Am I the only one who was more than a little pissed off at the crowd for the Elvis Costello show?
I'm a huge Costello fan, have been all my life. He was the selling point for me to come to 'roo. The man is a legend, in my book. But at the show, close to the front, you could tell everyone was just there because they wanted good seats for Beck or Radiohead. I got dirty looks for jigglin' my bediggle during "Bedlam". Four guys next to me were SLEEPING during his set. One of them got their head stepped on by a drunk older woman, the only other person in a ten foot radius of me who was down with Costello.
I don't know, it upset me quite a bit. I like Beck and Radiohead, but Costello got a lot of disrespect. Plus, a 3:30 time slot? Weakass.
This happened for a few bands I was really psyched to see. There were squatters of all sorts. For World Party I had to excuse myself to the front and assure them I was leaving right after... tons of indie kids were squatting for Folds and Bright Eyes. But then I was victim again due to hippies squatting at Sonic for moe before World Party's smaller set and then before Doughty all these Soulive fans were waiting.
It sucks, especially when you count some of these artists as your favorites and you have to watch people napping through them while your good time is ruined (or hindered in that you can't dance or get up close). Luckily, people were cool once I explained why I wanted to be closer, but it was still frustrating.
yeah, I only squatted when the band who was playing was someone I liked. I was in front for Costello because I like him, but I left halfway through his act. I didn't care about Beck, I wanted to see MMW and/or Claypool. I knew I wasn't going to get a good spot for Radiohead, so I didn't even try, even though I could have sat through Beck and had a really really good spot (like 5 feet from the fence in front) and Radiohead is one of my favorite bands. Even though I like Costello, I wasn't too impressed by his act...
Costello put on a hell of a show.. and I feel you guys. I was really far back behind a bunch of people sleeping or just sittin in a circle smokin a J. I was really pissed they weren't there for Elvis. He was so good
actually most of the artist in the late Saturday afternoon slot got a little screwed...since there are so many beck and radiohead fans....I mean Im sure alot of people left early or didn't even see people like Claypool (me being one), or whoever else was in those spots due to heading over to beck/radiohead.
with a big festival, you're going to have squatters... they don't ruin my good time... if they want to miss a bunch of music to see Bright Eyes or Death Cab, that's thier 180 bucks at work, me shakin my hiney to the music that's going on at the moment is my 180 bucks at work...

different strokes..
I'm not concerned about their good time- I was just lamenting the possible loss of mine. Doughty was a great example where I lucked out, but you could tell that these massive Mike Dought fans were all stuck at the sound board or farther back because of th Soullive squatters.
i agree it can suck but i guess it just means that massive soullive fans are massiver then massive doughty fans. i dont see how you can fault someone for being a hardcore enough fan to get a great spot. now if they are actively talking shit about the other band thats different. people who chill out, smoke, or nap dont bother me either. soemtimes ya gotta do that to stay ready for the latenight. i dont think its meant as disrespect to any performers. ive laid back with my eyes closed at many a roo show. even if i dont fall asleep its good rest and i sitll enjoy the music
yeah, actually one of the best memories I have of Roo '04 is me laying down and listening to Gov't Mule as they rocked out... fell asleep, but I woke up to some great tunes
I may have squatted for a couple shows, but never up front. I prefer to chill back in the field where I can dance or sprawl or whatever. Trying to be up front is to hard at bonnaroo.
I do regret missing Cypress Hill, but I needed a good spot for Radiohead. Don't wanna be too far back.
I sat down pretty close during Elvis WITH my back turned, and with a t-shirt over my head, but only b/c it was so f*cking hot I couldn't stand to face the sun.
I LOVE Elvis, and boogied backwards with my a** on the ground while smoking a J.
At World Party's Sonic Stage set there was a super tall hippie guy next to me with an umbrella open, against the front, sitting down but holding the umbrella right at eye level. He didn't give a crap. He blocked the view of plenty of people behind him and kept poking myself and a few others with his umbrella (and he was right in front of the lead singer of World Party, which had to make him thrilled). He was squatting for Umphrey's, which I understand, but it was pretty flippin ridiculous.
Anyway, this wasn't meant to be a pissing contest on who has the biggest fans- I just thought it was cool when squatters are totally cool with the vibe and respectful that some people might want to get closer for their desired bands and then get out. Fortunately, some were cool about this, but others were not so kind.
haha thats just funny for me, funny statement. deathcab vs. oysterhead who will win OYSTERHEAD!!!!! Oysterhead should have been a headliner but I'm glad there were other shows during them to seed out the crowd. That was really the only show I "sat" for but I love Steele Pulse so it wasn't like I was just there waiting for them.

