do you think it should be a ribbon or fabric type belt or a more constructed belt. i have a little chain belt with colored pieces in it. it almost looks like a chain necklace. would that work? i also have a sort of thin rope belt with turquoise beads on it????
also...so i tie it at the smallest part of the waist. do i tie it loosely or belt it to my waist tightly?
im nto wearing this to roo. im going to wear it with a skirt so i dont have to worry too much about being hot or uncomfortable..im more worried about what looks right with it..
Belting a dress or top snug (but still comfy) at the smallest part of you waist (higher than your pants waist line) shows how small you are and keeps the top from looking shapeless. It also brings the eye up to give you a longer leg line... Thin and leggy with an hourglass figure! The material of the belt does not matter as much if you are just wearing it around town, but just make sure the the style is appropriate for wherever you are going. (the chain sounds dressier than the rope). The biggest thing is to think about is proportion. If you are smaller a larger belt might look awkward, and if you are larger a smaller belt could make you look larger than you really are. The same rule applies to any accessories.. Purses, jewelry, etc. Remember that the most important things in fashion are fit, proportion and appropriateness.

We popped into a Value Village over the weekend and found slip-ons that are brand new for $3. So even if they get muddy and gross, I won't mind tossing them out at the end!
Random, we also found a brand new pair of Toms for $6! Damn straight I picked those up.

Hey, have any of you ladies ever bought any Patagonia travel dresses? They seem perfect for Roo, but they're pricey. Specifically I'm looking at this little number:

^^i do not have any of those skirts but i do have a few of their products and can say they have lasted and been well tested on the trail and just in general wear.
personally i try to bring things to bonnaroo that i can part with easily. i dont know if i would go white... im a karma paranoid person, if i brought white it would be a mudaroo for sure

Thanks! I was hoping their stuff was long-lasting based on the price tag. I've been trying to get in the habit of buying fewer, better quality things rather than more, cheaper things (but I love to shop and its haaarrd!)
Definitely would go with the wine colored one rather than white... in addition to karma paranoia--I have that too!--I'm just a slob when I'm camping, no way that white would ever stay white
Love the convertible dress! They look Roo appropriate and figure flattering for pretty much any body type. I'm trying not to buy too many dresses before I go because it was so much fun to shop there last year.

Probably a real n00b question but is there a lot of shopping available at Roo? I hadn't really thought about it, I've been thinking of this like I think of my pack in-pack out camping trips. As an obsessive shopper you'd think this question would have occurred to me by now!
I'm still waffling on the Patagonia dress only because I have to replace SO much camp gear before the trip. But I appreciate the feedback ladies (and I'll probably give in at the last second, ha)! I did order an incredibly cute smocked cotton sundress on Amazon over the weekend, if it fits I'll post some pics.
Yes, there's lots of shopping. Everything from little knick-knacks to clothes to tapestries to art to musical instruments to hammocks. It's an awesome assortment of stuff.

i thought most of the shopping was very fair. you are wise to find shakedown. the pseudo one and the real one a they have better prices and often have the same items. the fake shakedown is on one of the main roads outside of centeroo but the REAL shakedown is located out further...usually in BFE and you can get some DEALS. its also fun really late at night
i bought some NICE cotton/linen things at a place inside centeroo. they were one of a kind things. there was also a man who made one of a kind dresses and stuff with handmade music art designs. omg they were great. they were pricey but they were also pretty much works of art. other than that...i shopped in shake down. you can get most anything you need cheaper there such as tshrit, sundglasses, bandanas, fanny packs etc

I know I'm not supposed to be in here. And I'm not looking, I promise. But I thought it important to share this fashion tip from Tina Fey's new book:
"When it comes to fashion, find what works for you and stick with it. . . By nineteen, I had found my look. Oversize T-shirts, bike shorts, and wrestling shoes. To prevent the silhouette from being too baggy, I would cinch it at the waist with my fanny pack. . . Find something like this for yourself as soon as possible."
Last year I went to India (which is why I missed 'roo). I found that dresses were clearly the way to go in the humidity but when the sun was really beating down on you , a long sleeved but thin cotton shirt was nice to pull on. Keeps you from feeling like you're literally cooking and nice when it gets cold at night. (Not to mention the malaria mosquitoes in India... hopefully not a problem at roo though.)
Agreed about sleeves! I carried a couple of super thin cardigans to toss over my sundresses and even a lightweight colorful scarf that I could drape over my shoulders to avoid the sun at times. They fit in my purse when I wasn't wearing them. You think long sleeves would be less comfortable, and during parts of the day they can be, but I worked in construction for 6 years in the Florida and Mobile areas, and on super hot days I still wore long sleeves often. If you see a crew of guys who work outside all day, you may notice that they often wear long sleeves year round. Once you start to sweat the moisture keeps you cool and you avoid direct sun exposure. There are so many cute Thin long drape cardigans in the stores right now. I also bought a thin pink plaid shirt at walmart on clearance for $5 recently that could be thrown on over a simple dress or skirt, so if you want to go the blouse route check out Walmart.
As for waiting til Sunday for shopping, that is a great tip! Just make sure that if there is a specific item you want it may not be worth waiting to see if prices drop. (many shirts, posters, vinyl etc are limited...I missed out on a cute official Roo shirt last year because I didn't snatch it up the first day) Most other clothing and purses and things will be easy to come by the whole weekend.

