Hi all.. This has probably been rehashed but I'm just curious on opinions of these acts. Last year was my first bonnaroo but not my first 3 day festival.. Tool was the clincher for me but I still dug most all of the bands there. (Especially ween, god I love ween lol) I posted under the name xeus last year but I lost the p/w..
So considering tool was probably the biggest draw for me and considering how bummed out a lot of hippies were in the crowd last year. How do you all feel about metallica? I am an old metallica fan (pre-black they rocked my face off) but I gotta be in a mood for em.. I can't listen to them after digging on Marvin Gaye or John Lennon.. it's more of a ass-kicking mood (i'm a pacifist, so not literal ass-kicking) I just don't see how they'd mesh.. which brings me to the next band. Mastodon.. have you guys heard them? I am almost never in a mood for these guys.. they're heavy as fugg, the singer is a huge turn off for me. but musically the band is very gifted if your into that kind of soul crushing grindcore scene. how the hell are they gonna mesh? finally jim norton.. now I realize he's in the comedy tent most of you won't even see him but.. have you heard is comedy? most of it, is jim making fun of retarded children, gay people and minorities.. not to mention his affection for what he calls "yellow and brown treats"
It just seems like a clusterfugg.. personally I won't be going because I'm saving for a European crawl like I did in 03 (which was the greatest experience of my life)
opinions? flames? deletions due to this being covered already?
I'll skip mastodon for sure, I'll wind up seeing some of metallica or I'll take a nap. But Jim Norton is hilarious. I listen to him on Opie and Anthony, I wouldn't want to be his friend, he sounds like a dick and he's pretty stupid, but they guy is funny. Only problem is the comedians that were there last year I liked even more and never saw them either.....so it might not be in the cards for this year either.

I think its more of the idea of the unity of the people who enjoy different genres that they're trying to promote more than the idea of just the jam-band bonnaroo-faithful unity.
Think. Bonnaroo can prove as even more of a great epic, unifying event if bands like Metallica and Tool can play and people who enjoy those bands can get along with everyone else and everyone else can get along with them.

thanks for the karma mothersky.. salame!
jim is pretty funny (goddamn hilarious on louis CK's short lived HBO show) but most of the time he grosses me out.
i too love at least lewis black and david cross but wasn't willing to stand in one spot and let the sun literally beat on me while standing in line. wish there was another way they could do it.
i frequented the cinema tent for naps and to get out of the heat and got to see george plympton speak, which was very, very cool. i made a lot of bad decisions like driving through the night from Maryland and then busting open the beers on zero sleep and getting zooted as soon as we got there.. extremely stupid of me.. left me cracked out and sluggish the whole time. my brain and body just weren't ready for marathon of rock and heat and good times. OH WELL don't regret going at all.
I really don't understand having really heavy metal bands.. as a semi-metal head I know how boneheaded and angry some of the fans will be and i really, really hope they behave themselves. i wouldn't have made the decision.. i'm sure it'll still be a great time.
I just can't fathom seeing all those lighter jam bands and then hearing "DIE BY MY HAND, I SWEEP ACROSS THE LAND, KILLING FIRST BORN MAN" while "DIE! DIE! DIE! DIE!" is chanted in the background. ..I love that goddamn song..metallica's spin on a bible story, intriguing.. but like i posted above.. gotta be in the mood.. the devil horned hand isn't an all the time thing for me.. nam sayin!
The Mastodon bashing is killing me. Have you listened to Blood Mountain? They really branched out a lot on that album. They definitely don't play grindcore either (they sound nothing like Napalm Death!) They have a lot of roots in southern rock and you have to open your ears a bit to hear it.....but its there. Please guys...give this band a chance!!!!!

The frontman in my band is the pediatrician for the guitar player in Mastodon's child, so I had to check them out. While the "singing" can be annoying, the music behind it is pretty musically advanced. That's what Bonnaroo is about. Stellar musicianship. They'll fit in just fine.

Im sick of people being soo narrow minded towards heavier music. We got metallica, mastodon, and the sword. Neither of those three come anywhere near the "soul crushing grindcore scene."

Oh yeah. I'd also reckon to say that Brann Dailor, drummer from mastodon, is at least as impressive as the new Mars Volta drummer. Dave Grohl said that Brann is "the most amazing drummer ive ever seen"

Maybe so, but Pridgen plays balls to wall all the time during every song, they're basically just 7 minute drum solos for him with a band playing. IMO Pridgen is better though.
Mastodon is incredible!!! They are great live. The Sword is riff heaven! Metallica is always fun. These three bands are great representatives of the metal genre. Bonnaroo is supposed to be diverse. So bring on the diversity. Give these great bands a chance

I am probably only going to go to Bonnaroo to see Metallica, Pearl Jam, The Sword, B.B. King, and Phil Lesh. I really don't like bands like Jack Johnson and stuff, but I'll go if I can see Metallica. I am very open to music and will probably enjoy hearing many of the small name bands (well, you guys know who they are cuz you are Bonnaroo vets, but I'm a virgin ), but my major motivation is to unwind from school, hang out with my big group of friends that are going, and kick ass with Metallica, Mastodon, and The Sword. I've got to be quite honest: I am a rock/metal head at heart. I go to Ozzfest religiously, am looking forward to Rockstar Mayhem Tour (Slipknot and Disturbed headlining), I've seen bands like The Who, Rush, Def Leppard, Smashing Pumpkins, Aerosmith, etc. live countless times. So take what I say with a grain of salt.
I already said on another thread that I think the musicianship of Mastodon is amazing the vocals, meh. I'll give em a shot though if there are no conflicts.
As far as metal acts are concerned, damn am I loving listening to The Sword! I am far from a metal enthusiast, but I am totally digging the stuff on their myspace, time to dig deeper I reckon. Definitely a show I am going to try to make it to at Bonnaroo. Iron Swan by The Sword reminds me of Kill Em All era Metallica which I think is pretty damn great.
I wish there was some soul crushing grind there. That's music's final frontier, or at least Bonnaroo's. Maybe next year we'll have Genghis Tron, An Albatross, and Bodies in the Gears of the Apparatus.

One can hope.
Genghis Tron or Bodies would be amazing. I can't stand An Albatross though.
Cephalic Carnage for Bonnaroo 09!!!
but anyway, Jim Norton? Comedy about retarded children, gays and minorities? ...Sounds like something I dont want to miss.

The grindcore thing is still making me laugh. If you want grindcore, check out some Destroyer Destroyer, All Shall Perish, or Job For A Cowboy! Last time I listened to Mastodon, I didn't hear any pig squeals, death growls, or chopped/doubled time patterns on percussion. This band consists of 4 beer drinking good ol' boys from Atlanta who like to have a good time just like us. Their older albums were a lot harder and full of screaming...yes. The new album has a much different sound to it. Also, there is more than 1 vocalist. Troy and Brent both take care of vocal duties and do a great job IMO. It was a bit brash in the past but like I said...the sound has changed a lot. I honestly think that the majority of the Bonnaroo crowd has a much better chance of enjoying the Mastodon set than Metallica! Clutch and Tool went over pretty damn well last year, why can't Mastodon? Finally, if you're not going....why even comment on the lineup?
I could honestly see Genghis Tron playing one of the cafe stages. I think it would be neat, they would have a great time, and it's not like it would be expensive to book them, haha.
And then Bonnaroo would be just about as musically diverse as it could possibly be.
Also I'd like to see Lightning Bolt. God do I love Lightning Bolt.
