So I came up with this extensive list for possible Bonnaroo artists, from headliners all the way to the smaller bands at the Troo Music Lounge and Blue Room Cafe and even some comedians. I know there are many lists and polls all over this message board, but I just wanted to start a new thread, for people to see what I have, and please feel free to add artists or comment or make suggestions or whatever.
Ryan Adams Arcade Fire Allman Brothers Band Trey Anastasio Arctic Monkeys ALO Beastie Boys David Bowie Black Crowes with or without Jimmy Page Black Sabbath Belle and Sebastian Devendra Banhart Band Blue Man Group Frank Black or the Pixies Blues Traveler Bump Burning Spear Citizen Cope Eric Clapton or Cream Counting Crows Frank Caliendo - comedy Carbon Leaf CSNY or Neil Young with Crazy Horse Dane Cook - comedy George Clinton and P-Funk Cake The Clientele JJ Cale Robert Cray Band Nick Cave and Grinderman Ry Cooder Coldplay - working on a new album with a Latin feel Bob Dylan The Doves Ani DiFranco The Duhks The Ditty Bops Danger Mouse Disco Biscuits Eagles The Eels Foo Fighters John Frusciante John Fogerty or CCR Femi Kuti David Gray Jim Gaffigan - comedy Guster Ghostface Killah Ghostland Observatory Genesis Green Day - Billy Joe is writing their new album on the piano Ben Harper Bruce Hornsby Corey Harris Emmylou Harris Heartless Bastards Hot Buttered Rum Iron and Wine Interpol Jack Johnson - his new album comes out in Feb 08 and is being written with an electric and darker sound Norah Jones Alison Krauss - would be cool to see her guest with Robert Plant or something Ben Kweller LCD Soundsystem Los Lobos Ray Lamontagne Dave Matthew Band, hopefully with Tim Reynolds My Morning Jacket John Mayer Modest Mouse Stephen Marley - the only Marley that hasn't been before, probably the best out of the 3 - Damian, Ziggy John Mellencamp Jesse Malin Maroon 5 Willie Nelson Nine Inch Nails New Riders of the Purple Sage Oasis Ozomatli OAR Pearl Jam RATM - headlining Vegoose, don't think Bonnaroo will happen this year Robert Plant - just cause I don't think Led Zeppelin will happen Polyphonic Spree Peter, Bjorn and John Phish - probably won't happen, too early for a reunion, not sure they would reunite at Bonnaroo Glen Philips or Toad the Wet Sprocket Perpetual Groove Primus Queens of the Stone Age Radiohead REM RHCP Robert Randolph The Shins Martin Sexton Paul Simon Bruce Springsteen Santana Soulive Sister Hazel Derek Trucks Band Susan Tedeschi Travis U2 Umphrey's McGee Tom Waits The Who Loudon Wainwright III Hank Williams III Rufus Wainwright The Wallflowers Wu-Tang Clan Lucinda Williams Peggy Young - Neil's wife Yes Yonder Mountain String Band Zox
Well, just glancing through the list, I'd say you can eliminate arena groups like U2, Green Day or RHCP (wrong format), or groups like Phish, Cream or CCR (not reuniting anytime soon) or nostalgia acts like Genesis, The Who or The Eagles (again, wrong format). You can also probably eliminate guys like Paul Simon, Santana or Bruce Springsteen because they have no previous connection with Superfly or a guy like Tom Waits because he tends to only play indoor theatre venues or special fundraising events. Black Sabbath pretty much has their own festival when they play, so nix them. And groups like Counting Crows, Toad the Wet Sprocket, The Wallflowers and Sister Hazel could play Bonnaroo, but let's be honest, they're not relevant right now in any way, shape or form and lack the rabid following of a group like Blues Traveler, so I doubt they'd be there.
Beyond that good list.
Here are a few more: Battles (or Giantess now from what I gather) Bright Eyes The Cure (don't laugh, they'll be in the south at the exact time Bonnaroo is happening) The Dead or Phil Lesh & Friends Steve Earle Explosions in the Sky Ben Folds Grizzly Bear Justice Led Zeppelin (IF they reunite for a tour, they WILL play Roo) Lupe Fiasco Muse Any solo artist who used to be in Pink Floyd Portishead The Raconteurs (I'd almost guarantee they'll be at Bonnaroo next year with the new album and the fact they're from TN to begin with) Son Volt (you can pretty much pencil in Jay Farrar or Son Volt following a year Wilco's played the festival and vice versa) Sonny Rollins Sly & The Family Stone (IF they reunite) TV on the Radio
Not feeling like stretching my brain any further. That said, I'm not sure it's not just pointless to speculate until December anyway. For instance, it's great to speculate about Daft Punk or RATM being at Bonnaroo next year, but there's a good chance both bands could be in the studio next summer. Whereas a group like Radiohead, who seems a long shot because they played in 2006, will likely be touring in support of their new album next year. And a guy like Stevie Wonder whose a total non-factor in speculation right now, could decide to roll out a full blown tour next year and use Bonnaroo as ground zero for publicity.