Hey ladies, I just got a discount code for 20% off at Gap/Old Navy/Banana Republic... I won't use it so you're welcome to it.
BRONGAP20 is the code and it expires tomorrow (4/27) so you'll need to use it fast. Not sure if its one use only or if you can use it more than once but I hope it helps someone!
I don't know if this has been discussed here but what do you ladies think of these pee funnels they make for girls? Good idea or just icky?
Pretty sure a few of the ladies here have 'em. I don't have one myself but I've thought about it a lot and would definitely like to get one someday. My only slight issue is that it seems like you'd have to put it back in your bag still slightly wet. Obviously I'd keep it in a plastic baggie or something, but it still seems a little gross. If I just had an easy way to rinse it off it'd be so much better! But somehow bringing my pee funnel to the troughs to rinse it off doesn't sound terribly fun to me, haha.

I'm still put off by that too. Especially if your bag is your Camelbak or whatnot. Might be worth it though. I'm not the most coordinated hover-er.

Yeah, I can't do the whole hover thing either. I'd rather take a minute to get the seat somewhat clean and be able to sit than try to balance myself in some ridiculous position and risk falling onto a disgusting seat!

The pstyle was brought up a few pages back by someone.. It has some of the best reviews online and comes in cute colors if you actually care about that. If I was carrying one I would also carry a little bit of toilet paper and maybe even some prepackaged disinfecting wipes if you are concerned about the icky factor. That way you can dry it, disinfect it, and toss it in a ziplock baggie. I've never used one, but I'm considering it. I also think I'm going to get a lugable loo. It isn't uncommon to get sick in all the heat, and I would rather be sick in the privacy and cleanliness of my own tent or privacy shelter than to get sick in a port o pot. The lugable loo is a 5 gal bucket with a toilet seat lid. You can use regular trash bags for liners and use a scoop of cat litter to prevent any other issues.
I'm actually pretty darn anti-hovering. You aren't going to catch anything from a dry seat (and very unlikely even from a wet one) and if everyone sits and/or cleans up after her or himself (hey guys reading this - clean up your dribbles!), no one will have to deal with someone else's pee.
What I do is bring a separate baggie full of antibacterial wipes. I'll pull one out along with a portion of toilet paper while I'm standing in line so I'm not fumbling around while inside the hot plastic box. Then I can quickly wipe things down with the antibacterial wipe and actually sit. I also double check to make sure the seat is dry before I exit.
Seriously - you want to be behind me in line. I'm also pretty good at predicting which porto will be the least disgusting.
Post by plasticpepper on Apr 28, 2011 17:28:02 GMT -5
Haha, same here - I always end up hoping a girl will go in after me because I know whichever porto I just left is about as good as it gets, at least as far as the seat is concerned. I wanna be like "okay, somebody who actually wants to sit down should go in here and take advantage of the cleanliness!"
And I too am very anti-hovering in non-Roo cases. I don't have any problem with people who do it at Roo, but imo you should still clean up after yourself. In non-Roo public restrooms I get pretty annoyed by hoverers - it's like, you think the seat is gross and it's somehow out of the question for your upper thighs to touch it, but YOU'RE THE ONE WHO JUST PEED ON THE SEAT! But at Roo the portas certainly do get way more disgusting than that, so I can't fault anyone for hovering there. Still just exacerbates the problem for everyone else though if your aim's not good! ;D
So this is my first post on here... but I just thought I'd share some thoughts.
1. I've never heard of this "pstyle" thing until I read this thread and I can't decide if I think its completely awesome or just weird. It seems like it could definitely be a lifesaver at roo though... For the past three years I've gone with with two guys, and I always get jealous of how quickly they can pop in and out of a port-a-potty. I think I may get one.
2. I'm sure this question has probably already been asked, but have any of you worn rubber rain boots/knee socks at Roo? It seems like a great way to avoid the ever-present mud, but I wasn't really sure how comfortable they are. Do your feet get too hot?
3. What do you ladies usually do for bras? The first day of my first Roo I wore a bra like I normally would, but it was so hot it became very uncomfortable. Ever since I've worn bikini tops under tank tops or sundresses, but by the end of the day the back of my neck will be killing me. I'm toting DD's, so I'm always looking for tips on comfort/support.
4. This is just a tip I thought I'd share... Every year for Bonnaroo I buy at least two pair of Tommy Hillfiger flip flops. They are extremely comfortable! They hold up pretty well also... I've only ever had to get rid of one pair. I love Tevas as well, but I like the TH flops a little better. They're cuter also - they're not like 90s style TH gear, they're actually really cute.
Think thats all I've got for now... Can't wait for Bonnaroo!!
Rain boots are typically as comfortable as they are expensive... A lot of the cheaper ones don't come in half sizes, so fit can be hard to achieve, and a lot of cheaper ones don't have as much padding and may be heavy and bulky.. Not to mention hot. That being said, there are good rain boots at any price point. My favorite are a cheap walmart pair that look like the hunter wellies. Some of the boots have enough room around the leg to flip down and keep a little bit more cool. If you have a pair or find a decent pair for not too much I would strongly consider bringing them even if you don't end up wearing them much. I can't predict the weather, but with all the storms we've been having I would be prepared for rain and mud even more than usual. (and even brush up on some lightning and tornado safety- I'm from Alabama originally, so I have weather on the brain)
I did the swimsuit tops last year, and even with my small B cups my neck was killing me because of the halter top. I have a cotton bra from VS that is shaped like a regular bra, but stretchy and thin like a sports bra and it came in handy at amusement parks last summer when I lived in Orlando. Some girls go braless, but I wouldn't recommend it in your case. There is no perfect solution. I worked in the hot Florida heat last year as an Asphalt Manager (think Florida heat on the already hot black top next to materials heated to 350+ deg), and discovered that the best bra for breathability and comfort was the VS tshirt bra in cotton. I even took the underwire out of a couple for days that were really hot. That way I had enough support, but it was comfortable enough I almost forgot I was wearing anything.
