ok i just got back from the TOOL show and heres the low down.
to start things off i just want to put out there that i am a HUGE TOOL fan and have been following them for years. i couldnt catch them in 01 here in atlanta so this has been a long time coming.
the opening band was melt banana, an asian metal band who quite frankly got really old really fast. they were super loud and their music lacked coherance. the loudness however was a sign of what was to come.
TOOL came on about 9:30ish. doors opened at 7, melt banana started at 8. i went with some friends and our seats were on the floor! AHH!
ok so heres the setlist, it was the same as that of the jacksonville setlist, which was on the 31st i believe.
jambi stinkfist (with extended jam(AMAZING)) 46&2 Schism lost keys> rosetta stoned pushit wings pt. 1> wings pt. 2 Lateralus (extended drum solo jam with guest drummer from mastadon on toms) vicarious
the band was on point the entire show. dannys time was perfect, justin was owning the bass, and adam explored more in his leads. they were tight as hell. maynard didnt miss a note. they were really feeling it strong, you could tell. maynard didnt talk very much at all between songs, the whole feeling was intense and focused. he didnt even need to say a word. only "howdy georgia" after jambi and a thank you to the mastadon drummer. the gear was running great, no techs came out to adjust through almost all of the show (other than the mastadon drummers toms).
jambi was a beast. great start
stinkfist was amazing, the jam rocked.
46 and 2 was great, adam was on synth before they started playing some crazy shi"t. (they did this frequently. maynard and adam would both be pulling crazy sounds out of the synth at the same time before starting songs.)
schism was powerful, justin shined
lost keys- again justin was insane. the intro with the feedback on his bass was nuts
rosetta stoned was pure power
pushit was the most emotional song of the night. i was deeeply moved as we all were. lighters up all around the arena. it only added to their lights (more to come on that). the guys took a break and huddled on stage after this. almost like they were figuring out what to do next. what was to come was so intense
wings 1&2 were when the visual show started getting super powerful.
lateralus was def my highlight and the visual highlight as well
vicarious was a great way to end. strong and beautiful.
now for the visual aspect of it. they had one large screen that was the length of the stage and about 20-30 feet tall. in front of that were 4 smaller screens. they had 2 screens panned out, one on each side suspended above the far corners of the stage. all the smaller screens had matching visuals that flowed through all of the screens. the larger one had its own things going on. the best on the large was when "bardo being" appeared. they filled it up with smoke during wings and shot lasers from the stage and the back of the arena. they waved them around in sync with the music. we were constantly amazed. they made a lattice of interconnected lasers that were shooting from all sides of the arena. it was the most intense thing ive ever seen. they also had 3 light circles suspended above them that looked like ufos. they had geometric patterns in the center and moved about like they were seriously inhabited. i could go on and on (sorry this is so long. actually im not bc i feel like part of my life is complete now)
the bottom line is, if youve seen the youtube vids from this tour then youll have an idea of what to expect. it is sooooooooo intense live. that show was like a religious experience for me. my voice is gone, i can bearly hear, and my mind is totally blown. we rode home in silence, no tunes at all. we didnt talk at all. ive never been more drained. it was the most powerful music experience ive ever encountered.
if you think you might want to see them, dont hesitate. they wont be able to get the light exactly the same because we wont be inside at roo, but their festival setup is still very impressive.
and a note to those who think they need to be right up on the stage... not the best idea imo. we were back from the stage and in the center of the floor. it was the perfect spot to catch the lasers forming the lattice above us. we were at the focal point of the lights. i wouldnt have wanted to be closer. i could see the guys great and take in the whole experience which is what its all about.
"They won't break me because the desire for freedom, and the freedom of the Irish people, is in my heart. The day will dawn when all the people of Ireland will have the desire for freedom to show. It is then that we will see the rising of the moon."
Lateralus (extended drum solo jam with guest drummer from mastadon on toms)
amazing! i love mastodon, can't stand the singer but those dudes are incredible musicians.
god thats awesome. man my cousin called me today said he can get me a ticket for the show on the 8th, have to go. seen em 4 times but it's tool, not much music like them around these days.
that set list is phenomenal. karma for the descriptive post, kick ass!

