She's more of a metronome than a drummer....a cymbal-happy metronome.
no way, Jack runs the show and doesnt just work with a metronome, Meg has to read him and change as needed. She is really damn good at it. Watch some live shots and really pay attention to the way they interact. Without Meg there would be no White Stripes. Its a chemistry thing. If another drummer played for Meg it would be a very very different show, they would probably need to start using set lists. Casual fans of the band will not understand this.
Having good chemistry with someone else, or knowing what someone else is going to do at any given time does not make you a talented musician. I've seen them live (3 times) and she is there simply to keep-time for Jack(like a metronome). I really dig him but the fact is: if another drummer played with him, it wouldn't be "The Jack White Band" anymore. MAYBE she's competant (big maybe)but to say that there would be no more White Stripes without her is absolutely ridiculous. Jack could play by himself (or with a bottom shelf drum machine)from now on and it wouldn't hurt the overall sound at all.

^it wouldn't hurt the sound deffinatly, but it would change the sound. i've said before meg's comparable to ringo star. she's not that good, but she compliments jack very very well. i'm excited to see the stripes, never seen 'em before and was doubtfull i'd ver get a chance to

if somehow at 2am Meg White walks into youre bedroom and lays down on your bed and starts getting naked,, whould you tell her she was a bad drummer? bet you wouldn't mind her being a metronome then. Duble time baby!
i know that's got nothing to do with anything, but I threw that in there for grits&skittles
Agreed Meg isn't the best drummer, but the White Stripes as an entity WOULD cease to exist if she left not because of skills but because of image and mystique... The interaction they have on stage is borderline creepy... They used to be married for a short period actually, and Jack was the one that adopted her last name of White, which is quite interesting... In concert now, Jack consistently refers to Meg as his "baby sister", which is even stranger... Jack constantly credits Meg for having the more extensive record collection and better taste in music. So much so, in fact, that she decides most of the songs they are going to cover (including Dylan cover "In The Cold Cold Night")... Basically, my point is that the two of them together is the White Stripes, and having nothing to do with talent, if one left, whichever one that is, the White Stripes would be no more

Not sure I agree but that is a MUCH better arguement!
BonnarooDetective, I think you're actually right... For some reason I thought it was a cover... However, they do an outstanding version of Love Sick (and I'm 100% positive that's a Dylan cover)
Post by BonnarooDetective on Feb 26, 2007 18:15:27 GMT -5
Yup, Love sick is great . . . ball and biscuit . . . one more cup of coffee . . . I love the fact that they do so many Dylan covers. My favorite, of course, is Isis. They must play that!

meh, the White Stripes would cease to exist without Meg.
The beautiful thing about the White Stripes is that anyone can learn to play a white stripes song but no one can ever sound like the White Stripes.
To say that Jack playing with a drum machine wouldn't hurt the overall sound is an insult to both of them. A drum machine would sound so out of place, it would be such a cold mechanical rhythm that has no place in what is natural sound from start to finish. Read about where these albums are recorded because it matters. Your not going to find equipment that even comes close to anything like a drum machine. Meg is the heart beat of the band.
BonnarooDetective Ball and Biscuit is not a Dylan cover.

Hah, you caught me on the same thing. I have a version of that with Dylan, and my brain was way off amidst a fifteen page paper about the origins of the Swedish welfare state. You are correct sir, karma for you.

With all due respect, no one can ever sound like The White Stripes via Jack White (and his amazing guitar mastery)....sounding like Meg is another story entirely. Me saying that him playing with a drum machine wouldn't hurt their (his) sound is not an insult to him....simply because he IS their sound. Yeah, she is definitely an essential part of their overall image and vibe but, she's just not a very good drummer. I've seen them live (several times) and listened to all of their records extensively, so i'm not just talking sh*t. She just isn't very talented. When she's able to start a side-project without relying entirely on the talent and appeal of "others", then I will apologize. Until then, I have no choice but to believe that Meg is simply one of Jack's "rock star" accessories. IMHO.

Karma for you because I totally forgot about that take of the song they do together.
There is this intangible idea of "talent" being tossed around. What is talent? Can you define it in terms of a musician without just listing people you think are? Do you expect any to believe your 7 year old drummer and Meg White have the same level of talent? Jack White doesn't play a very "technical" guitar which is what is most often mistaken as talent these days. So its easy to play, its simple blues based guitar, does that mean he is not talented? Just because anyone can take the time and hit the same drum at the same time as Meg doesn't mean anything and doesn't prove "talent" one way or the other.

On a much lighter note, any big collectors here? I got about 55 official releases between all the pressings of the albums, the singles and promos and what not...love to chat about collecting WS swag.

That sounds about as compreshensive as it gets! I envy the record collectors. At the end of the day there is something tangible to show. Particularly the cover art. I've got nothing but mp3's.

One thing which hasnt been mentioned yet is how, unlike almost any other band, the drums follow the guitar in the White Stripes. No way could you use a metronome - or any drummer who didn't understand what Jack is all about. Meg is constantly having to change the timing and pattern of what she is playing to keep up (and that's definitely in a good way!!!)

wow, i hope that gets released before roo ;D
I think it will be very close. I probably would not mind hearing some songs for the first time at Roo, would be exciting!! Jack has always had a thing about the timelyness of music and the moment. He does not like to spend a lot of time recording the album and once it is done he wants it out. So know we get to see how fast Warner Brothers is. With all the leaking on the net nowadays I am really surprised labels are not pushing albusm out ASAP.