I listed the Counting Crows because I heard they had one of the best sets at Farm Aid this year, and I'm sure the people of Bonnaroo probably know about it. Paul Simon and Bruce Springsteen both played Jazz Fest, was it this past year or the year before?, which I thought SuperFly had some connection with. My listing of Phish, Cream and CCR is just stupid, and it seems more likely that Trey, Eric Clapton and John Fogerty would have the better chance, Trey being a Bonnaroo vet, Clapton having several friends and connections to Bonnaroo including Derek Trucks, John Mayer and Buddy Guy among others I'm sure, and Fogerty, well, I'm not really a fan, but it could be possible. Jakob Dylan of the Wallflowers may not be relevant but does have the connection in that his dad played. I listed bands like Green Day and the Eagles because they are working on new albums, even though that doesn't mean anything, I think the crowd and generation Bonnaroo caters to would certainly be fans of Green Day, however I would not want them there, anyways, Lolla, Coachella or Warped Tour seems more likely for Green Day, and the Eagles are a great classic southern rock band that I'm sure many people including myself grew up on, and they certainly have enough great songs to headline and I think they would be a good add for Bonnaroo, but I think them playing would be similar to the Police, and I know Bonnaroo can and will do better than that. And finally, Led Zeppelin at Bonnaroo, I just don't think there's a chance in hell at that happening. Sure we had John Paul Jones this past year, but if Zeppelin was at Bonnaroo, it would sell out in a couple hours or less, however, Zeppelin at Roo would be the greatest thing to ever happen to Bonnaroo.

I was on String Cheese's website, cause I miss them, and thought this would be pretty cool to have at Bonnaroo next year:
it's a project called 3 Foot Icon which includes Kyle Hollingsworth of SCI, Speech from Arrested Development, and Chief Xcel from Blackalicious, it's news to me, I haven't heard their music but it is apparently jazz, funk and hip-hop and it sounds good for a latenight Bonnaroo set

so, has anyone else heard of this or their music?
I haven't heard the music, but that definitely sounds like something Superfly would jump on!

I heard next year marks some sort of anniversary or something for Blues Traveler, maybe their 15th? not too sure about it, so don't quote me on it, ALO seems to have gotten much bigger since they last played, i think in 2005? again i'm not exactly sure, i would like to see Page play, but man, Phish reuniting at Bonnaroo would be just fucking awesome, I don't see why some people are against it, i know they could have there own festival, i think when Phish reunites, if it happens, they should definitely close Bonnaroo on Sunday night, oh.....how about this, lets say Phish reunites in 2009 or 2010 or whenever, they could close Bonnaroo on Sunday and maybe have their own show also on Monday maybe Tuesday or even Wednesday, or just simply a reunion at the Bonnaroo farm would kick ass....
I think ALO is a lock. And where ALO goes, Bret Dennen is likely to go too right now (1/2 of Bret's backing band is in ALO). And Jack's due for a return, which would be easier with ALO there (Zach being a shared member)
While toad the wet sprocket won't play, their lead singer glen phillips certainly could and is INCREDIBLY relevant to the Roo scene (having recorded an album with Nickle Creek and become an acclaimed solo indie act).
I agree about Wallflowers fundamentally, but we have to be careful since 1/2 of Wallflowers already played Roo. (Ever met Ben Harper's guitarist and songwriter pal?)
Grizzly Bear, Beruit and Jennifer O'Connor. Maybe Hotel Lights. The Frames or at least Glen/Marg.
I always think Pearl Jam could, and I think after Lolla this year they are a high possibility. Maybe a Radiohead return?
Cure? Meh. I say meh even though I'm a huge fan-- I'd be pleasantly surprised, but surprised still. A better chance is the Trent Reznor solo piano show he's been rumored to plan as a late night act.
Pucifer. And I'm only 1/2 kidding.
3 Foot Icon is a good lead. Lots of spin off acts too (Speech's solo, etc).
Carbon Leaf.
Pitty Sing. modwheelmood.
ATO: Patti Griffin. David Gray. Whigs on a bigger stage.
Won't ever happen.... People would complain about it being too "dark" for Bonnaroo, since they can't say it'd be too wild. It's just so good of an idea, it'll never happen.

yeah, but a lot of people were saying tool would be too dark or not good for the scene or bring the wrong crowd in, which included me saying that at first but i realized my mistake in saying that, as long as its a great live show it qualifies, i could definitely see it happening first for a place like coachella before bonnaroo

bonnaroo needs and gets icons of certain types of music for all generations, it did start mostly in the jamband scene but the changes of diversity have definitely helped bonnaroo overall in the end, while there are some other bands i would rather see before trent or NIN at bonnaroo, you gotta admit that trent reznor is an important music icon, i mean c'mon johnny cash covered NIN, in the end however, i don't think he'll be there, would probably fit better at vegoose

i agree they do need to please all ages.. they have done that very well the last few years along with having acts from all genres of music.. although i think 08' could use some George Thorogood on Thursday night. That would be awesome.
I'm going to throw this out there just because I havnt heard his name...Bob Seger...I dont know if he is even touring, but people are mentioning Springsteen and I like Seger so much more

i heard bob seger had a good tour in 2006, staying with the classic rock theme, other classic rockers who have toured the past few years are tom petty(stopped touring-i think, and already played bonnaroo), CSNY(neil has played), bob dylan(already played), the boss will be touring, the eagles are workiing on a cd, allman brothers have been going strong for awhile, yes will be celebrating their 40th, the who have toured, roger waters tour last year was the best show i've ever seen, led zeppelin's getting back together for at least 1 show, van morrison headlined ACL in 06, paul simon and the boss were at jazz fest-i think in 06, skynyrd's still around but its not really skynyrd, zz top might still be out there, steve miller played at riverbend fest last year, cat stevens or yusuf islam or islam yusuf made a great cd last year, gordon lightfoot still tours, ozzy still plays, elton john and billy joel still tour, not sure about bowie, thats all i got for now...
