For those of you who are not aware, Bonnaroo 2005 featured Herbie Hancock as the "artist-in-residence". He played a set with his own band, in addition to guesting in a number of shows and heading-up Superjam. I thought this was a great idea, but alas it didn't return in '06.
So how about it? Who wants the artist-in-residence back?
Perhaps if we muster up enough support, Superfly will take notice.
Someone like Robert Randolph or Les Claypool would be perfect for this role. Allegedly Claypool won't be there, so I think RR is our most likely candidate, although he really wouldn't fit in guesting with the Police or Tool, he can (and has) sit (sat) in with Widespread Panic. We could also see a RRFB show, possibly the Word, and can you imagine a Superjam led by Robert Randolph? My life would be over.

Waits would be amazing, but I think I read somewhere that his manager said he will not be at roo this year. I sure hope I'm wrong though . . . small change got rained on with his own .38 . . .
Tom Waits just being there is awesome alone, to see him with a ton of different acts, that'd be cool as hell. My personal pick for artist in residence would be... either Adrien Belew, Neil Young, or Robert omfg-i-would-die-happy Fripp! It's about time we got some Frippisms. Maybe Brian Eno?

Yeah, thats the word. He apparently hates outdoor settings (Acoustics). Was some very sad news for me after seeing that fake rumored lineup with his name on it. It really is a shame. I wonder if Les has ever tried to convince him?

I vote no. Les and Warren jump around every year and they are not labeled with this ridicoulous label. Why should one artist (i understand that herbie is a legend).....be labeled as "o... he's everywhere...when everyones everywhere. It's bonnaroo...they are all musicians...why should one be "the artist resident" I guess i don't get it!!!!
I just think WSP and herbie planned on playing together....so with his set, WSP set, and the superjam...he was the artist in residence......
I'm guessing the no name guitarist for ________(pick a jam band at roo) played just as much that weekend, but went unlabeled!!!
I agree with suitcasemurphy. I was excited in 2005 that Herbie was the artist in residence and then I never even saw him once the whole weekend, and I saw a lot of music. People will always be guesting here and there, they don't really need to name one guy to "officialy" do it.

Prince would be a pretty sick artist in residence, as would Maceo Parker or Adrian Belew. I wholehartedly support the Artist in residence idea, herbie was awesome in '05. Chic Corea or Bela Fleck could also pull it off.

For those of you in opposition to this idea, I concur, it probably isn't a necessity, what with people like Les and Haynes running around all over the place. However, look at last year . . . no one really did the equivalent of what Herbie did in '05. Claypool played with his band and Oysterhead . . . I believe G-Love guested a couple sets . . . Trey had Superjam and Oysterhead . . . but no one in particular was the "whore" of Bonnaroo which we have seen in years past.

I would like to see the artist-in-residence return but I don't think it should be a lead guitar player. Herbie on keys was perfect, now gimme horns...Clarence Clemmons or Branford Marsalis!

It was rumored that Ed Vedder of Pearl Jam was going to be at Roo last year, but canceled do to his daughter being sick. He might have performed with a number of artists (Tom Petty, MMJ, Cat Power, & others), but probably not part of Superjam (which I figure was already planned to be the debut of GRAB)

It was Jimbo, and it freaked me out when I first read it. In the past few weeks of reading the BB it seems like its really just one of those "insanely stupid, taken waaaaay too far" jokes that the BB is infamous for.

Neil Young seems like a very natural choice for this position in the roo but on the other hand he coiuld probbaly (still) be a headliner....(even after becoming "unhip" like three times in his career i think he has legions of fans who feel at home in many different genres of music) but
Robert Fripp is a brilliant idea.

I am keeping hope alive for a Claypool appearance at Bonnaroo this year. Why not hope?
As far as Artist in Residence, I enjoyed everything Herbie Hancock had to offer in '05, and I welcome more. The thought of Tom Waits makes me salivate.

The rationale, as far as I'm concerned, is that he's already confirmed for several other major festivals this summer, has been outspoken in his support of all things Bonnaroo, and that most things on the bull board are not to be trusted, to say the least.
forgive me if I am mistaken, but didn't Herbie only play on 3 sets in 2005. I saw all 3 of them, and did not hear of another sit-in. He couldn't have sat in on Saturday at Bonnaroo that year, b/c he played a show in Memphis that day.
The sets Herbie played on in 2005: His own set with the Headhunters (friday) Superjam with ?uestlove, Pino Pallidino and another (late sunday) Life during Wartime and another song with Widespread Panic (last show sunday)
I was sort of disappointed by his lack of sit-ins being labeled "artist-in-residence." I've seen Warren do more sit-ins in one single weekend than that.
But, that being said, the superjam that year was hands down the best set I saw, besides DJ Krush.

In '05 Warren played with Gov't Mule, then he played with Dave during his set, then he also played with Widespread I believe on both nights because Widespread headlined two different nights that year. If you consider two different Widespread nights as two different sit-ins, then Warren did 3 besides his own set with his band. he may have possibly guested with others that I am not aware of.
The Nightwatchman @ SXSW crazy set with slash, les claypool, and perry ferrel. He could just stay on the mainstage on Sunday and play with wilco white stripes, wolfmother, and what the hell WSP
