So, with days until the artist announcement, I wanted to start an MMJ thread to talk about their performances from 'Roos past, last year's marathon face-melter and hopes for this year....
i want to see them at another fest. and langerado has too many downsides for my tastes. and i didnt enjoy mmj in the daytime at roo. if they are at night at roo i am almost sure to be at something else. last year it was umph/bisco. but i wanna see them at night and putting on a killer show so i can see if its just not for me or if ive just seen a couple mediocre shows. i wrote the black crowes off after their afternoon set at roo, such a disapointment... but the allgood headline was one of the best shows i have ever seen. maybe mmj will be at all good this year. seems like theyd be a good fit for a headliner or a latenight there. so thats my mmj hope for the year ;D

The 04 set was something special... For me it was last year's latenight. I left Petty like an hour and a half early just to get a prime spot for MMJ, thinking that we would be among the first... Turned out there were around 2,000 doing the same thing. Met some cool kids, got feelin "extremely good" and proceeded to watch Louisville's finest SHREAD. Along with Radiohead, MMJ was the highlight of my Roo 06
As much as I was blown away by the '06 late night, it was that rain summoning performance of '04 that can be used as a marker on the path of my life. As that show wrapped up, in that intense downpour, you could hear a good portion of the people freaking out with excitement -- I don't mean cheering, or clapping, or anything -- I mean complete Beatles coming to America type freakout. It was absolutely electric for those last twenty minutes or so and then it all just came to a head. I was wondering if they were going to all get shocked to sh*t or just start floating into the air. Then, it ended. I spent the next ten minutes making desperate drunken phone calls of awe, from a port-a-john, hiding from the rain. One of the more emotional moments in my time on this earth.
I seen them like 4 or 5 times now and that late night show was by far the best. The afternoon show at Lollapalooza this year was great, but they didn't seem to be as devoted to it as they are Bonnaroo. Saw them 3 months ago at the Riviera as well, was right on top of the stage, anyone else from Chicago go to that show?
I could go either way with MMJ, honestly, but the set in 03 on Friday around 1ish was just stellar! I loved every second of that and wanted alot more. Only saw half of the 04 set because there was someone else (Robert Earl Keen) I wanted to see, and I loved REK's show, but I would have liked to witness the end of that MMJ show from all I've heard. We had a great square dance in the mud as REK played Road Goes on Forever that will always be one of my fondest 'roo memories. But yeah, MMJ was the 2nd band I ever saw at 'roo (I had seen them twice before in Louisville, once opening for Dylan), and that show was great.
iknow I exalt you for that photo. I heard them first on a CMJ track and then caught them at a local club in Columbus with only 250 other folks. They blew the place up. LAte night is perfect for them. They are one of five bands three of which have to be at roo for the event to be a major success. Okay it would be fun anyway. Have any of you heard Jim James play with M ward and Bright eyes. THey sound pretty good together. My friend told me they call themselves "the monsters of folk."

Yeah the '04 rain show was awesome, and the '03 show turned me on to MMJ in a big way - but I've got the most specific and special memories of the '05 show. I remember working my way up the side to get close enough to get a decent show of the stage and those puppets right during the most intense part of Run Thru. Plus you can't forget the Prince cover near the end classic stuff!!
Just found out I was gonna go see em in Athens, GA in March, at the same place I'm gonna see TV On The Radio. Never seen 'em, missed them last year because I was so friggin worn out. Looking forward to seeing them at the 'roo also, because they WILL be there.

We shared experiences pretty closely. I can pinpoint this show as one of the defining shows of my life. I had only heard OF My Morning Jacket. It was my first Bonnaroo, and as I was standing out watching Gov't Mule on the main stage, grabbed my friends and said "It's time to find out what this My Morning Jacket is all about." From the first notes I heard I knew I had found what I was looking for. As the blistering heat turned to wind, then clouds, then the "Return to Thunderdome" it got more and more intense.
I've seen them 13 more times since then. I also haven't missed another Roo. This band opens eyes and ears and hearts and doesn't let them go. They have left an indelible mark on the way I perceive music. Anyway...a Bonnaroo without MMJ would still be the A-Bomb, but here's hoping they come back. They're the icing on the cake at this point.
Hey mothersky, I got myself a ticket to one of the Athens shows too. Can't wait to see them back in a small club after the last tour.

i've seen them twice and both times they blew my mind, one of my favorite bands of all time, and am very excited to see them this summer (if for some reaosn they're nto at roo i'll find a way to see them somewhere else)
