Thanks! I'm probably just being overly paranoid, haha. If all else fails, I'm going to try making this:
For your family, you can create a flea and tick repellent to protect you while you are outdoors. Add a few drops of lemon, eucalyptus and pennyroyal essential oils to a spray bottle full of water. Spritz the clothes you are going to wear outside with the mixture.
I've never had need for bugspray. Yes, there are some spiders and crickets and ants (I bring a big can of Raid), but I've never had a problem with mosquitoes at Roo. And I'm a mosquito magnet.
What's the deal with spiders? I am terrified of them!

It seems that whatever they spray on the fields does not affect spider or ants.... I am also petrified of spiders but my camp mates and neighbours totally take care of any that come near me - yes I scream and people come running I've mostly seen smallish spiders but the 1st year I was there we had some really large ones on our tent - although we were closer to the woods in BFE that year. Other than those I have not seen any bugs at Roo.

Alright, everyone who was at the Sew In, I wanna see what you all made!
Also I was laying in bed last night thinking about tutus, and about that link someone posted to the tutu with pompoms sandwiched inbetween layers of tulle, and I realized you could sort of use that idea as another way to make a glowtu! You could make the tutu normally but just every so often use a strip that was doubled back on itself and sewn to make a little pocket of sorts...so basically a few of the tulle strips in the tutu would actually be two layers with a little opening on top and you could slide a glowstick right in. That way adding/replacing glowsticks would be super easy (although it might take a moment to find the right strip!) but when you didn't have glowsticks in there the tutu would be practically identical to a "normal" one so it would still look super cute and comfy.
(And yes, I know it was in the Sew In thread that we were initially talking about glowing tutus, but now that the Sew In is over I didn't want to keep bumping that thread by talking about unrelated things! )
^That's a great idea, pepper! You could color code to make it easier to find the pockets. Like a pink and greet tutu, with the green one's being for glowsticks (or something)
Mayo made some awesome Rootus! I just learned how to use my machine (thanks to zenfnp). I'm considering making a Rootu but I'm still unsure if I would wear it.

I LOVED Mayo's Rootu and will def be making one for myself now. I also really like Plastic Pepper's idea for the glow sticks. Nothing makes a Rootu better then a little Glow Fun
what if you just sewed in an EL wire? ...or would that weigh it down/probably not good in the daytime?
You definitely could do something with EL wire, but I would imagine it would be pretty pricey, plus you'd have to deal with the battery pack somehow. Personally if I make a glowtu of some sort I'm going to make sure it can function as a completely normal tutu so I can wear it non-glowy and be just as cute and comfy. But if you wanted to make one that was always going to be a glowtu, I'm sure there would be some cool things you could do with EL wire!
I think that the plasticpepper's idea for the glowsticks is a good one. Maybe even for ease of glowstick retrieval later, sew some strips of ribbon attached at the waist that could be tied to the end of the glowstick...then the glowsticks could be placed in the pockest.
For variety, the ribbons could be worn without glowsticks attached and then flipped to the outside of the tutu, maybe with bells attached?

Hmm... my idea was to attach the battery pack to the waistband (hiding it well without it bothering you) and then maybe have the EL wire at the end of the tutu (the hem, I guess you'd call it?), going around, but that might be complicated to make it look good. I was just trying to avoid a way of having to replace the glowsticks daily and avoid the glowstick waste. But true... glowsticks are cheap and easy to find. You could even link up the bracelet kind and make it work in several ways, I'm sure. Plus, the way I was thinking...I bet would still either need even more EL wire to add more colors and light within the tutu, which'd get expensive, and/or glowsticks still... *shrugs* It's the thought that counts. I tried, lol.
Hey all, I'm new, too! I've made a massive list of things to buy/bring just from reading back a dozen pages or so. My boyfriend has been going to Roo for several years and this is my first time going with him. So here's my question: Do you gals shower? The fella says he never does and that if I do so, it's $7 or something. I'm not worried about foregoing makeup and such, but I'm not a fan of being stinky and would like at least one rinse that weekend...Please share your wisdom!
Hola chica! Welcome to the GFT! I know Im a page behind now, but I take one shower on Saturday morning. Depending on what pod you are in, I think the lines can vary - but I do what was previously mentioned: I get up, drink a beer, and then go get in line... usually around 8:30am? the line will get longer as the morning goes on, but the longest I waited was maybe 15 min? I will also warn you that the smell of the sulfur water may entice you to leave the line and forget about the shower... But once you get in there, you DON'T CARE. You get that shampoo in your hair and it is like MAGIC. Totally worth the $7 for "half-way-through-Roo" shower. All the other days its babywipes, and goldbond powder.
mayo hears me yelling and comes to see what's going on...so by the time I get the door open she's standing right there and I think I just cried "CHRISTIIIIINE I HAD A PROBLEM."
Pepper - FANTASTIC DREAM! I am glad that I was your rescue after the toilet attacked you...really weird that Ghostface killa was playing.
And I love the idea of the pocket RootusTM. Im thinking that may be added to one of my current RootuTM creations.... Im thinking a pocket from waistband to the end of the tulle strip, then just plopping in a thin bracelet glowstick. They're lightweight. And you can just put them in there all day, then crack them at night. THEN you can sneak them in too. ...hmmm.... ideas ideas.

