skaggs, exhalted! Much of rap is dissed by people who have heard little more than rap's top 40 hits. That would be like all the folks i know who don't like Ben Folds cuz "brick" wasn't their thing.
Now, go listen to "The Rain" and "Don't Matter" by Akon. And tell me it doesn't make you think of bob marley, at least a little

I never said anything about his freestyling skills, im sure he is talented in that sense, but rap and music are two different things in my mind. I'm not too into rap now, and when i say its not great music it can still be great rap, but i'm not too into that, so i cant really judge, and i dont. We can both agree that rap doesnt have a place yet at bonnaroo, though.
Dude lil wayne sucks @ss to me. And I know all about him. Seen him live twice. Sucks b@lls. I love rap hell I love just about all music but that nonsense is nothing more than nonsense.
^^^I disagree, but that's cool. To each his own. I think Lupe, Mos Def and Talib are played out sound wise using allusions that every socially conscious rapper and their mom has used a thousand times and with too many horns to boot. But then, most people who love rap disagree with me.
I thought Common's freestyle at bonnaroo was the worst freestyle I've ever heard. He used the word sh;t to end 4 of the first 5 lines of the damn thing. I enjoyed his show though.

[Chorus: Akon] I see you windin n grindin up on that pole, I know u see me lookin' at you and you already kno I wanna fuck you (fuck you), you already know I wanna fuck you (fuck you), you already know
If I hear anything less talented EVER, Ill post it as well. I try not to ever hate on someones music cause I often catch hell, but ma'am please never recommend Akon for Roo. Im afraid someone would see it all tore up and book him on accident and not realize it till the next day. I mean what happened to actually running some good game to a girl like Barry White did or Al Greene and the list goes on. Those guys were somethin all men could look up to admire for being ladies men. Now the kids have Akon and instead of classic lines like "Lets get it on"....Its "I wanna fuck you"....its a joke. Same thing minus the talent to keep from using the word fuck. And as far as comparing him to Marley....well i wont touch that one......RIP in Bob, Im sorry. But Im sure you probably dont like some of my music and thats cool, Im still in the minority about Tool who is catching hell on here for good reason I guess. But in the Roo spirit, I hope you get Akon if you really want him there...as often said on here, to each his own. Lil' Wayne Ive had to listen to with some of my friends, def. not for roo but I heard a few cool lines from him.

^^^^ Did i say, "Go listen to a song by akon that everyone knows, then tell me how much you understand it?" No. Did you bother to go listen to the other stuff? If it's not your cup of tea, i totally understand, but the whole point of my previous post was to encourage people to look beyond what they already know when making a judgement about someone musically. Especially when It's only one or two songs. Sadly, "I wanna f*ck you" is what gets airtime, and what the teenie boppers want to hear. That doesn't mean he doesnt have other good sh*t. And actually, I am a HUGE Tool fan and would love to see them at Bonnaroo as well. Tool is another group often dismissed by people who don't know anything about them. Akon-The Rain The pressure's buildin' up I feel like givin' up How in the fuck am I gonna back my first album up Well everything has changed It'll never be the same Nobody know me Then everybody knows my name And I feel so ashamed I never been the kinda nigga that would complain But it's so crazy man It's no different Everyday it's just the same thing
Now it's been months out on the road On tour doin' so many different shows Head spinnin' feelin' like it's gonna explode And I just wanna know If anybody out there's feelin' me I'm losin' my mind And I can't believe I let this shit get the best of me And now I gotta let ya know
One's got me insane Cause I can't stand the rain It's hitting my window pane A little too much And now I gotta let ya know One's got my face in a frown Aye Cause I can't stand the sound Of the thunder that's crashing down Upon my house Now I gotta let ya know
Now I got no more worries now My pocket's fatter now Look in the mirrow my reflection looks different now You're gettin' bigger Akon you need to settle down Why do I feel this way Should I be happy Should I just ignore Everything I've been given Please help me lord It's all over But I can't escape the rain
Now it's been months out on the road On tour doin' so many different shows Head spinnin' feelin' like it's gonna explode And I just wanna know If anybody out there's feelin' me I'm losin' my mind And I can't believe I let this shit get the best of me And now I gotta let ya know

