Hello everyone. This is my first post, so if I'm putting this in the wrong place or am breaking any other forum rules, please don't be too harsh on me.
Last year, I went to Bonnaroo for the first time. Most of the reason I went is that my favorite band, Radiohead was playing. However, I was also interested in Beck (which turned out to be a pretty lousy show), Steel Pulse (a great show), Bela Fleck (great), and others.
I was turned on to MMJ, who I had never heard before. I am now a big fan and they are one of the main reasons I am heading back in '07... that and the great vibes and atmosphere.
Anyway, I just wanted to throw Explosions in the Sky out there. They are one of my favorite bands in the world right now and I think they would be a perfect fit for Bonnaroo. Are there any other fans here? Is there any chance that they will play Bonnaroo?
Btw, I just got an early copy of their new album "All of a Sudden, I Miss Everyone". It is absolutely brilliant.
I'd love to see them. They're playing at Coachella this year, and they may be doing the festival circuit. I'm going to see them in DC in March and I really hope they're good live.

I'm thinking about going to that show, too. I live in eastern Ohio, so it is the closest date they have right now.
However, I may wait to see if they are doing Bonnaroo before I make the long trip to Detroit... though I wouldn't mind seeing them twice.
They were at Austin City Limits this past year. The videos don't really do them justice, they are REALLY good live. Musically it's great and hearing their music outdoors alone is awesome, but at ACL they also got to play at night which is really important if they play Bonnaroo. They have an intense light show that adds a lot to the music. They would work great late-night with someone like the Flips or the Secret Machines.

So I heard their name enough and had to check them out finally. I always like to think of myself as having a wide range of music tastes. Im a total freak when it comes to Salsa, Samba and meringue. And on the other side of things Im a huge Chet Atkins fans with Mingus infused into my soul. I always like to think I give a band its fair shake when I check them out.
That said, I really didnt dig these guys at all. The new dics theyre releasing is solid and all. It grabbed me at first, but couldnt sink its meathooks in. After the first 5 minutes I was wondering why I didnt just throw on a Mahvishnu album. I wouldnt compare these two side by side, but it is in the same vein.
Now there would be a Roo act that I would crap my pants over, John Mclaughin and The Mahavishnu Orchestra.
I was born in the back seat of a Yellow Cab in a hospital loading zone and with the meter still running. I emerged needing a shave and shouted 'Time Square, and step on it!

I would suggest starting with the album "Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place". It is the album that got me into the band and is a little more accessible than their latest release. I'm liking the new album better and better the more I listen to it, but "Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place" is impossible to top.

Give it a chance... I beg of you.
Acessability is not the issue. Im a die-hard Mars Volta fan, so stomaching this is no biggie. I just dont dig that album. Maybe if I see the other Ill download it, but its definetly not a priority now.
I guess this band would fall right in with my feelings on MMJ. I completely and utterly respect people musical choices. However, I listen to these bands sometimes and just think to myself "Well, I like Dark Side Of The Moon too, but gimme a break.". Like I said, I respect everyones choices pertaining to music. I can see why people dig them, theyre obviously talented. Just not my cup of tea.

^^^My feelings exactly. I mean, there are acts that people dig that make me wonder about their personal tastes. But groups like MMJ, Arcade Fire or Explosions are groups that you would rarely find me playing in my personal time. I've tried them out (sometimes repeatedly), and they just don't connect with my sensibilities. However, I'd love to see any of those groups in a festival setting. It's part of what makes festivals great. You get a chance to see groups you might not necessarily connect with album wise but maybe you'd connect with live.
But yeah, Explosions is good stuff if your into shoegazing. I sort of view them as background music, but around here (Austin) they have a hardcore following who swears by them. They've sold out two shows this month alone. To each his own.

Well... I can definitely respect your POV. I feel the same way about Oysterhead. I respect them as musicians and I understand why people like them, but it doesn't appeal to me... AT ALL.
I'm just saying that I would not advise someone who is just getting into Radiohead to go right for Kid A or Amnesiac. You have to ease your way in.
However, you are an experienced, informed music-lover, so I respect your decision not to get into them. Though, as a fellow music-lover, it is tough for me not to want you to listen to the best that the band has to offer before you make your final decision.
Btw, I wonder why I have -1 Karma? Did I do/say something offensive?

I can't get into Tom Waits, but I love Explosions in the Sky and Mars Volta. We are a rainbow of musical tastes on here
Ill absolutely agree with that my friend. Thats the beauty of music, it means so many different things to so many different people. Its all a matter of perspective.
The Mr Waits comment surpises me. Some folks get bad intros to him. I like to split up Toms recording history into 2 categories. 1973-1980 was a time were he stuck to alot of convertional "bar tunes". Then you get into the early 80s which is were my love affair with his music really begins. I like to refer to his current music over the last 2 decades as "Donkey Music". Its when he really started incorporating unconventional instraments into his albums with weird vocal effects and whatnot. Some folks are more receptive to his early stuff, some to his later. Seems like youre the type of fan who keeps an open mind and checks out everything, but if youd like me to suggest some stuff Id be more than happy to.

See, this is how a music discussion should be conducted. Too many people get all up tight when someone rejects a musical suggestion.
Dont get me wrong, Ill definetly take your advice and check out the other album. Im just not gonna jump at it. If theyre playing Roo Ill definetly check out more of their stuff.
Btw, no clue about your karma. Nothing youve said has stuck me as wrong. I guess dont read too much into it. I got negative karma the other day for a stupid thread I didnt even start. Dont let it ruin the great convos on this board.