Yeah, I'm thinking cut a strip of tulle that's just shy of twice as long as the rest of your strips and the same width, then fold the two ends toward the middle and sew up both sides, leaving a small gap in the middle between the two pockets. Then you could knot it onto the elastic the same as all the other strips, using the gap in the middle that would only be one layer to knot it, and then both "tails" that hang down would have long skinny pockets for glowsticks.
I'd be willing to bet you could fill the pockets with uncracked glowsticks and waltz right in at night. Not sure about during the day, but then I also don't think I'd want to be wearing my tutu around in the heat of the day either. But at night...yep! Plus with the glowsticks incorporated into the tutu like that, if anyone did notice them it wouldn't look suspicious at all to pull an "oh, but I don't want to give up my tutu, I'll just run back and leave it in my tent!" ;D
i was suprised how few bugs i saw!!! they really spray the bejesus out of that place!!!
Very true...I kinda broke out on my ankles last year because of the crud they were spraying. I guess it's the lesser of two evils...
ALSO I read somewhere in this thread about some strapless bra discussion for those of us with big knockers. Most everyone suggested Lane Bryant, but it's a 40 dollar bra.
I know it sounds nuts, but honestly Wal Mart has THE BEST strapless bra I've ever bought. Got it pre-Bonnaroo last year and I wish I would've bought four of them!! It's got a lot of width for support--I was dying with the flimsy ones I got from VS, but the Wal Mart one is fantastic--and only ten dollars!!!
Here's a link to it on their website (but I saw it in the store today and purchased another one--they usually keep them in stock around here)
ALSO for those of you ladies living in the South, there's a store called Shoe Station that has a HUGE selection of Tevas, Sanuks, Yellowbox, Crocs, Kavu purses (some VERY cheap), etc. Great place to grab some necessities!

^^^ Thanks for this. I recently bought a strapless bra to go under a new sundress but I don't have much confidence that it is going to keep my 34Ds in place..... I may check out the walmart one!
The Rootus are so cute! How do you make them? Sorry if this has already been discussed, I couldn't find anything about how to actually make them. I would definitely rock one at Roo!

My VS strapless bra was the worst strapless bra I ever bought. So glad I spent $50 on it. I found one at Target or Walmart (don't remember which) that was a lot more supportive. My aunt raves about this strapless bandeau one she has. I'll have to ask her where she got it.

i have found that the bandau bras work much better than the strapless bras. i think its because it has an entire band that goes around the back and it stays up better. i get the kind with the entire bra cup in it with padding and that also helps it to stay up. im sorta large at the top as i think most of the girls on here are based upon other posts and i find that the padding helps keep the bra in place and keeps it from showing through
i bought two bandaus with bra cups in it from all places - forever 21 - they stayed up fairly well and they are pretty enough and thick enough to show if you want to. you could even wear them by themselves as they are thick enough. i like them because if they show then its ok. i often wear them under tanks or under jackets or with low cut tops. they work MUCH better than say.....strapless swim suit tops - which i never have luck with at all
the bandaus without cups in them will fit tighter and maybe stay up for that reason however you will show right through them. once you get them on they are sheer. you likely would nto want to wear one by itself and you wuold still show through most shirts with one of those on IMHO
heres a picture of one like the one i got at forever21 but i only paid 7.99 for mine. if you get these bras done wash them or dry them in a machine - hand wash. the machine will mess up the padding and will break down the fibers that make it stay u p
the ones i got were like the ones three down. you can see theres an entire cup there.

