Malkmus for sure. Not sure if you're familiar with his latest album, but you can check out the video for "Baby Cmon" here: the-rivalry.com/lana/video/malkmus2.htm
Plus with Mark Ibold playing with Sonic Youth, he might join Stephen and we may get some Pavement songs. Well, I can dream, anyway...
My friend wants to see Matisyahu, but so do I. We'll be checking him out at the Sonic Stage earlier, then play things by ear. I'll probably end up checking out a bit of both, because I definitely want to catch some Malkmus.
My boyfriend wants to see Matisyahu, but I would rather see Stephen Malkmus. We've talked about going separately, but don't know yet how we'll handle it. (He's said that if we go to one, he'll go see Malkmus with me.)
Could these guys be any more different in sound and content?
Matisuyahoopla is more charismatic and more accessible, both lyrically and musically. That said, Malkmus is a living legend in indie rock. He's one of the smarter songwriters out there as well. So while right now you might be all about Matisuyahu's performance, future you might kick now you's ass when he picks up 'Slanted and Enchanted' or 'Wowee Zowee.'
i'm not familiar with Malkmus, so i'll definately be hitting up Matisyahu... i saw him about 2 1/2 months ago in Asheville at the Orange Peel and he rocked it
I saw Matisyahu open for Trey twice in two shows in a row last summer, and it was the exact same gimmicky-set he played both nights. He even told the same story twice, about how he was on PHish tour in '96, and how it was an honor to play with Trey now. I guess he was trying to impress the phishies in the audience.
I honestly never want to see Matisyahu again. He is a gimmick. I thought he was decent after he came out with Trey at last years Bonnaroo, but after seeing him a few more times, I realized, this is his 15 minutes, and it'll soon be up.
I know that sounds harsh, but it's my personal perspective based on my experiences with him. I could not, in good faith, see him over someone as prolific and talented as Stepehn Malkmus.

I didn't know jack about Malkmus before seeing him in 03 and I had a great time. If you're a fan of the guitar don't miss it.

In the fall of 1992 I saw a show at Red Rocks with Pavement, Sonic Youth, Primus and Mudhoney. Any chance of a Mudhoney late addition to roo for a complete flashback?
Malkmus is an amazing song writer with a great voice to go along with his creations. Everyone's mentioned the guitar, but the voice is oh so powerful... i'll be headed to Malkmus for sure, maybe catch some Matisyahu since I missed him at Coachella, but it'll be tough to contend with Malkmus for me.
I have never heard either one.......I am partial to the gutar soooooooooooooo.......still undecided
If you meant "partial to the guitar" and haven't heard Malkmus....do yourself a favor and check him out. He's definitely my favorite guitar player du jour. His playing is all about undpredictable, surprising choices; the tension between resonance and dissonance; fantastic, catchy hooks warped just a touch out of tune or out of time to force you to catch up with them; seamless integration of tones and effects used for truly expressive purposes. The stuff that I've heard doesn't have a lot of guitar pyro-technics, just the tastiest most expressive kind of playing you can imagine. Oh yeah, and he's an absolute top notch songwriter/lyricist in my book.
For the record, I'll definitely be at Malkmus. I wasn't very familiar with him (hadn't heard his solo stuff at all) before the lineup announcement and he's become one of my favorites.
I really, really, really enjoyed Matisyahu's set last year. If you haven't seen him he is really worth checking out for a song or two. He brings a ton of energy and puts on a really fun show. I've since found myself relatively uninterested in listening to records or recordings, and am not too inspired to check him out again. I feel pretty much the same way about Robert Randolph, whom I hugely respect, so I don't mean that as a knock at all. Obviously Matisyahu and Robert Randolph are very different artists, but I have similar feelings about both of them: you've got to see them once, the energy and passion they bring is incredible and inspiring, but once you've heard a few songs you've pretty much heard what they do.

Alright, I just saw matisyahu for the first time at the gorge and it was incredible. I'm actually surprised by how everyone is nay saying matisyahu. His music is incredible, inspiring. He has a simple three piece band; guitar, bass, drums. no djs or sampling or looping. It's straight reggae/rock and roll. His guitar player is solid I think he's different than the one on live at stubbs, much better. and of course Matisyahu's voice is incredible...not to mention his beat boxing. my favorite part of the show was when matisyahu beatboxed over a simple guitar riff...it was AMAZING.
MATISYAHU IS HERE TO STAY! he is a great musician and only adds to the festival/music scene. great artist, great music, incredible vibe.
that being said i'll probably hit up both matisyahu and malkmus.
i saw matisyahu and atmosphere the other day, and matisyahu was amazing. he put on a great show and his music was great. he really worked the crowd too. and it is pretty sweet seeing him in person. i would say check him outl.
I saw Matisyahu's set last year and its incrediable....he was a talented and unique artist BEFORE mainstream picked him up. Definatly check his set out, you won't be dissapointed. His band is actually pretty good too. He's a much better live then at the studio.
I happened to stumble my way to Matisyahu's set by accident, and he was great. I was actually disappointed when I got home and downloaded his studio albums, because the studio versions were so terribly different than the live performances. Listening to his studio albums I keep feeling like "he needs to mature a bit and then release some new material"....but at Bonnaroo it felt nothing like that at all. The concert had wonderful vibes.