i missed the costello show (helping buddy with heat exhaustion back to the tent), but my dad saw his set, and said that there were a lot of people just sitting around, not getting into it, waiting for beck and radiohead.
in my opionion, if you wanna just sit on the ground, take a nap, and just smoke, there is plenty of room toward the back to do that. leave room up front for people who want to enjoy the music standing

I caught the end of Costellos show. I think that What Stage is big enough for people who want to enjoy the show and people who want to lay down and smoke. None of this was never really a problem for me at any of the shows. Those who wanted to get down got down and those who wanted to nap and smoke....napped and smoked. I never once saw people who were unable to see a show and boogie because of nappers in the way.
again i say if ya wanna stand up front get there early. dont hate on someone with more dedication to getting a great spot. now for the people who come pusihing through saying sorry the whole way 10 minutes before the show starts deserve to be kicked in the nuts. if you were really sorry you wouldnt be doing it. thats the only time i didnt feel the roo spirit is when someone forced there way past all of the people who got there early just because they know the roo spirit wont allow us to send them back to the rear. everyone that went by i just made sure they heard me saying " i wish i was a raging as.shole so i could get up front for shows without waiting". i got a few dirty looks back from a couple people of the not a very nice persons but they soon noticed that they had dozens of angry looks aimed at them and that i wasnt the only one that thoguht they were the rudest as.sholes on earth. also at the wood brothers there was a 40 something couple like 10 rows from the front. they stood the whole time but the morons brought these 2 gigantor lawnchairs right up front and left them open the whole show and they didnt sit in them once after the music started. just taking up space 5 people could have used and tripping anyone tryin gto have a good time in the area. some poeple are just iconsiderate morons whou wouldnt make it 2 days if life were still survival of the fittest. ok theres my rant!

At the Sonic Stage, it's not just a matter of getting there early- bands are switching every 45 minutes- but someone arriving at noon to squat for a 3pm show on a stage where four bands will come and go in that time is being pretty inconsiderate too.
If you are that hard up to see a band that's small enough to be doing a Sonic Stage appearance but still feel the urge to squat for hours, than I think you need to just go see that band when they perform at a club. This is a festival for chrissakes, with bands happening all around. If you're sacrificing 3+ hours of the busiest part of the day to prevent others from getting to the front of 2+ bands so you can catch a single Sonic Stage performance, I think you're being pretty inconsiderate to those actually trying to enjoy the festival.
Anyway, just my two cents. Hey, squat all you want- I got there early enough for the bands I wanted to see and ended up with a dozen autographs and 4 setlists. But watching people yawn and not clap during a small band's set sucked to watch.
me personally ive never had a hard time getting pretty much up fornt without being an a-hole by getting there 20 minutes early. the headliners are different but for most shows they are just wasting their time. its funny to me to meet soemone camping for a spot 3 shows from now and then come back 10 minutes before the show starts up and say whats up i see your still here to them. to each thier own i guess.

i thought Elvis and his band were really great! i loved the horn section. but it was hard to enjoy it in the HEAT. it was very hot during that show. IMO it is freaking crazy to sit in one spot all day long just to see Radiohead, Beck or anyone else. it was just too fucking hot for that crap.
are the "squatters" the same as the "lay flat on the ground-ers"?? how can they do that? i don't get it. who can lay flat on the ground in the middle of the day and sleep while hundreds of people are nearly walking on your head. i was amazed that people would have their heads, arms, hands, and feet right in the path of everyone walking by. and not just people, those golf carts too. i expected to hear of someone dying because a golf cart squished their head!!!
ive noticed a slight trend of the people who ask how can you spread out and lay there or sleep with a great show going on in this heat. it seems that alot of them are the ones wishing they hadnt missed the late nights. i was more then happy to lay on my back under the not misting mist tent for buddy guy and damien marley. still enjoyed the shows immensly, caught a nap between sets, and had the time of my life at dr john, grab, dumpstaphunk, and sasha! i laid through most of petty and im glad i saved up for the umph/bisco madness! so when your head hits the ground at sun up after dancing your ass off for hours on end and the heat is too much to get any good sleep its easy to lay around daytime shows.

bonnaroo is such a marathon of music, sometimes the only way to catch some z's is to nap in between sets. On Sunday, after Bela Fleck, my cousin's girlfriend ( a first-time-rooer) remarked, " On Friday I thought all these people passed out on the ground were crazy, but it's pretty comfortable."
speaking of laying on the ground in the middle of people, I had to help a drunk girl to a good pass-out spot after Radiohead, because she was about to lay down and pass out right in the middle of the main walkway!
she just stopped, sat down, and began to laydown.. no one else was doing anything about it, so I felt it up to me to get this girl to a safe spot where she wouldn't be trampled by hundreds of people.
she called me sweet and gave me a drunken kiss on the cheek.. I felt good about myself
