TOTALLY AGREE!! This fest isn't just fun for us, it's fun for the men and women rockin it! This year is stacked with bands I have seen live a few times so I am looking forward to seeing this in action and really having some past experiences to judge the Roo shows by.
I totally agree! The atmosphere seems to invigorate the bands and the 3 hours shows allow them to expand the usual set list. Of course having Great Bands that usually bring it anyway doesn't hurt.

Haha, Beck just didn't do it for me. That's why Thom Yorke said the Bonnaroo set was one of his favorite ones they've done in a long time, which is why they're coming out with a DVD for it....which is going to be amazing!
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**

I totally agree. I love to see the little bands that are not used to the huge crowds but are excited about playing for so many people rather than freaked out! Gives the music a whole different level of energy! Case and point, the freaking Electric Eel Shock show! The boys Rocked that crowd!

I love the small bands tryin to get out there, but what i love most about roo is the bands that already put on a sweet show, like Mule, but then step it up even more for the roo. Those are the ridiculous shows.
i didn't see beck, but i d/led the show and i like it. can anyone tell me exactly why beck was no good?
It's hard to put my finger on. He did all this skit crap that didn't really work well. it was like he was trying unsuccessfully to be the Flaming Lips or something, but in a kind of lame, goofy way. He pissed off a considerable group of people around me by having his puppets perform "Loser". He lip synched a song while dressed up in some sort of mascot costume. He had his band perform this stomp type routine around a dinner table. He played WAY too many songs off of Sea Change at times where it killed momentum. The only thing people seemed to like was this puppet video he made for Bonnaroo. And afterwards, I found out he'd been doing that for every stop on that tour. In fact, the entire set was scripted top to bottom with the exact same gimmicks and skits. And it really showed.
I don't know, I saw him last year right after seeing Buddy Guy who was amazing then seeing Amadou & Mariam, who were amazing, and right before seeing Radiohead, who was amazing. So it was this semi-disappointing flat set in a day otherwise chuck full of amazing sets. It just sort of stuck out as mediocre.

Yea MMJ was...
I left Back soon as it started cus it wasn't loud enough... i think. but i retreated to tent only for a bit to recharge my batteries, and i herd beck do a few partial cover songs ("do you realize" was perty cool)
It seems like in a festival atmosphere, the bands definitely take it up a notch. I dont want to say that they are one-upping each other, but just bringing it since every one else is bringing it. It is like this at the Roo, and definitely like this at Coachella - see Arcade Fire set 2005. Even at Winter Music Conference in Miami its like this, where djs are bringing something a little special. Of course bands really turn it on if they get a late night set.
It is this "bringing it" that puts a smile on my face while I am at these festivals, because you know that you are seeing something special.
And I agree that the Beck show was slightly dissappointing.
First of all, I definitely know that bands bring it at Roo even more than they usually would. Even the ones who bring it anyways just seem to bring it a little more. I also know for a fact that Bonnaroo caters VERY VERY well to the artists needs when they are there. They do everything, complete full catering to there trailers. But another thing is, you would probably play a stellar show if you knew that there were 50,000 of your fans standing in front of you willing to wade through anything and bare anything and even go into complete camp out mode just to see them. I really love, though, when the small time bands get that same attention but there not used to it and they just lose there shit. Like in 05 when I saw Old Crow Medicine Show, those good ole boys poured sweat and blood for that growing very interested (in the groovin dancing kind of way) crowd!!!! Can't wait for them this year!!!!!!!!
"Disobedience, in the eyes of anyone who has read history, is man's original virtue. It is through disobedience and rebellion that progress has been made." Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900), The Soul of Man Under Socialism
"You're either on the bus or off the bus." Ken Kesey
"When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." Hunter S. Thompson

The Mule set from Roo 05 was the best Mule set I have seen, I am expecting an awesome late night show this year.

Old Crow Medicine Show is on the top of the "must see" list this year. I can't wait either!!!
Some of the best "emerging" artist sets I've seen at 'Roo:
Jack Johnson and Robert Randolph in 2002 My Morning Jacket in 2003 and 2004 (after that they really weren't "emerging") Polyphonic Spree in 2003 Kings of Leon's noon tent show in 2004 - blistering Damien Rice in 2004 - perhaps my favorite Roo set ever Ray Lamontagne in 2005 Iron and Wine in 2005 Grace Potter in 2006

Good list. I'll add Tea Leaf Green in 2005 to that.
No one has mentioned yet that Robert Randolph's performances at Bonnaroo, especially the first two or three, were HUGE. Those shows were definitely influential in growing his fanbase.
Particle made a big splash after playing super late night.

Roberts set latenight 04 is the best, rocking show I have ever seen. Being there with Molly helped in many was but, I rank that show above Phish Deercreek 05, It, and many Dead shows. I have to believe that Robert is sitting in with NMAS this year. Cant wait!! Maybe a duet with Ben Harper on Ground On Down!!!
