If by big you mean famous, I feel like it would be impossible to argue with Bob Dylan. That's not to say that him playing at Bonnaroo was that big of a deal though, since he tours constantly. By name-recognition standards, though, no competition.

who had the most dedicated fans for the most number of years, for the most number of shows????? There is only one answer.....the band that deserves to be called the Father of Jam band.....earned the title for decades of the tour grind.......when other bands were on a hiatus, this band kept plowing thru, tour after tour.........the band????
If you're looking for cultural relevance, timeliness, critical acclaim, record sales, and that perfect point of "been gone from the US" status -- you have Radiohead. Sure, the Dead, Dylan, Young, and (arguably) others, trump them in the whole canon and classic rock splash, but they simply can't create such an important appearance at this point in their careers.

well said. especially considering their last tour wasn't supporting an album, but mostly testing material for the forthcoming one. the tour iself made the appearance more important.

But the police are a reunion tour, and no matter how good a show they put on, it doesn't compare to a band in it's social and musical prime. I'd say Radiohead over the police. But It really all depends on how you define big. I imediatly thought name recognition, and went with bob dylan. Of course, if you ask this same question outside the US the answer would probably be Manu Chao.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it
I honestly dont see how Radiohead is winning this. In comparing who the "biggest" artist at Bonnaroo has been, how can it NOT be Bob Dylan (one of the "biggest" musicians of the 20th century, eclipsed only by The Beatles, Elvis and maybe Zeppelin) or The Dead, whom are basically the sole reason there IS a Bonnaroo? I mean, yeah....no Garcia, but come on. Half of those guys are "bigger" than Radiohead. Tom Petty, Neil Young, Allman Brothers Band, I would say are all head-and-shoulders more popular than Radiohead.
If Dylan is the biggest, why hasn't he headlined? I don't think he could headline, unless it was a Dylan/Dead combo type deal. That's why my vote goes to Radiohead.

Given that logic, then Widespread Panic are bigger than Bob Dylan. lol

As things stand now, WSP is bigger than Dylan. I'm not saying that they are better or (by no means) more influential but, they are a bigger band.
naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
Thank you, man. After I went against Dylan, I was sure that you were going to smite me. Thanks for proving me wrong and keeping debate friendly and respectful. That's what it's all about! IOU karma.

lol, I rarely smite people, and when I do, its not for disagreeing, its for being an asshole. Friendly debate is good, and its what keeps message boards interesting. =)
While The Dead, Dylan, and Neil Young are my 3 favorites bands/musicians of all time, I have to vote for other because I think based on recognition alone, James Brown is probably the biggest to ever perform at Bonnaroo.
i had t ogo with radiohead but it was tough to choose between them and the dead. that show last year was awesome. what better place to finally see them.

I think the concept of "average ticket price for tour at time of Bonnaroo performance" is a good qualifier on this one. Suddenly, the answer is simple.
I say The Dead. The excitement in the air that night could be cut with a knife and people just smiled and knew something special was happening. Plus hell did they start it all.
