I Saw Tool last night at the Desoto Civic Center. It was a Very Very intense visual show, and sonically stunning performance. It was my first time seeing them and it did not disappoint. The music ranged from the insanely intense to eery, soft, psychedelic space.
The stage set up had the two guitarits out in front on opposite ends of the stage, with Maynard and the drummer on a platform in back. Behind Maynard and Danny were four eight-to-ten foot tall screens, as well as 2 larger screens out to the sides of the stage. The stage was white, and throughout the night you could see that it was either reflecting the visuals from the screens, or had some kind of visual display in it that could display images like the screens did.
The light show was pretty good up until a point when it became mindblowing, but for the first hour it was mostly outdone by the viusals going on the screens. This was very very trippy stuff going on the screens. Alien humanoids, pictures of space, fractalian designs morphing in and out or each other, crazy colors and patterns, morphing in and out of glitchy, then blurry, then crystal clear pictures. The visuals were completely synched with the music, which in and of itself was amazing. Every time the band spun the music up into a knot, so too did the visuals on the screen.
About halfway through the show, 3 circular orbs decended from the lighting rig. The best image I can give you was the picture of a space ship landing. These came in down for one of the spacey parts of the show. It really gave the stage a look and feel of a UFO, or something other worldly. Thankfully, they stayed in the setup for the rest of the show, however moving slightly up and down, back and forth for that time frame. Shortly after the orbs, probably sometime just after the first hour ended, they started hitting us with lasers. They filled the room up with smoke, and then kicked on the lasers. Lasers filled up the rest of the show, along with the orbs, visuals on the screen, and lights. The last 4 songs were probably one of the most intense things I've seen in concert. It was just stunningly brilliant from concept to execution both sonically and visually.
The music was extremely tight. Tight to the point where it does maybe sound a bit rehearsed, but also tight in the fact that you could hear every guitar lick, bass lick and drum beat. All the instruments came through crystal clear, and they were loud. Tool's sound filled up the arena like a massive explosion or an unstoppable juggernaut.
As I watched the show, I couldn't help but ask myself, "how is this going to fit in at Bonnaroo?" And the answer I was left with is that I don't see how it can't. The visual aspect of the show alone is so intense, so startling, so fresh, that it really does belong at Bonnaroo. With the lasers shooting into the sky, with the psychedelic space they go into, with the intense trippy visuals, this will fit nicely in the night sky at Bonnaroo. People go to Bonnaroo to have their minds blown, and Tool blew my mind with their display last night. I may have to alter my perceptions to take this one in again...

I was at the same show, they are truly amazing. If their show at Roo is anything compared to what I saw last night, no one will be disappointed, and all this talk about Tool and/or their fans ruining Roo will be put to an end.
I was at that show as well. Just now stumbling in to work from the long drive back to Huntsville. That set was AMAZING. I took a couple of people with us who had never seen tool before and they both went on and on about how great it was.
I was a bit disappointed in the activities in the parking lot afterwards. There was a whole lot of take, and little give going on. I LOVED the meth-head who tried to run his 3 dollar truck into a Pontiac vibe to try to cut him off, only to realize about 7 dudes the size of danny carey popped out of the vibe. He rolled his windows up and shut up really quick!
[sarcasm]And the friggan pit was HUGE! Especially after maynard told everyone to kick each others teeth in![/sarcasm]

*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**
Also, I'd like to add on a serious note, after hearing the 10K days songs live (especially wings pt 1 and 2) there is no way the album does them justice. To hear the compassion in his voice honestly got me teary eyed a bit. There's no doubt he loved his mother. I knew they were powerful songs, but had no idea until last night.

I've just gotta think that they're gonna throw something else out there for us, even though that setlist is pretty nice. I can only hope they play Reflection, Eulogy, or Third Eye.

I'm kicking myself more and more for not seeing them on Saturday when they came to the Mid-American Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa. It's a 10 minute drive from my place, and for some reason, I didn't get tickets. Stupid me.
This review is making me sooo pumped to see them at Bonnaroo though! Can't wait!

reviews of all the shows leading up to Roo and past Roo here for those of you who want to keep up to date with the current tour toolnavy.com/forumdisplay.php?f=146
the festival setup will be good, but nothing will top their show in an arena setting
2 tool shows in 2 weeks!!! ill let yall know how it goes.
props to gouge for hopefully shaking some fear out of the tool worriers. they will blow countless minds at roo. i have a feeling there will be many converts, and if not, at least tons of suprised people who thought tool was "just another metal band" will have their perspective shifted
I wasn't sure where to post this information but this being the most recent post concerning Tool it is the most fitting spot. I've noticed alot of people saying tool's shows are very set in stone in order to synch with their visual show. I would like to point out, although im not 100% sure for this tour, that in all of the tour's of the past the videos were manually synched during shows. Chamella Grace, Adam Jones's (the guitar player/video creator) wife, played a large looking "keyboard". Each button was synched to a specific video clip and this is where the amazing synchronicity came from. I would imagine they are still employing the same technique therefore I would not expect bonnaroo to be a "generic" show because they do have the capabilities to make the show ocmpletley integrated to the moment as apposed to playing a set in stone show.

most big bands with light and vid shows usually have people who tour with them and manually trigger the lights and stuff during the set. if you think about it, it would be absurd to have all the lights automated and have the band follow the lights or videos.
