Tickets can be purchased exclusively at www.bonnaroo.com beginning February 23rd. But they’re going fast as each year’s festival has sold out quickly
I'm not sure how many of you out there enjoy Kings, but I am thoroughly obsessed with them. So, I'm putting the question out there, when does Kings play on Saturday? I would absolutely kill for The Hold Steady --> Kings of Leon in either a tent or on the second stage (hopefully not overlapping with Ben Harper). Any thoughts?

man. that's absolutely perfect. seriously. I'm obsessed with both of these bands. the subject matter of the two is pretty similar too with the drinking and drugging and girling -- all in excess.
I've tried both of these bands, and neither has caught my fancy. I hope for you that this does come true, I guess it would save me from a big conflict if they played one after the other at either a tent or one in a tent then the other on which stage.

I saw Kings of Leon in both 04 and 05 (i think thats when they played) but i am not really all that into them. Lyrically they dont seem as authentic as The Hold Steady. I dont know, maybe its just that Craig and the boys are much older.
Outside of playing relatively straight forward rock, I really don't think the bands have much in common. KOL's lyrics have always fallen a little short, imho, but I still love the band and the lyrics work for the type of music they're applied to. Craig Finn's lyrics -- they're just in a different category. The guy is a poet and many of his lyrics can stand on their own. The music is fabulous in it's own right, but those lyrics were what drew me in and what has kept me there.
I'm indifferent to KOL, but I'm super psyched to see the Hold Steady. I saw them @ The Southgate House in Newport, KY a few months back and it was freakin' great. They're a lot of fun to watch perform. It's the perfect music to drink to. Craig's lyrics are the shit. I'm gonna try to be up front for this one.
^i'm with ya there, I just got into em since they were one of the first bands to announce this year. Really looking forward to seeing them, especially "Chips Ahoy!"

I agree. I mean, Kings of Leon remind me a little of a modern day Rolling Stones. They're posers, and they're young, and they're not quite as smart as they wish they were, BUT...they still know how to write good hooks and hit the right grooves at the right time. I think we're witnessing the birthing pains of a band that will probably be around for awhile.

Definitely agree with this. Hold Steady sort of remind me of some of my favorite indie British acts. Great lyrics that carry the music even further.

sunnyd, I was at the Southgate show too. I was up in the balcony right above the stage. You from the Cinci area? Going to any shows soon?
Anyway, I'm a huge fan of both bands. Agreed that The Hold Steady have some killer lyrics, close to poetry. And agreed that Kings of Leon are similar to The Rolling Stones. But, the thing I like about KOL is that they make no qualms about being the rock stars that they are. They're young and living it up, and have no problems with playing in your face, gut busting rock and roll. They truly are the rock stars that our generation is lacking.
The Hold Steady are older, more mature, and have a much more developed sound (even though they only have three albums of material as this band, Finn and their lead guitarist Kubler were in another band called Lifter Puller, which has some great tunes as well).
I think they are a good fit for a one-two punch simply because I can drink myself stupid to both of these bands. They both fit that "bar band" billing, granted in different and unique ways, but they both fit it. Trust me, I was feeling pretty good at both of their shows when I saw them. (And they both kick ars live.)
I really dig the Kings of Leon. Missed them in '05, won't miss them again. If The Hold Steady are anything like KOL, I'll probably like them too. Any suggestions on which Hold Steady CD to start out on.

This is tough -- all three of the albums are exquisite. I guess I would say start out with the first though, "Almost Killed Me", it's truly an epic rock and roll album. "Certain Songs" was the first Hold Steady song I heard and it instantly won me over forever. "Positive Jams" should be the first Hold Steady song everyone hears though -- it grabs you by the nuts and makes you listen to everything Craig Finn has to say. If you enjoy "Almost Killed Me" you could move on to either "Boys and Girls in America" or "Separation Sunday", they are both fantastic. Honestly, The Hold Steady is probably the only band I'm a huge fan of where I can say ALL of their albums are equally beloved by me. That's saying something.

Oh, and as far as the two bands being similar, it's not really so. Kings of Leon are really more like the Stones, where the Hold Steady is basically the E Street Band being fronted by a nasally Jack Kerouac. The similarities come in the subject matter of some of the songs (Drugs, Alcohol, Girls) and the simple fact that these are two of the truest to form rock n roll bands in the world right now
I love the Kings. Great guys too. I just got hooked up with an early copy of their new record and it is f*ckin awesome. They've progressed on every release. Would love to see them on the Which stage

Actually, I'm going to disagree with you here, exitmusicroo. IMO, I think "Boys and Girls in America" is by far their most accessible record. As far as starting off, rolandd, I'd say go with that one. The other two, although freakin phenomenal, are definitely not as overall accessible as the new one. Finn's vocals on "America" are more like vocals rather than poetry readings over music, and there is more of an emphasis on the piano driving the songs, which adds a definitive likeability.
However, I 100% agree with your assessment of KOL vs. THS, exitmusicroo. Excellent points there, and right on target.

Thanks for the request. I'll start with the first one. And I got that they don't sound the same. I totally get the noncomparising comparisions.