Akon-Don't Matter Nobody wanna see us together But it don't matter no Cause I got you babe Nobody wanna see us together But it don't matter no Cause I got you babe Cause we gon' fight Oh yes we gon' fight(We gon' fight) Believe we gon' fight(We gon' fight)
Fight for our right to love yeah Nobody wanna see us together But it don't matter no Cause I got you
Nobody wanna see us together Nobody thought we'd last forever I feel I'm hopin' and prayin' Things between us gon' get better Men steady comin' after you Women steady comin' after me Seem like everybody wanna go for self And don't wanna respect boundaries Tellin' you all those lies Just to get on your side But I must admit there was a couple secrets I held inside But just know that I tried To always apologize And I'ma have you first always in my heart To keep you satisfied
Nobody wanna see us together But it don't matter no Cause I got you babe Nobody wanna see us together But it don't matter no Cause I got you babe Cause we gon' fight Oh yes we gon' fight(We gon' fight) Believe we gon' fight(We gon' fight)
Fight for our right to love yeah Nobody wanna see us together But it don't matter no Cause I got you
Got every right to wanna leave Got every right to wanna go Got every right to hit the road And never talk to me no more You don't even have to call Even check for me at all Because the way I been actin' lately Has been off the wall Especially towards you Puttin' girls before you And they watchin' everything I been doin' Just to hurt you Most of it just ain't true(Ain't true) And they won't show you How much of a queen you are to me And why I love you baby
Nobody wanna see us together But it don't matter no Cause I got you babe Nobody wanna see us together But it don't matter no Cause I got you babe Cause we gon' fight Oh yes we gon' fight(We gon' fight) Believe we gon' fight(We gon' fight)
Fight for our right to love yeah Nobody wanna see us together But it don't matter no Cause I got you
Oh oh oh oh oh Cause I got you Cause I got you Ooooh Cause I got you babe Cause I got you

Sorry for the obscenely long post, just want some people to open their eyes. I'm not saying don't like Akon, i'm just saying, DISLIKE him for some good reasons, not just cuz you don't like the hits

*A great late-night addition for Roo this year would be a live preformance of "KEEPINTIME"! If you are not familiar with this amazing 'group', you really need to give them a shot! This is a mind-blowing collaboration of some of the best hip-hop turntablists and legendary jazz & soul percussionists alive. DJs like Cut Chemist, Numark, Madlib, Shortkut & Babu improvise beats and cuts, layering classic breaks over & into a funky, throbbing backbeat provided by the incredible likes of James Gadson, Paul Humphrey and Derf Reklaw! It is one of the best shows any real hip-hop fan will ever see, i promise! A dvd of one of their performances was released in 2004 and is definitely worth the purchase price. You won't be sorry. It's available at www.KEEPINTIME.com.
It's true that they perform very rarely, but if Bonnaroo isn't the right venue then I don't know what is. Several of them are Roo veterans and they definitely have a more "live"/"jam band" feel that alot of other acts in the genre. It would be perfect!
I just want to thank Oatmeal since I have been looking for this for a couple of years now. I was at a buddies house and he had it tivo-ed from Sundance or IFC and we thought it was the greatest thing ever, but I never knew where to get it. Thanks, Oatmeal.
Now you guys can continue to argue the finer points of Akon's lyrical abilities.
Seriously? You think they would go over well? I have seen them once in Portland and it was strange enough there being in a room full of white people with an artist repeatedly calling you a cracka
Yeah, I don't think Dead Prez would go over too well. Most people who see them are going to need to know what to expect, and I really don't think they'd fit in well with the general Roo vibe.
Oh, and add another Lil Wayne supporter. The guy has some talent as an MC.

Glad that I could help. After I talked-it-up for months, my girlfriend surprised me with the dvd for Valentine's day a couple of years ago and i've worn it out. Karma for the great taste!

Its coming right back at ya.
I just got an email from B+ this morning (I emailed and asked if they had any copies of the dvd laying around - the site said they were sold out) and he said that he just found a couple copies and he was sending them my way. Thanks again. And my buddy who is getting one for his birthday, is also thanking you without knowing it.

This whole thread is kind of making me sad. I love hip hop and some rap but the fact that somebody just posted the entire lyrics a crappy song on Inforoo to try and prove something that just can't be proven just makes me think this place is going downhill.

hip/hop threads generally suck in any context. it's an odd genre- one part music, one part performance art, one part dance party.

i haven't got the new one yet, but i used to really dig temporary forever, fear of a black tangent was pretty good too so i'm sure his new one will be good, busdriver has always pushed boundaries imo

I'm not familiar with his other stuff (I would like to check it out now), but I think the new one is a lot of fun. He vaguely reminds me of two of my favorites (Aesop Rock and Pigeon John) while still managing to be totally unique. "Casting Agents and Cowgirls" succeeded in breaking Andrew Bird's recent monopoly on songs that are stuck in my head (in the good way). That song is hooky.
