I was wondering what Sonic Youth's show was like last year. I've always thought they could be considered a "jam band" in a very unconventional sense and I wondered how they fit in with the Bonnaroo vibe. I've seen them live twice, and they were great in small music clubs.
I've seen some negative reviews about Beck's show, which surprised me since I really enjoyed him live (granted it was puppet free and about eight years ago) so I curious to see if the Youth was served or if their performance was closer to Homer Simpson's review:
"Styx? I just heard them on the King Biscuit Flour Hour! Now here are some of your no name bands.... Sonic Youth, Nine Inch Nails?"
"Stealing? How could you?! Haven’t you learned anything from that guy who gives those sermons at church? Captain What’s-his-name? We live in a society of laws. Why do you think I took you to all those Police Academy movies? For fun? Well, I didn’t hear anybody laughin’, did you? Except at that guy who made sound effects. Where was I? Oh yeah -- stay out of my booze."
Their set was awesome. They did a little too much new material (Rather Ripped had just come out a few days before), but it was a great show overall. Stephen Malkmus came out and sang on Expressway to Yr Skull too, which was sweet. I'm pretty sure the show's available for download on bt.etree.org too.

That reminds me of a their performance at Roo 03. Thurston jumped up on the stacks and fedback his guitar for what seemed like 10+ min (probably less), creating a god-awful racket that was just great (I forget which song it was during. Later that day back at camp, a friend (who was big into the jamband scene but unfamiliar w/ a lot of indie rock) mentioned he walked up to their tent and all he could here was noise. "What was he doing w/ his guitar?" he asked, obviously referring to the feedback incident "He was jamming," I said. "It's just not the jamming you're used to." I think he understood, but I don't think he was impressed w/ Sonic Youth. Selah.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it
I've seen Sonic Youth several times, both times they played Bonnnaroo as well as a few times here in memphis. Every single time they put on a great show. The 2003 Roo set was fairly jammed out. Last years set was a little more straightforward with the newer tunes. Less jamming. 03 was a little better, but 06 still Killed. SY is one of my all time favorite bands. Such an incredible live show.
I have the 06 set and will up for you this weekend.

yea, that set in 03, my friend's wife hated it. She wanted to leave the whole time we were there. I refused to leave though. We went to Robert Randolph later in the day and I felt like it wasn't all that good (i'm not a big fan of Randolph - love the word, just not the family band), but she loved RR. I said I thought it was kind of mediocore, but she was like "you liked that Sonic Youth crap though." Damn right I did. I'd pick SY over 99% of bands any day of the week. There are probably 4 bands I'd pick to see over them and 2 of them don't play anymore.
Steven Malkmus > Sonic Youth was without a doubt one my two favorite points of Bonnaroo 06 (radiohead being the other). You could really feel the buzz and excitement amongst the appreciative fans that chose to spend Sunday afternoon in That Tent watching two of the most prolific acts in indie rock put on two rocking sets. The collaboration at the end of the SY set was pretty special.
i loved sonic youth's set last year. the 'rather ripped' stuff is rather tepid (especially compared to 'murray street' + 'sonic nurse') but it was nice to hear live after having the album for all of 5 days.
i would lovelovelovelove to see SY on their Daydream Nation tour this summer, but they're coming nowhere near me.
sonic youth is playing daydream nation in chicago, if you are near there. Sonic Youth's set last year wasn't nearly as good as when i've seen them elsewhere. They were just as good, but the crowd was a lot less into them at bonnaroo. Stephen Malkamus coming out was pretty cool.
loved sonic youth's set last year, i really had no exposure to them beforehand, one of those bands i've always heard about but for one reason or another never gave them a listen. good times.
as for beck, that was the must underwhelming set for me personally, just wasn't feeling it even though i love his album's. left a prime spot at Amadou & Mariam's tent to check out beck only to end up returning to the same tent to catch the end of mmw after i decided to leave beck's set.

They had me oozing with nostalgia last year. Nothing beats that feeling.
I was really hoping to see Dinosaur Jr or The Meat Puppets added this year to fill that nostalgic void for me. I'd even love to see Chris Cornell do a set as he will be releasing a new solo project this year. Had I not lost hope years ago, I'd be speculating on a Soundgarden reunion. Not because it's likely, but because I might sh*t myself with excitement.
I was born in the back seat of a Yellow Cab in a hospital loading zone and with the meter still running. I emerged needing a shave and shouted 'Time Square, and step on it!

I f*cked up last year! I got WAY too drunk, WAY too early! I don't remember anything about their show! That's the first time that I've ever done any stupid sh!t like that at Bonnaroo! It won't happen again!
I was really hoping to see Dinosaur Jr or The Meat Puppets added this year...
go catch this summer's Dino Jr. tour, man. the new album is really confident and good. sounds like the cousin to Green Mind. it is to Green Mind what Hail to the Thief was to OK Computer...if that makes any sense.

Karma for that, that would be awesome to listen to.
I agree with zappaphile, it would be awesome to see them on their "Daydream Nation" tour as well. Damn Europeans, first the metric system and now this
