of their life.
I'm also suffering from Repeater syndrome. Not from 'Roo, but I've seen almost all the acts I really want to catch this year. Most of them were a couple years ago though, so I'm ready to see them again.

Kanye West didn't make me hate the lineup. Metallica was the only band I was disappointed in. Depending on the schedule I may catch part of Kanye, but there will most likely be a conflict for me ala lolla 06 i caught manu instead of kanye... amazing show! then i ended up catching manu last year at roo. love the man he rocks. Anyways, the headliners aren't everything. I'll end seeing Pearl Jam and Jack Johnson, so it'll be alright anyways!
well, you ask me why i'm drunk all the time it levels my head and eases my mind i just walk along and stroll and sing i see better days and i do better things
To me aside from Pearl Jam and the Dead related shit (including DSO) the real gems here are the handful of fabulous singer songwriters . Mason jennings, J. gonzalez, Iron and wine and Frankenreiter and Jack johnson. Imagine them all on stage on one day? Dreamy shroomy music for sure.
I put together a playlist from what I already had on my PC, and then went a little crazy downloading stuff and buying stuff...Right now I have 700+songs on my playlist and over 40 of the artists. The more I listen, the more excited I get and the more I realize I have to figure out a way to get to the farm in June.
To address the elephants in the room...Metallica is a (not-unpleasant) novelty to me, and I am legitimately excited about Kanye. I woudn't guarantee his show will be amazing, but I think it could be, and I'm excited to get the chance to see him.
But the rest of the line-up...so deep in so many ways. Classic rythm and blues music? Bonnaroo has never represented better than with Solomon Burke, B.B. King, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings.
Roots music? The bluegrass is first rate in quantity and quality. The All-stars lineup is like a best-of Bonnaroo bluegrass. Levon Helm is the very definition of American roots music.
If you are a Dead person (I'm not so much), there are two kinds of Phil and DSO.
World music is well represented with everything from Baobab to Grupo Fantasma to MIA.
The hip-hop is there although not directly to my tastes besides Kanye (the "biggest" hip-hop artist they've ever had).
I believe we've heard that the Jazz tent is returning. Electronic music will surely follow in the additions.
The first thing I thought when I saw High on Fire at Pitchfork festival in '06 was: They should have some metal at Roo. Metalica may indeed be a questionable decision due to their profile, but Mastodon and The Sword are great acts for Bonnaroo.
Pearl Jam and MMJ fill the "just plain old kick a$$ rock bands" quota, and I haven't even mentioned the acts like Battles and Sigor Ros, who will steal the show for many.
This all at a festival that Willie Nelson, B.B. King and Robert Plant will be performing at.
"Everybody needs somebody to love", originally by Solomon Burke and "Alive" by Pearl Jam are both songs that have meant a lot to me in my life. It's just ridiculous that I'll have the chance to hear them both on the farm this year.
There are plenty of good reasons why people can't go to expensive, far-off music festivals, but if you don't go to this festival because the lineup isn't good enough for you, or because you find an act or two distasteful.....your loss.

Theres a lot of stuff I want to see this year. I am amazed at the lineup the more I dig into it. I keep finding more bands I that I will want to go see. I hope they give Sigur Ros ad Gogol Bordello midnight sets, just not at the same time. A lot of people may bash Metallica, but I think they will rock Bonnaroo harder than its ever rocked. Normally I don't think I would want to pay to see Metallica at a metal fest, but having them on the lineup adds to the power of the festival. The fact they are one of the headliners gives them the oppurtunity to play longer than they would play anywhere else. This year has an incredibly diverse lineup here with a few legends of rock, and something for almost everyone. Besides that we still have 30 more bands... Keep Getting excited.
This is a VERY underrated lineup. At first, I wasn't sure what to make of it. Now, I'm extremely excited. So far, I've counted THIRTY EIGHT acts that I'd like to interview...

Dude! Great post!
Could you make a seperate post along these lines? I'de love to know how every artists fits in their general genre, so I could plan out my time better while I'm there :]
At first people's reactions seemed centered around Metallica and Kanye. Those two really appeared to keep people from realizing the real depth of this line-up. I could honestly skip the first line and have the best festival of the year arguably. Also, the more I discover the sound of the undercards and lesser known bands I become increasingly more antsy for June. I think this years worst issues arent necessarily the headliners but the unnavoidable conflicts of potential/hopeful late nighters (most late nights will probably resemble last years terrible Fri conflicts SCI vs. STS9 vs. Legendary Superjam or worse)

There are very few bands in this line-up, that I'm familiar with, I don't want to see. I haven't looked at it next to '06 and '07 yet, but I'm thinking it could be the best of the three.
Aside from Pearl Jam, you could wipe off the first line on the poster and I wouldn't care. After that it gets really good. There is incredible depth to this line-up and they haven't even started doing additions.
I really think a lot of people are underestimating this year. I feel like there were a few bands not on the initial lineup that everyone was expecting to see (Led Zep, Oasis, etc.) and it put everyone in a sour mood. But really, the lineup so far, to me, looks pretty facemelting.
