last time i just watched whole sets. and for the most part that is what i am doing this time. but i plan to at least move around a little more this time.

Depends on the show. Even if I love a band, if they're not playing to my expectations I'm gonna go somewhere else. The way I look at it, no matter where I am, I'm gonna be having a good time so it's whatever you feel like doing at the time.
Most of the time I prefer whole sets, much the same way as I prefer albums over individual songs. However, if someone is not wowing me and there is another band on that I would want to check out, I won't hesitate to jump, trying to find the best situation.

My friends have already warned me that they're going to peruse the menu and see parts of different sets most of the time. I'm not down with that. I enjoy seeing a performance from beginning to end. I enjoy the temporary bond that is created between the performers and the audience. The shared experience is a thrill. You don't get that when you concert hop. It's like a bunch of disjointed mush and not very memorable.

I agree with this and it is my plan, but sometimes, if there's a bad vibe, etc., you have to get your move on and find something else - not often, I hope, but sometimes.
I like to jump around when there are bands i wanna see overlapping each other. It's really easy to move between the tents and the small stage. There are also a few sets that I will definitely watch from start to finish (SCI, The Slip, Ratdog, White Stripes). The key is to do what YOU want. Don't let your friends hold you back, hahaha. You can meet up with them later.
I intend on watching all of Tool, The Flaming Lips, Damien Rice, Tortoise and The Nightwatchman. Aside from those, I will be doing a lot of jumping around.

I agree about the feeling it part. But, you also have to factor in how easily it is going to be for you to see the bands play. Like if you are debating between Tea Leaf Green or Rodrigo y Gabriela, you might want to go with rob/gab because you are more likely to be able to see TLG (depending on where you are from, this is just an example)
My more personal perplexing question is this; I know I am going to split some partially offsetting sets: Roots/Manu Chao, End of Superjam/Shadow, Spoon/Franz. But when do you bail. I know that if you are having a good time at the band that you are watching, you should probably stay put, but sometimes the other band might be going off just as hard and might be more difficult to see in the future.
My biggest problem with this is going to be the Roots and Manu Chao, because I am probably more familiar with the Roots and I know that they play great encores, but how many times are you going to be able to see Manu Chao, and I think that we are going to get a healthy dose of Black Thought along with ?uestlove at the superjam. Whatever, things could be worse.

okay, so i jumped around quite a bit this year each day, and by sunday i was almost dead, i couldnt wait to leave but now i just want to go back cause i miss it anyways, in the future i may see more full sets, i went over the schedule and i kept track of all the bands that i saw, whether it was a couple songs or half their set or their full show, in all i saw 42 bands, that doesnt count kyle hollingsworth at the sonic stage as a seperate band, i'm just combining kyle's set and string cheese's and counting it as one artist, got it, good, out of those 42, there are 14 artists/bands/timeslots where i saw at least half their show, the full complete shows i saw were rodrigo y gabriela, little ones at sonic stage, kyle h at sonic stage, the slip-both shows, john butler trio, and wilco, i know none of the very big names are on here even though i'm a fan of most all bands that played, but i want you to know about my regrets, here is a list: 1. I left String Cheese Incident to catch a couple songs at SuperJam, but when I got there I wasn't sure what they were playing, I'm not even sure who was singing, it wasnt Ben, ?uestlove, or JPJ and it was too packed, I couldn't see anything, not to mention it was at the smallest sized tent out of the this,that, and other, and I will never see SCI again, until a reunion 2. Okay, the headliners - IMO Tool wasn't as good as everyone was saying they would be, also the vibe didn't really feel right, putting on the cd does pretty much the same thing their show did for me, i was back pretty far, and the light show didn't blow me away or anything. The Police I thought were better than Tool, but still the vibe wasn't right, but I'm happy to say that I've seen the Police, I've seen Widespread several times, so I didn't stick around too long, as I was dead tired 3. Was I the only one who missed the spaceship landing at the Flaming Lips? 4. I wish I didn't leave Ben Harper halfway through to see Keller, cause I missed JPJ but made it back for the last couple songs 5. I wish I didnt check out Warren's acoustic set, I mean his interview, that I couldnt hear from not very far back 6. I wish I wouldve gone on the ferris wheel
and finally I hope that the next time I go to Bonnaroo I stick around for full sets of the bands I really love, and not feel like I have to check out all the other good bands, I hope I pace myself during the day, so I can see full headliner and late night shows, and I hope I don't drop acid again
My girl and I were music junkies, running all around to see as much as we could. Camping in VIP really helped us see a ton of music.
Our final tally was 51+ bands, 7+ comics, and 5+ djs. (I counted flight of the conchords as one, sasha and digweed as one, fyi. That's where the pluses come in. I also didn't count the guy I saw out in Shakedown jamming Hendrix style on the guitar-hero guitar through a synthesizer :-)
Take out the bands i saw less than 10 minutes of, and it's probably 40+ bands. Almost everything we liked we saw at least 20-40 minutes of.
I wrote up our experiences in two threads, My Roo Review Part One and Two. I got flamed pretty good by folks who thought I dismissed their favorite bands. Sorry, just my opinion, I had an incredible weekend start to finish.
Also, someone wrote if i saw 50 bands, i wasn't really there. Huh? On Saturday, for example, I was out in Centeroo from Noon til 5:45 the next morning, with only about an hour total nap before and after the Police in between. That's almost 18 hours straight of running around seeing music, how was I not really there?

