did you read his article in the newest spin? ... i thought it was pretty funny.
Yeh it was pretty funny. And to any who haven't I'd recommend doing so. Usually I don't read Spin but this made it worth it. He had a pretty good piece about Bonnaroo (e.g. Don't stand behind the guy with the sombrero.)

Thanks for asking. I really, really mean the utmost respect to people who like and participate in drum circles, but here's my beef with them: as a percussionist with a BA in music, it bothers me when people pick up an instrument and think there is nothing to learn about it. To me, it's disrespectful to the instrument and its cultural history. Of course this happens a lot with certain types of drums and other percussion, such as the djembe. There are distinct techniques to playing it, and I really appreciate people who take the effort to learn them. Many people who take part in drum circles know what they are doing, and more power to them, but the majority don't. Fun is fun, but it has always bothered me.
But back on topic, just after this info was leaked a family member sent me this. It makes me excited:

Amen, brother. If drum circles are your thing, whatever. Just don't make me listen to that crap. I'd rather take in a 4-hour raga than listen to a bunch of hippies hitting drums w/ no rhythm or technique.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it

As an experienced ?drumcircler? I totally agree with you guys. I become annoyed when someone continues to play badly or off beat as i am trying to zone out to the drums. That why i usually try to find a few like-minded folks to play on our own, instead of seeking out the groups of 15-20 people with 2 experienced people and everyone else just slapping and banging, "cuz its fun!"...........follow the guy with the flute and it may rain headies

^^^Not sure what you're getting at. There are indeed worse things. And yet, somehow, drum circles are still annoying. But I appreciate your comments, bawnuhrew. I'll jam with ya.
