I am trying to figure how this will work out. Will Ben play acoustic? I am not all that familiar with Ben, but does he play electric live at all? I am just hoping for a rocking/blusey set.

Oh, and another thing... I have a concert where Ben Harper did a cover of Whole Lotta Love. I'm expecting this. (He played electric guitar during this concert too, to answer your original question as to whether he plays electric)

Really? this is great news.! gets my expectations up
Yeah when he brings out that lap guitar!! He is just so amazing! I just really can't believe this superjam. I will also be waiting on maynard and danny carey to join the jam. !

It just hit me...
all this previous hype about Robert Randolph shouting "see you at Roo!" at his shows (which he has, I heard it in charlottesville in march) but not being in the lineup, obvioiusly means a planned surprise appearance. Now, he's either coming out on stage during a Medeski and Martin show with the rest of The Word...
OR
dueling lap steel guitars with Harper, while JPJ and ?uestlove gettin funky in the background.
Ben will play electric, and I am hoping for Jack White and Dan Auerbach coming out for a Blues Explosion Jam!!!
COMMINYYYEEEEAAAAAHHHHAAAAA!!!
Probably no Jack White as the White Stripes are playing the O2 Wireless Festival in Leeds, UK on the 15th. But, I was hoping for this as well. First person I thought of to join the jam.
Isn't it possible there are no guests, and just the 3 of them? I am trying so hard to figure out the musical direction this thing may go. It wouldn't be all acoustic, would it?

there will be guests (the announcement said so, in essence). and no, it won't be acoustic... it'll be a f*cking super JAM !!!! yeeaaahhhhh! ;D
I mentioned it earlier, but JPJ produced Uncle Earl's album and he has been playing a lot of bluegrass on the acoustic bass. He says this on his website.

I realize JPJ can play acoustic and enjoys playing acoustic but I really don't see them doing that for the superjam. I think Harper will be on a lap steel guitar or electric guitar, JPJ on his bass, or as sangreal said quite possibly a mandolin on a few songs.
The announcement seemed to revolve around the blues aspect of these artists, not so much the bluegrass.

It's the effing superjam. Ben will get all his accoustic in on saturday. JPJ will switch between bass and keys, but who knows who might show up, JPJ can play a lot of instruments. I say very little acoustic if any, it's midnight and it's the superjam. They're just gonna jam and you'll never see this again in your life. 3 Zeppelin songs TOPS, maybe. I will guess, "What is and What should never be." "Trampled Underfoot." and "whole lotta love." Am I actually saying this? This is going to be awesome!
"Disobedience, in the eyes of anyone who has read history, is man's original virtue. It is through disobedience and rebellion that progress has been made." Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900), The Soul of Man Under Socialism
"You're either on the bus or off the bus." Ken Kesey
"When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." Hunter S. Thompson
Ben Harper plays live electric all the time. He did it on the Letterman show playing "Better Way." I think that trio will bust out "Dazed and Confused."

if they don't play any other zep songs, there will be definitely be a 20 minute version of whole lotta love.
