i can't believe no one has brought up the blackalicious/common/lyrics born set from 06
THAT was a great hip hop show
Agreed. That was the best hip hop show i've ever seen. But I am excited to see Kanye, Lupe, and Talib. The only act that could make this better, imo, would be Outkast. I would flip out if they get added.
There was a show where supposedly someone came out and performed a really short set, and supposedly looked 40 lbs lighter than Doom. I think Doom said he was "trying something new out" I couldn't find the article but it was awhile back. I did a really poor job of explaining it. Sorry..
The controversy came to light after a disastrous August 15th performance at San Francisco's live music venue the Independent that featured a noticeably skinnier and particularly furtive Doom rapping for twenty minutes – into a dead mic.

Fans took to the message boards, only to find that similar scenes had played out days earlier at the El Rey Theatre in LA, and, before that, the July 29th Rock the Bells show in NY. Though the performer at both shows physically matched Doom, witnesses claim he lip-synced. And as music outlets began circulating different accounts, increasingly strange details emerged: no audience interaction, unusually stringent bans on photographs and video recordings, a backstage on total lockdown.
The plot thickens: Two weeks later and Doom and his alleged impostor have gone MIA. He canceled the second Independent performance citing medical reasons, withdrew from an August 17th set in Seattle, skipped out on the San Francisco date of massive hip hop festival Rock the Bells, and called off an August 19th appearance in San Diego.
this is a little bit off topic but ghostland observatory is also a fun band to dance to. i think they will get a late night slot. im really happy that they added some nice hip hop acts. its not my thing....but i think its WAY cool for those of you who are into it! that will be so fun late night!!!
The whole aesop/el-p/shadow lineup last year was fucking great. i hated that i had to miss the superjam but i had to see aesop and el-p. The roots show was amazing last year too. i missed some good acts to see that show as well.

I feel like Lyrics Born is a strong possibility with a new album coming in April.
My biggest wish would be for Aesop Rock, but I doubt he would be there back to back (he's my fave and last year was the first Bonnaroo I missed ).
More realistic possibilities I'd like to see: The Coup Busdriver Rhymefest PE would be awesome Arrested Development or Speech would be fun enough for the nostalgia
For the record, I'm psyched about Kanye. Saw Lupe once (before his first album dropped) and he was mellow but ok (Rhymefest stole the show that day @ Pitchfork '06). I've never really been able to "get" Talib Kweli. He has always seemed kind of bland to me. I can get into "mainstream" or "underground" rap/hip-hop, but he seems to exemplify the worst of both to me (repetitive and self-righteous). Don't really mean to sound so negative, I've just tried to get into him repeatedly and don't get it. I think I have most of his stuff, what are the people who dig him's favorite tracks?
Here's hoping they don't put the late night hip-hop up against the most irresistable shows of the fest again...

That was a good three acts for that late night, but Common came out late and didn't even get through his whole set, I was pretty angry about that, especially after I found out MMJ was laying down an awesome set while I waited for an hour for Common to make his way onstage.
As for this year, I just can't endorse the Kanye/Lupe duo. I'm a big fan of hip hop, but I guess I'm "old school" in that I my fav two albums are "Illmatic" and "Ready to Die," and I'm a huge fan of Gang Starr, Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul. Outkast was the last great hip hop group, and my fav few current hip hop acts are Ghostface, Murs, Clipse and The Roots.
Kanye/Lupe are bubblegum hip hop, glossy suburban soccer mom music that people who don't really follow hip hop assume, because they're at the top of the charts, that they are guiding lights of the genre (yes, I've heard they're albums). Sorry to post such hate on this board but I just can't stand these two.
Talib is very good and I'm happy he's there, along with MIA, who suprised me with her killer lyrics. I would love if they could add Gza, and any combination of Wu Tang alums to the lineup someday.
The hip hop lineup is far beyond amazing. Three of the greatest...The Beautiful Struggle (Kweli) and The College Droupout (Kanye) are two of my top three hip hop albums of all time...
Maybe a Common addition?? That would make it perfect

Nothing can touch the lineup last year. At least this year can't. I have never been a fan of Kanye. He should stick to producing in my opinion. I haven't heard a ton of Lupe's stuff but what I have sounds pretty decent. And Talib is Talib...I can't quacking wait to see him.
There are so many acts I would love to see added. Most of all I would probably like Mr. Lif, Madlib or The Pharcyde for a good throwback. And although I've seen Del a good three times now, he always puts on a great show and I'd love to see him at roo.

This video is from the Halloween show at House of Blues I went to here in Chicago. Lupe and his LIVE BAND jammed out for eight minutes on this song...gonna be great to see it again.

I am sorry, it is going to be hard to top the Galactic Hip Hop Extravaganza from last year. That my friends was a party to be at (unless you like Gov't Mule and Sasha), but I am happy to be hit with a new best hip hop experience performance in the future (we all have goals I just think it will be hard to top Galactic's last year).
Personally I want Aesop Rock and El-P back because there was no way I was missing Superjam and I really wanted to see Aesop. "One by one like confused little penguins."
"That's the big thing about education. People can be book smart, but not really intelligent about anything else. A lot of times they just taking in all this information and regurgitate it. It's much more important to process it and personalize it. To apply it to your world, to your life. You have to walk the walk, or you can't really report about it honestly."

^^^Aesop/El-P show was ammmmaaazing, El-P came out on stage with that slow version of "Mad World" from Donnie Darko. It was actually quite gripping, if I do say so myself. I def. want both of them back. Mr. Dibbs was great too.
I've heard great things about Lupe Fiasco, I really like Talib Kweli, and really don't like Kanye. I'd say it's a pretty good line up of rap, though... some relatively big names that are all highly respected.
