knoxville, This was at MerleFest last summer. Went by myself but called my older brother who went to 50+ Dead shows to brag. Sounds cheesy, but I was almost in tears after meeting him. Just missed meeting Bob, Phil, and Mickey while I was working on Capitol Hill. They always do a fundraiser for Sen. Leahy.
i met Jack Johnson at The Norva in Norfolk, VA on 11/8/02. Me and my two friends were sitting outside the venue about 1.5 hours before the show and Jack walked right out the front door of the venue with a hoody on. I looked up and said "hey jack!" and he turned around and came back to talk to us. He asked us if we came out for the show and we said ya and he was very grateful. then he said "i'll back in a bit, i'm gonna run to the mall(across the street) and get some dvd's for the bus." he ran across the street, came back about 1/2 hour later and talked some more with us and signed anything we asked him to. This was right before he blew up big time, but after the first Roo.
Good Times.
I also have some good stories about a band from Richmond, VA called Carbon Leaf if you guys have ever heard of them! :-) my friend and i were at a local college show leaning up against the stage. we had spiked sprite drinks sitting on stage. the lead singer runs out, grabs my sprite bottle and starts chugging. he immediately makes the "bitter beer face" and shakes it off as he throws the bottle back down to me. talked to him after the show and he said "i just learned a valuable lesson, never ever grab a bottle from the front of the stage again!".

i've been blessed as far as meeting musicians. i've met quite a few, most of whom were always very friendly and personable. as far as this year's bonnaroo though, i've only spoken with tea leaf green. adrian is a friend of mine and he plays lead guitar/vocals in dubconscious... i also know a lot of the band as well, solomon, andrew etc... all nice guys. if you aren't keen on seeing somebody thursday night, make room for dubC... they are good guys and good musicians with a genuine message.

also jon fishman but he hasnt been at roo....yet. or at least i dont think he has
Fishman HAS played Bonnaroo, with the Jazz Mandolin Project in 2004.
Myself, I've met Claude Coleman and Micky (Dean ween) from Ween, though Deaner may not count since I didn't actually speak with him. It was before a Moystboyz show and I've heard Deaner hates talking to fans before shows for whatever reason, so even though he was sitting across a coffee table from me I decided to Leave Deaner Alone! I also got to meet Charlie Louvin a few months ago. Even though the guy just turned 80, he is a sharp one and a whiz w/ the ladies!?! After we told him we'd see him at Roo in a few months he looked at us and asked "So what is it you kids do at that fest besides drink beer?" I replied that we listen to the best music around, he said "No, what else are you DOIN' at that place?" and made the universial "I'm toking" hand gesture. It cracked us up.
edit; I've also met and partied with Tomato from Sound of Urchin many times. He's never played Roo, but you can see him on the 2002 Bonnaroo DVD (he's the guy w/ blond spikey heair in the Metallica shirt who says he's representing metal at Roo and that "hippies suck").
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it

karma to you kind sir!
i love those guys. can't wait till they get the invite to play at bonnaroo. i think they would be gladly welcomed in a crowd like this. i saw them play a 2 hour set last weekend opening for mule. i hadn't seen them in about a year and it was very refreshing.
Barry has a grizzly adams beard now, so he doesn't look like such a flamer anymore! jk jk, but really it's wild.... check em out sometime soon if you can.
I met Mike Gordon at All Good last year. I've spoken with the guys from Umphrey's on a few occasions after shows. I got to talk to Charlie Hunter and his trio after a gig they played at my college. They happened to go to the same Dunkin Donuts my friends and I did. I also met Marco Benevento before a gig in Syracuse.
i met jason haan from string cheese in vegas last year and keller williams in flagstaff az last year!!! keller was soooo awesome and humble offering us all of his food and signin everything he could find!!! thanx for the green chilli brownies keller!!!
I actually live in the same neighborhood as the HB and have met them several times. Really down to earth cool cats.
I met the dudes from The Hold Steady when they played an in-store performance and they are all AWESOME AWESOME dudes. I can't stress that enough. I talked to Galen, the bassist, for a while, about everything. If there's anybody that deserves the success they're getting, it's THS.
I've also met the guys from Fountains of Wayne a few times. Pretty cool dudes, especially the drummer Brian. Adam and Chris are both extremely smart dudes, pretty cool to talk to, and very bright musicians, despite what some people may say. And Jody is a rock star, first and foremost. I love that dude.
I talked with the lead singer from Cold War Kids for a while when they were doing a trek opening for Tapes 'n Tapes, and I didn't even know who he was. Then he gets on stage and starts playing. It was pretty cool, and he seemed like a pretty cool dude.

I saw them about a year ago- still great guys (in life and music).
Wait-- holy crap, you're from Yorktown? That's where I'm from originally!
Drank brews with Panic before a show a few years ago as part of a radio station contest. Absolutely great dudes! Talked to Ralph Stanley a few years ago after a show about recording with Bob Dylan. Ralph had nothing but good to say about that "fine young man". Ralph is class act all the way.
I've sent in my application to the Real World. So I'm hoping to hear back from that. I'm putting A LOT of my eggs into that basket, the MTV basket. I'm also thinking about getting a gun, and dealing crack. Being a crack dealer. Not like a mean crack dealer, but like... like a nice one. Kinda friendly like, "hey, what's up guys? Want some crack?"
matisyahu at austin city limits last year, didnt like matisyahu, ok, he seemed like a dick
I went to school with Matisyahu from 5th-12th grade....he was just Matt Miller then...he was a big Phish head who dropped out in 12th grade to follow them....we weren't close but we were friendly.....anyway I saw him a few years later when he was doing the Matisyahu thing...he had never been openly religious before (I didn't know he was Jewish at all) so my mind didn't go to Hasidic....I thought he was doing a "John Lennon Hey Jude" kind of look...anyway that day he said hello to me...asked me if I was Jewish...and when I said I wasn't he turned his back and walked away....I was shocked....then....two years after that I saw him again, ignored him...and he came up to me, as if the previous encounter had never happened and was super super nice...he invited me to come see him perform....the whole thing was really strange....just thought I'd share.

I helped setup Umphrey's stage at Higher Ground last year and met all the guys in the process, really chill cats. Met Al from moe. briefly, he was damn cool. Met MMW very briefly as well. Met Matisyahu at Lollapalooza last year. So for Bonnaroo/Jam Bands I can say that I've only really "met" Umphrey's but as far as metal goes...well I've met a ton more metal bands
i've met Ben Folds many a time around nashville... he comes into the resturant i work in semi-regularly, i've personally seen him there 3 times... (the bassist from the raconteurs also came in once...) and once at a Sigur Ros show.
and i don't think he's ever played 'roo, but i met Frank Black at Grimey's record store in nashville... also met the Cold War Kids there. and Will Oldham (Bonnie 'Prince' Billy)
Earthisbig... I was trying to get an interview with Ryan Shaw, but apparently something came up. It sucks... I was looking forward to talking to him for a bit. Got any strings you can pull?