it was sooooo bad man. they started deuling on the toms. danny would throw a sick roll out and the mastadon drummer would counter with another. then then went on seperate beats but staying in time (justin and adam held that shiz down) unreal. douple drumming is awesome. especially when 2 guys of that caliber are involved

absolutely. they did lateralus like that when i saw them a few years ago at baltimore arena. i was amazed at how good it sounded because the arena usually just bounces sound around, but not tool.
may i add that danny carey is godly. it's been so cool watching his drum set grow over the years. the man is surrounded in percussion.

yes sir. and they actually didnt play it as long as the album. the break wasnt as long. but man was it ever moving. maynard hit every note PERFECT. "i must persuade you another way"......i melted
I get them tomorrow night in Greenville, South Carolina. I was hoping they'd continue their every-other-night pattern of playing Pushit, but I guess that's out the window now....I'm still hoping for it. I can't waiiiiit.

OMG if they played that setlist I would be just so happy. 46&2 would just have me grinning so big The Roo show will be my first Tool show and I am so excited.
Man i cant wait for roo even more now. I initially hoped for the salival version of pushit (since i've heard the Aenima version), but at this point i'll take whatever.

Good point on being up front. I've seen them 4 times in all stages of their career and in an odd way, each time I see the value of being farther and farther back (I first saw them in a tiny club in 1992). While it would be neat to watch the band members perform, the experience is really best about sound-board back.

in front of the soundboard, thats where i plan to be at bonnaroo.

So how long did they play for? I looks like they were right around the 2 hour mark on that show. I really hope they pull out a few gems for us roo folk, because this is only the biggest festival in the US.
"That's the big thing about education. People can be book smart, but not really intelligent about anything else. A lot of times they just taking in all this information and regurgitate it. It's much more important to process it and personalize it. To apply it to your world, to your life. You have to walk the walk, or you can't really report about it honestly."

i bet we get that set plus the pot, right in two, sober and aenema. maybe opiate. still hoping for third eye though.
the show was so amazing! it was my first time seeing them and I was blown away. I don't prefer hard rock, but these guys are more than just power chords and loud amps. Although they have the loud amps they also have some great music! I love how the intro to several songs was bass riffs. The drummer was insane and I can't wait to see them at Roo

Third Eye I think could happen at Roo more than any other place because of David Cross performing before and after the Tool set. He could easily fill in the lines for Bill Hicks, and I have read somewhere that Maynard and him are friends so everyone that is a fan keep your fingers crossed for that. I will be happy with whatever they play but if I hear that song I know I am seeing a once in a lifetime Tool show. When was the last time they played that song, does anyone know?

^hell yeah man ;D
if you're there on the 8th maybe i'll see you. for weeks they only had crappy seats available then on sunday magical floor tickets out of nowhere...snatched them up with the quickness...can't wait...tool exactly one week before they play bonnaroo...WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEW!!!!!!!!

i have actually seen them play it. it was in nov. 02. not sure if they have played it since then. i just wanna see it again at bonnaroo. but if i get pushit either tonight or at bonnaroo or at both, i will be pleased. i have seen them 4 times and no pushit yet.
I'm excited about Tool. Haven't seen them in years. I'm willing to bet at Bonnaroo, the set will be longer and better, especially considering how much their paid and and how large and diverse the crowd is. Too bad I won't be seeing Melt-Banana this time around. They put put on a great live show and there guitarist is awesome at what he does. Oh and BTW, their new material is much more coherent than their old stuff.
we started walking out at about 11:15-20ish. i figure that bc we were out of the arena by like 40 after. i honestly didnt give a damn what time it was, bc i really had no sense of time. i honestly had a blank mind because all my circuits were totally fried. ive seen lots of people post in the past wanting a massive tool set. to be honest i wouldnt have wanted it any longer. it was the most intense 2 something hours of my life.
and on the subject of location, we were right next to the sound boards. and i personally felt it was the best seat in the house. we were in f8 which is 3 sections back and knew people in f2. they said they could see the band well but to see the lights well they had to turn around.
we were at perfect distance to see all the screens, lights, and see the band perfect.
after the set, they hung out on stage for about 10 mins and got a standing ovation from all of us in the crowd. they were very sincere and it was a mutual sense of gratitude from the band to us as well. it was like we all were soo thankful that we were able to experience it.
