Okay, so this is not just another, I want Trey Anastasio at Bonnaroo thread. This is more a "do you think it's responsible for Superfly to sign Trey on if he has a serious drug problem" (ie heroin) thread. I sort of touched on this in the Daniel Johnston thread (that is promoters signing acts to whom Bonnaroo might not necessarily be healthy to attend), but I'm not sure how I'd feel about it. I don't know if his problem is serious or not, but given the mixture of drugs he was taking when he was caught, it's disconcerting. As much as I'd love to see Trey at Bonnaroo, I'd much rather the guy get healthy.
What are your thoughts? Am I overreacting here, or does anybody else share my concern?

Like I said in the "No Trey" thread. I would rather Trey go to rehab than play shows. I love his guitar playing so much that I would prefer to see him play many shows over the next couple decades than do a few shows this year and the one after and get worse. Not saying that WILL happen, but when you mess with that stuff you never know for sure.

He needs to kick the drugs not performing...
Sounds like he already has had a serious drug problem for a while, but it's his problem. Provided he can perform, he should play--it's his livelihood. It would be worse if he stopped performing or was not allowed to perform because of his habit.
This is a good point, and had he handled things differently, then no it wouldn't be good to book him. However, Trey has taken the responsible route and admitted he has a problem, gone into rehab and thanked the officer who arrested him. If he's tough enough to admit he has a problem and not just push the blame elsewhere, then he deserves to keep playing Bonnaroo.
well, its been 2 months since the arrest, which if he has gone through rehab is a reasonable period of time to establish some kind of recovery, depending on how bad his habit was. i'm sure if Trey wasn't up to playing shows he, and his support group, family, agent, manager, or whoever would make the decision together whether or not he could play and under what circumstances.
i don't know if you can place the burden of responsibility on SF for just doing what they're supposed to do: trying to get the best artists together to put on the best show(s) possible. if they asked Trey to come to 'roo, Trey has to decide for himself whether he feels capable of doing it. one of the most important parts of the recovery process is re-learning how to live outside of a protected environment and still do what you gotta do.
personally i'm suspending all judgement on the matter until i see him at langerado in < 3 weeks.
Maybe I'll throw myself to the dogs, but my back's not to the wall Maybe I'll lay some bricks for the man, but the days just aren't that long So if I settle back and chill will I see far enough to feel the angel's dream? I thought it was the Story of the World!

Oh, no doubt he should-- and will-- be back. I think the issue is whether he should be back this year, so soon after the incident and so soon after rehab. I seriously doubt he'll be there this year, and I also wouldn't be surprised if he has to cancel is appearances at Langerado et al.
I also wouldn't be surprised if he has to cancel is appearances at Langerado et al.
well, i suppose its possible but it wouldn't seem logical to me at all. consider: they only -announced- his Thurs. late night show on Jan 31st...a month and a half after the arrest. why do that if you thought you might have to cancel your regular appearance at the show?

Trey was visibly cooked at Bonnaroo 2002. Listen to the rant he does just before the encore. He is waxed out of his brain on E and god knows what else. His drug problem is nothing new to anyone who has been paying attention for a while. The fact that he got popped has just brought it out in the open to people who don't know what someone on drugs looks like.
The Roo signing or not signing Trey has nothing to do with his drug problem, considering Bonnaroo is infested with drugs. IT has more to do with the fact that he has played the fest every year except 2003.
The idea that somehow his drug problem would prevent him from playing Bonnaroo, when he has signed on for 10K lakes, and Langerado, AND just added a night show to Langerado, is just completely ridicuolous imo. Why would his drug problem prevent him from playing a "hippie jamband festival" when he is already signed on for 2 "hippie jamband festivals?" I mean seriously, think about that for a second. He's gonna play drug fest in march, and drug fest in July, but b/c he has a drug problem, he's not gonna play drug fest in June? What?
And there is absolutely ZERO chance Trey cancels Langerado, as he has just added a night show 2 weeks ago, and sold it out in an hour.

Yes, Yes he does
What I'm doing when I'm staring out over the crowd is, I'm listening for the music coming out of the air and then I'm just playing that... And if I look right into the lights, my glasses have moisture on them so they start to break into prisms and stuff and then voom, I'm gone. -Trey Anastasio
i think everyone is making too much out of it. hes not going to jail. hes not going to be in rehab for 4 months. and superfly isnt going to care about treys issues. do you really think that trey is the only performer at roo with bad habits??? i think not. plus trey is headlining other fests. like someonelse said if trey isnt at roo i doubt it has anything to do with his issues. warren haynes didnt play and it wasnt drug related. hes just been there every year and is at alot of other fests. that sai i think he will be at roo.

well i just read somewhere that trey costs around 70k a show. so i think hes doing ok. i think everyones making way more of it then they probably should. theres no evidence that trey is going through tens of thousands of dollars worth of junk a month. just that he got caught with personal amounts of it. i agree its bad news. especially the heroine. but i dont think its going to affect treys summer tour. and while im ure its a hit to the ole bank account i dotn think treys gonna be living like any of us anytime soon.

I agree with you completely on Mr Johnstons situation. Trey however is a bit of a different monster. Flat out, Trey has the workings of an addict. He will never escape this for as long as he lives. Be it the stories of free basing on tour, doing smack, or any other combo you can think of. Either Trey spends ALOT of time getting his life together and not being around the music scene, or he continues with his current life style like tons of other musicians before him. I say this because its the same for every addict. Your first course of action is to eliminate every "drug buddy" you've ever had and just put them out of your life until you can handle it.
I've done almost everything excessively at one point or another, and have had many stints in both in-patient and out-patient rehabs. Sadly, either Trey takes a few years off to fight his demons or we're in for many years of Trey relapsing and hopefully not ending up like alot of great musicians before him. I hope he does the right thing and takes care of himself. This is the exact point I was trying to get across in a previous thread. Most junkies are good, normal folks. They make 1 stupid mistake and people ridicule them as the scum of the earth. Maybe this is good context for everyone who thinks like this.
I was born in the back seat of a Yellow Cab in a hospital loading zone and with the meter still running. I emerged needing a shave and shouted 'Time Square, and step on it!
