How many people like these bands purely for nostalgic reasons? Count me as a yes for both of 'em. I relate to them in my adolescent mindset, but my musical tastes have blossomed since then and I've moved on. That fact alone will take something vital away from seeing either/both of them for me. Who agrees/disagrees? I can just imagine people waiting through new songs for Even Flow and Master of Puppets.
Sure there are some good cutting edge bands in the lineup, but I found out last year how bland the festival is when the headliners are and have been on autopilot for quite some time. Your whole day builds up to a solid shock of anticlimax. Still stoked about: MMJ, Death Cab, Sigur Ros, Ben Folds, Broken Social Scene, The Avetts, and Battles.

Pearl Jam is definitely still rockin. Definitely a lot of good music coming out of them. Metallica may have peaked in the 80s, but I'm not sure Bonnaroo could have handled them then anyways. Anyhow, I'll probably be seeing both of them.
For the record, not a PJ or Metallica fan in particular. But I'm definitely not a hater. And to point out the obvious, Zeppelin's music is even more adolescent in appeal, and they peaked 35 years ago. I don't think people would be bitching about them playing Roo...

You can't really be of headliner status if you haven't been huge forever. What is one band that started in the 2000's that could headline bonnaroo, i don't think i can think of one.
Pearl Jam is one of the only true Rock bands out there still, they are still making great music, and I believe are a perfect fit for Bonnaroo, I been wanting pearl jam there since 2003. I cant wait till they surprise all the people that just know them from their first couple albums, cause you guys are in for a treat, Trust Me
As for metallica, I just dont think its a good fit, plus I dont like their attitudes, they think they are the shit, and they arent!...Lets hope they play all the old songs cause anything after the black album is garbage!
As for Kayne, lets just say I wish it was Snoop Dogg instead!

The only one I can think of is Coldplay
And people would have just as many complaints about them. This year i thought it became pretty clear the pool of headliner worthy artists is small. I'd love to see Prince added though, i'm kinda surprised bonnaroo hasn't gotten him yet.
So when did Tom Petty Peak? How about The Police...when did they peak? I take it Widespread peaked just recently.
Record sales wise, I don't know when he peaked. But he had 3 big hits in the mid 90s 20 years into his career (Mary Jane's Last Dance, You Wreck Me, You Don't Know How It Feels). I would honestly say Wildflowers is his best work, and thats a 1994 album.
Pearl Jam? Kept a loyal following, but it's the early stuff radio relies on
Metallica? St. Anger was a step backwards, and they take some long breaks in between. Sales wise they peaked with Black Album, but Load/ReLoad had a few hits of their own. Most headbangers will point to the pre-Black material as their peak as far as quality.
Peak is a subjective term because it's not clear if you mean quality of work or record sales.

Exactly, or it could also mean popularity, and i don't think these bands have really come down from their peaks in that sense, they're are still hugely popular, and thats why they headline bonnaroo.
PJ came out with an album about a year ago that did quite well, had a freash sound and had a few hits from it. Saw them a year ago - got tickets right when available but still got nosebleed because there were so many fans. Even with nosebleed I was floored by the performance.
Have live DVDs of theirs from the past couple of years and they have NOT lost it. Those guys perform, they don't go into the motions. The funniest thing about Eddie is how he'll start with like 3 tee shirts, a polo and another shirt on and slowly peel away the layers because he sweats and gets so worked up.
PJ will NOT be like Sting last year. They are current, they are a hard working band and they are still evolving.

Radio stations all stick with the hits from artists like Pearl Jam. They really only play something different when a new album comes out, then it's back to the first three albums after that.
Pearl Jam has a lot better stuff than what is played on the radio. I expect we will get a great performance from them on the farm. I just hope it is less full of radio songs like Lolla was.
Pearl Jam may have peaked record sales wise, but certainly not in terms of creativity or the ability to consistently perform great shows.

I happen to think Pearl Jam still makes fantastic music - their last few albums have been pretty great, and they wrote a TON of great material during the 90's. Plus they bring it live.
Metallica, I don't know about. I saw them live about 10 years ago, and it was great, but I don't know any of their newer stuff. Do they have newer stuff?
That said...you can't bash on these two while ignoring bands like the Allman Brothers and Phil Lesh, who not only peaked 20+ years ago, but stopped making new music altogether! That to me is worse than a band who still puts out some kind of new content.
I think last year did have pretty bland headliners - I didn't watch any of them. This year, I wouldn't call Pearl Jam or Metallica bland.
allmans peaked in 71, but still put out new music. Not sure where you get that idea from. Hittin The Note is a great album and they still play songs from it, plus the albums they put out in ythe 90s.
radiohead is just the best headliner ever. sure they were around in the 90's, but they've been peaking for 10 years now. i wasn't saying that a good headliner had to be a band that's started since 2000, what i was saying was that the strongest music imo from both of these bands is rather juvenile and dated.

Fuck yeah! Pearl jam will play a stellar show and will fit in perfectly. Metallica I'm not sure what to expect. They have been working with Rick Rubin for the past year and he tends to bring out the best in musicians so who knows what they're going to sound like. Maybe they'll suprise us and come out with a tight performance. Outdated? yeah right.
