Ok. I was at a bar, and it was on mute. I swear i saw the dude from Flaming Lips as a correspondent on Jaywalking. Am I the only one saddened by this? Aside from the fact that Leno is a huge douche, The Tonite Show is a little mainstream a forum for Bonnaroo promotion. I mean I've heard blurbs on Conan and Carson, but Leno?!?!Anyone else see this?

Wayne at Large (photo credit) Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne will appear on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno this Thursday (3/22). Wayne was spotted interviewing a bunch of "weirdos" as Jay's SXSW correspondent in Austin last week. Let's hope it's as funny as those hilarious "Jaywalking" bits!
Don't like Leno. Love Dave. But am absolutely obsessed with Wayne Coyne. For any Flaming Lips fan can tell you that when Wayne's on stage he tries really hard to make the shows seem like your just hanging out with the band and partying with them too. I love the Flaming Lips!!!!

Well first off I a m HUGE lips fan. But i'll be the first to admit that Wayne and Co seem to be doing everything they can in the last few years to sell out as much as possible...and really, who can blame them? They were totlaly unknwon for tlike 15 years and now they are in their forties....I think i'd milk Yoshimi for all it was worth too....
Also i think the time has come to realize that "selling out" is really not as bad as we have be "sold" it to be.
And yes Jay Leno is insanely mainstream from what i recall (i haven't watched tv in 5 years though....so i could be wrong) But i also saw early footage of the stuff that ws to be sent to the Leno show...he was apprently going out of his way to cover the non flashy things going on at SXSW (as is well known and has been pointed out even on this forum, the whole festival is just an industry strip show...everybody there is trying to get noticed)....so it kinda cool that he was into the non-mainstream (or lesser mainstream)aspects.
But lets face is BONNAROO is (almost) mainstream....okay its not all radio-freindly crap for sure but freaking Radiohead and Tom Petty played last year...and this year the Police reunion....so yeah we don't have to endure crap like Jay Z or Pink but it's not like Bonnaroo is NoFunFest or anything....
With all that said, yeah it'd be cooler if every band that was great could be known only to you and your ten friends and still have money to do crazy things but it doesn't work that way
If i have any problem with this at all it just that Tv itself is at all involved. But we can't seem to gte popel to stop watching it...seems easier to kick smack or ciggarettes...so i gues if Wayne needs the money of the canned beer-drinking, tv-watching populace then he needs to be on tv.
PLUS he's a ridiculous ego maniac (like most rock stars seem to be) and so he probably loves the attention.

Yea, I love the Flaming Lips as much as anybody, but the bit was lame. /I haven't watched Leno in a while, but I am convinced I could write for that show. It was so lame.

I was watching a video: www.blender.com/video/987/SXSWWayneCoyne.video and it was interviewing Wayne at SXSW and talking about him doing the Leno thing. Then at the end when asked what he the Lips were gonna be up to he said that the Lips, The Shins, and Modest Mouse were going on tour this summer. Awsome, gotta check that out!

Wow really? i find the Shins and Modest Mouse so boring so unoriginal. They both sound like every other alt rock band from the last 5 years... i never understand why Flips fans like them... maybe i've been listening to the wrong stuff

Just because I like the Lips doesn't mean I can't like other types of music. I like all genres of music.
Oh yeah...since the Shins have been around since 1999 (technically 1997 as Flake) and Modest Mouse around since 1993, that would make them "original" if you're comparing them to bands less than 5 years old.

Oh no...i wasn't trying to start a fight i guess my words were to harsh I mean i just can't figure out what the attraction to these bands The critics love The Shins and everybody seems to love Modest Mouse And of course it doesn't mean you shouldn't like other kinds of music...in fact one of the most likeable things about the Lips is that they don't really make a very easily definable "kind" of music
i was just hoping to understand it....
[glow=red,2,300]t's not everyday you read about Modest Mouse being 'unoriginal' and 'sounding like every other alt rock band'.[/glow] And yeah it is pretty often that you hear about Modest Mouse being described as unoriginal and boring in some circles. But then some of those circles feel that way about all mainstream music which is just elitist and stupid ....but it depends who you talk to about music
Anyway is there a particular album i should re-listen to? Or are these band more about the live experience thing? Do i have to see 'em live to "get it"?

I wasn't trying to start a fight, either. I guess my words were implying that as well.

I second that!

I'm relatively new to the shins, but I know they've been around for a while...I have to say that I love their current album, Wincing the Night Away...particularly track 4 which is Phantom Limb. I listen to it just about every day. I've never seen them live, unless you count SNL, but I don't count that, so probably noboby else would, either. ;D It took about 3 listenings to the other songs on the album to "get it" and I fell in love with several songs. I plan on purchasing their other albums. Besides, we all have heard they'll "change your life" (for all you Garden State fans out there).
As far as Modest Mouse goes, I'm not their biggest fan, but I do respect their music and think they are pretty original...when I hear them, I know who I'm listening to.
