Is tourism to a state not a sign that people want to go there? Like yeah Nebraska probably doesn't have a ton of tourism. All the good states, california, colorado, florida, etc have tons of tourism.

I lived in Hawaii for 2 months due to the recent Maui wildfires and I gotta say it sucks to live on a island and most ppl live in poverty from what I seen.
great place to vacation and I felt a little guilty about being a tourist on my days off.
Even as a non white person I felt like a colonizer durring those days but also I think it's good that they get govt funding rather then being on there own bc other pacific island nations are worse off from what I can tell but I think the U.S should do more in regards to social safety nets.

Depends on how you look at it. Tourism itself is not a terrible thing but way oversaturated tourism to the point that it is exploitive like Hawaii or Venice or Phuket or other similar places will very much ruin the experience. I'm also from a town that has been run into the ground by tourism so I have a bias.
I also probably wouldn't rate Nebraska higher than Hawaii.

Yea I think people just like anywhere with a beach. MB is terrible but people definitely love going there.

Those places rely on tourism to survive. If tourists stopped going to hawaii their economy would collapse.
I think these are the states that are worse than Hawaii without debate: Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Idaho, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, DC, Virginia, New Jersey, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine.
There are also a bunch more that are worse but I would at least entertain arguments for being better
NOW you are cooking. Your other points were steering this survivor straight into the ground.
Curious though what are you, and everyone else, weighing most heavily when it comes to determining how good a state is? As an avid hiker and traveler, natural beauty and scenery is pretty big but so is the state of the tourism industry and affordability. Politics is also a pretty big one. Infrastructure. Etc. Lots of things to weigh.
I’m doing some mix of:
1. How would I like living there? 2. How would I like Visiting there? 3. How much impact does this state have on… culture idk

Not saying it wouldn't, but as an introvert who isn't from there I don't like the experience that it offers to lower-middle class outsiders like myself. I think most local Hawaiians would consider me "part of the problem", and I don’t like to be a problem. That's all. I also think there is more to consider than just how popular a place is. Florida is also wildly popular but sucks for a number of reasons.

Florida is still way better than a majority of US states.

It is the way I’m looking at it too. Miami, Orlando, Tampa are fun places with lots to do. Yea their politics suck but is it worse than where I live? Probably not.

Out of general curiousity would Hawaii be your number 1? If not, what would be?
Hawaii is the most expensive state in the country for just about everything. No one can afford to live there and now they are even putting barriers in place to limit tourism because of how out of control it has gotten. And Tulsi Gabbard ew. Also ever been to Honolulu? Sucks. Some nice beaches sure but you can find much nicer and cheaper beaches in other parts of the world and much more pristine and cleaner beaches in other parts of the continental U.S.. I'm going like 12 or 13 or something.
Who hurt you in Hawaii?
Pretty tough finding nicer and much more pristine beaches in other parts of the continental U.S.

Hawaii is easily #1 for me. It’s far away, sure, but there’s a good chance many of us will want to get as far away as possible from this place in a few months. Sure, it’s expensive, but all the good states are expensive.
It’s the most beautiful state, and it’s not even close. It smells good. The seafood is fresh everywhere. Same with the fruit. The weather is perfect. THEY HAVE VOLCANOES!!! And SPAM. Waikiki Beach is small and crowded and easily skippable, but so many of the other beaches are perfect. Lomi Lomi. Kalua pig. Macadamia nuts. An ABC store on every corner! (Not sure if this is still the case. I haven’t been there in almost 20 years.) Amazing snorkeling. LOST! Jurassic Park! Rainforests! The clearest, starriest skies I’ve even seen in my life.
I can’t wait to go back. It’s just so far away and expensive.

Florida Man [tm] agrees with this. We have the most springs on the planet. Many of the beaches rule. Specifically I like all of 30-A and Cocoa best. Politics sucks but otherwise I like it.

Maine and New Mexico are both awesome but I know that’s not really the point here.
My off the cuff bottom 5 are Mississippi, Alabama, Kansas, Oklahoma and North Dakota. Iowa is in the running too. Louisiana is bottom 20 but they invented multiple cuisines (Cajun, Creole, Cane River, etc.) and two types of music. The north half of the state is evangelized and has tons of assholes making them look like most of the south.
Off the cuff Top 5 would be out of Colorado, Hawai’i, California, Oregon, Washington, North Carolina, Alaska (so massive but it will be underrated), Florida New York, and the 6 New England states.

they're cool, I like santa fe and taos. just not as cool as hawaii
Portland and Acadia alone make Maine a pretty formidable contender for a high placement
The entire Maine coastline is gorgeous, and the most touristy area, Bar Harbor, I think is a good example of a touristy area that isn't oversaturated to the point that it is gross or annoying. I thruhiked the AT many years ago and spending the last month of that in Maine and getting to summit Katahdin in Baxter State Park in the fall is just about as close to a fairy tale that you can get.