There was definitely so much going on I was running around all over the place. Some of the regrets came from sticking with my friends when they wanted to leave. I would have watched more of Galactic although it was getting cold and my friends wanted to crash out, noone wanted to ride the ferris wheel and spark up, my friends wanted to go see Ziggy Marley when Gogol was still on so we left early. Afew other ones, I should have stayed to watch the entire Ben Harper set instead of walking around going to see Keller Williams (who would be better solo). and it really sucked how crowded the Which stage was with the flaming lips and the white stripes. Those should both be on the main stage. I caught Girl Talk and that was awesome, but made it impossible to get close for the Lips (and they werent playng anything good when we walked bye so went to Galactic which rocked). I will say that going to sleep listening to DJ Shadow and Galactic close out their sets 2 nights in a row was awesome. Best stuff to go to sleep to ever.

i was set hopping this year big time, because sometimes even though a particular artist might be good, there are others that are good too especially if there is artists playing at different stages that I have love for, and have never seen any of them. I just wish I could be at more than one place at a time, Im just glad I have found downloads for almost every show I was interested in plus some that I didnt plan on seeing, and didnt see, but for some I stay all the way through from start to finish, but I usually start to leave during the last song to beat the crowds, and maybe catch part of another show that catches my ear.

Alright, sorry that I am quoting myself, but I definitely made some mistakes this year. I ended up splitting Spoon to Ween to Franz. This was a bad decision, because I was loving the Spoon set, but since I have never seen Ween, ended up going to Ween when Spoon probably had about 30 to 45 minutes left to go. That was a mistake. Although the Ween show was interesting, I am more of a Spoon fan and I thought that they were really taking their live show to another level from the previous time that I saw them. So I wish I had not split that set, and just went from Spoon straight to Franz and cut out the middle man.
Another mistake on splitting sets was leaving the Superjam early, thinking that I could make a round and see El-P and Soundtribe and then get back to the Superjam encore. Who would have known that they only played 90 minutes. At least I saw about 60 minutes of the Superjam, which was great (once we moved to a spot where you could actually hear them and not the disco arcade banging techno non-sense - that was the worst Techno I have heard in a long time). But the Superjam going short screwed us a little, because we left our friends at STS9 early to find out that no one was playing at the Superjam. Of course we went back to STS9 and caught most of the rest of the show, but without our friends, who went to Shadow since they had scene STS9 for a couple hours already. It was a slight bummer.
I will also say that I gave out some bad advice as well, because I said you should probably go see Manu Chao instead of the Roots, because you probably will have a better chance to see the Roots than Manu. Well, this is what I did, and I walked past as the Roots were rocking it to get ready for Manu. Although, Manu was decent, it sounded like he just went back to the same jam for each song and it really started getting repetitive. I wish I had cut bait, and left for the Roots, but I never took the leap and I regret that.
Now I have to say I did make one good decision on the fly, which was leaving Brazilian Girls early and enjoying most of Tortoise's set. The original plan was to split both sets but everytime that a Brazilian Girl song would finish and there was dead air, I could hear Tortoise rocking it behind me, so we cut bait on Brazilian Girls and enjoyed the last 45 minutes or so of Tortoise's set, which was definitely in my top two sets of the roo.
Sorry for my long winded answer, but I definitely learned something this year with the splitting of sets. Don't leave if you are having a good time, and if you are not having a good time even though you thought you should be having a good time, don't be scared to leave because there is something else going on that you will probably like. Well now I know, and knowing is half the battle.

Karma for the good advice. I made a couple of bad decisions like that too (even though I said I wouldn't). For the most part, I was a good little boy and stuck it out. But there was just so much to watch. I was like a kid in a candy store.

Every year I pledge to see fewer acts for longer to cut down on the postRoo blurrrrr effect on my memory. But every year there is just so much I wanna see !
Last year I caught 36 musical acts. This year was 29. I guess I am getting there...

I like that. It's exactly what I have. My resolution for next year is to just pick a few choice bands to make it a point to see. Then, I'll spend more time just relaxing and observing...letting the cards fall as they may.