Even the Forever 21 sports bras are nice! I really like them. Just beware, anyone buying from F21, of their sizing. Everything is so inconsistent. I have some stuff in XS/S an then bought a top a few years back and I had to buy it in large, hahaha.
The Rootus are so cute! How do you make them? Sorry if this has already been discussed, I couldn't find anything about how to actually make them. I would definitely rock one at Roo!
We were talking tutus/Rootus a lot on the thread for the Sew In, so that's why the discussion here in the GFT probably sort of sprang out of nowhere. Anyway, I'll quote what I said in the other thread as far as how to make them. (Sorry, this is gonna be long...)
All you need is elastic and a TON of tulle. The elastic in mine is an inch wide and it seems pretty perfect. Wrap the elastic around your waist (wherever you want it to sit) and cut it and sew the ends together. Since it's stretchy you want to make sure it's tight enough to have to stretch a teeny bit when you put it on so it will fit snugly. As for sewing it together, I just did it by hand and just went back and forth across the elastic several times because I wanted to make sure it was nice and secure. The elastic will be covered in tulle anyway so it does not matter in the slightest if it's messy.
Then you cut the tulle into strips. I actually got big spools of tulle which were INCREDIMAZING because I just had to cut it into strips of the right length, but you could easily buy yardage and cut it into strips too. Whatever you buy, look for fairly soft stuff - the bigger the holes in the netting are the stiffer it's probably going to be...and I'd imagine that really big, stiff netting would NOT be too comfy against your skin. My strips are around 6 inches wide and probably around 2.5 feet long.
Then all you have to do is knot the strips around the elastic using larks head knots. Like this:
(You just fold the strip of tulle in half and lie it across the elastic so there's a loop on one side and two long tails on the other and then pull the tails through the loop.)
And...keep tying on tulle until you have a tutu! I think mine has around 85 strips on it. Something like that. I used three colors of tulle for mine - pink, blue, and purple - so I just rotated through the colors two strips at a time. Like pink pink blue blue purple purple pink pink blue blue purple purple. If you want your colors to be sort of distinct I recommend doing something like that - if you want actually stripes you could do more than two at a time, or if you want it to be really mottled and let the colors sort of mix you could just do one at a time. Be aware that tulle is really sheer and it takes a lot to really build up colors, so if you get ten different colors it might end up looking a bit muddy when colors like red and green start "mixing."
All of that is SUPER flexible. You could cut the strips to practically any width and they'd work, but I think wider is better - you could easily go wider than my 6 inches if you wanted, but if you went too much narrower you would just end up making more work for yourself because you'd need more strips. And obviously the length of your strips just affects how long the tutu ends up - since you're doubling the strips in order to knot them on you want then a little more than twice the length you want your tutu to end up. You could also lay 2 or more strips on top of each other and knot them all on at once and see what that looked like, or try to concoct some sort of double-layered tutu if you wanted one color on top of another or whatever.
The more strips you can cram onto the elastic the fuller the tutu will be. Mine is full enough to be fairly poofy, and also full enough that at Roo I'd be totally fine with wearing it with just undies or bathing suit bottoms underneath it - but that is partially because at Roo I don't really care who sees my undies.
That's about all I can think of but let me know if you girls have any more questions. It's really, really simple and easy to do, it's just a bit time consuming.
Here's what mine looks like!
(although it's a lot more crinkly now after being stuffed in my closet, not to mention crammed unceremoniously into my duffle bag for two Bonnaroos!)
They're super easy to do, and the process is so simple that it's really easy to alter it if you want to add anything else like ribbon or bells or whatever. Or glowsticks! ;D
I keep meaning to take a new picture of mine for you all because I love how it looks all crinkly, but I am gross and in sweatpants right now so it'll have to wait until a time when I am cuter.
