Man, I missed Motet. And that sounds like a gem of a show. I had seen DeVotchka in Lexington, KY and loved it. So I wanted to support em at Roo as well. Their live show has a great energetic party feel. Wine bottles onstage, a toast with the crowd, and tuba with red chirstmas lights! It was a nice welcome...
the motet was a pleasant surprise, but overall, i'd have to say i was most impressed with damien marley...his set was a huge party and there was a really good vibe in the crowd.

Yeah. good call. My buddy was very front of that crowd, stage left. Man when that old dude came out and got everybody hyped before the set...and Marley comes out to 40,000 just bouncin'!
In '05 Xavier Rudd stunned me. I wasn't at all familiar and was just wandering around but once I caught a few moments of his set I sprung roots!
Last year it was the Dresden Dolls. I don't know why but I was expecting a retro glam band thing and that would've been fun but instead "punk cabaret" totally won me over. I've since become a fan.

Yup D. Marley show was great. What about flag guy??? He had the hardest job on the stage.
On a side note...we saw Marley at Vegoose also and the set was exactly the same....Boo on scripted concerts.

It was still good though.
Word! It really is a fun show. And he chooses obscure(if there is such a thing) Bob covers which I respect.
As for scripted concerts...I frown on em too. And at Roo we can always expect something special. Though the Flaming Lips stick to a pretty predictable set and that's a phenomenal experience! ...one of the few exceptions.
well obviously i should go with radiohead. i wasnt all about it and it blew me away. one fo my top shows ever.
but i gotta give it to grace and the nocturnals. i heard a bit of the studio stuff and figured if im up and feeling good ill check it out. damn the live show is not like their studio stuff. what a freeking show. tied for the best daytime roo show ive seen with j-5. wasnt expectign a show like that frirst thing in the morning.
toubab krewe is up there too. wasnt familiar with them before they were announced for roo and they were incredible also. wood bros>moonshine still>toubab krewe. i dont think that thursday night will ever be topped.
In '05 John Butler Trio put on one of the best shows I have ever seen. I barely knew anything at the time and walked away one of their biggest fans. I cannot wait to see what they do this year!!
Buddy Guy. I figured the guy would just be sitting in a chair, not doing much... But last year the dude was on fire, all over the place, walked around in the crowd... amazing.

Saul Williams in 05'. I was camping for mars volta, and i caught all of saul williams, he ended up being one of my favorite shows of the weekend and i had absolutely no idea who he was before he started. Awesome artist.

I think that I had the opposite experience with Saul. I had heard so much unrelenting hype, that I was let-down by his set. It just didn't seem as "second coming of christ" as everyone lead me to believe/expect. I'm sure it was quite good, but it didn't live up to what I was (repeatedly) told to expect. I'd like to try it again, now that I have a different outlook/expectation.

I'm not sure how i wouldv liked it if i had those expectations, but like i said, he was actually one of the few artists i didnt check out before roo, so i was just blown away being upfront and ready to pretty much just space until the mars volta came on. I think its something you also have to be in the mood for, my friend didnt really like it that much.
I completely did not expect to like shooter jennings. I thought he was really good live. Ziggy I know we are cbus mates but I am starting to see your goofy photo in my sleep. Can we switch it out for another goofy photo?
I'd have to go with Joshua Redman in '03. I really didn't know who he was but good lord could he play that saxaphone, plus a bunch of other instruments. Easily one of the best jazz shows I've seen.

Yeah what they said!! That Grace Potter set was awesome - if memory serves she closed with a great version of Farmer John. She could play again next year, that would be alright by me.
Last year... Friday night MMJ was awesome Sat night I got to see The Avett Bros. for the first time and they were insane! I bought their new album as soon as I got home.
In 06 I'd have to say Motet and Dungen. Motet was groovin, Dungen was rockin'. Both bands I'd never seen before or knew much about, and both amazed me in different ways.
In 04 it goes to Damien Rice, hands down. Their drummer didn't even come, and he still killed it.
Matt Costa, I was a fan of songs that we sing but wasn't really sure what to expect. It ending being a great show that it really kicked off the weekend.

blew me away. i heard them just come on stage, and by the middle of the first song... i was already down front dancing my ass off. i hope they come back this year!

Last year I'd say there were a few surprises...
1. Buddy Guy - I was pretty sure Buddy Guy was going to be good, but he ended up playing what I thought was one of the best sets of the fest.
2. Tortured Soul - Granted I love house music, but I've always thought their studio stuff was a little lacking... Live they absolutely blew me away!
3. Cat Empire - Never even heard of them and this was the set that really kicked the festival off for me. I hope I get to see them again this year... Possible a late night set
