Hawaii is the most expensive state in the country for just about everything. No one can afford to live there and now they are even putting barriers in place to limit tourism because of how out of control it has gotten. And Tulsi Gabbard ew. Also ever been to Honolulu? Sucks. Some nice beaches sure but you can find much nicer and cheaper beaches in other parts of the world and much more pristine and cleaner beaches in other parts of the continental U.S.. I'm going like 12 or 13 or something.
Not sure how to rank Hawaii, beautiful state but not one i would ever visit considering the tourism instrustry displaced so many natives and a lot of Hawaiians say not to even travel there. cant really vote for it the same way as other states given its unique context
I voted #2. It's probably the most beautiful of all the states. I'm sure there are plenty of issues with it, but I don't go there so it's not my problem.
What states would be good for number 1? My first thought was Vermont or Colorado but please educate me.
Oregon or GTFO
Oregon is pretty cool, probably my least favorite of the three states when I hiked the PCT though, but that is for very specific reasons that I wouldn't expect this survivor to take into consideration. Would rank considerably higher than Hawaii.

i’m biased but i truly think for qol it’s Massachusetts, best health care, best schools, four seasons, great restaurants/food, good nature/trails, on the water, amazing for LGBTQ+ rights, abortion codified into state constitution, legal weed, decent entertainment options and live venues. Main flaws are lack of diversity, thinly veiled racism among many of the older people here, shitty roads, public transit not doing well, and cost of living
other than MA, I think the only other real contenders would be California, New York, Vermont, and Maine
There are going to be plenty of other states with the same issues as Hawaii with way less upside. Putting it in the bottom half is insane.
The problem I have though is that these issues are at their apex in Hawaii. Nowhere in the States is less affordable, not even California. Nowhere in the States is tourism less gross and oversaturated. And the local vs outsider mentality is quite heightened compared to other States. Its beauty earns it a lot of points, yes. I think upper half of bottom 10 is appropriate, but I guess since it's the first round and we have all of the South still left on the table you could rank it higher if you feel so compelled.

I'm on 6. People consider it a treat just to go there, I get jealous when I know someone is going there. They have the best food trucks as far as I can tell. I dont even know if it's real Hawaiian food but its the cuisine you're looking for when you're at a loss for what you want to eat. Could be an argument for #1 but idk if I'd care to live in a place so detached. I'd be worried there aren't enough people that hate life and complain all the time. I don't know if they have internet there. I wouldn't want to live in paradise.
They don't even have any sports teams to get excited about.
NOW you are cooking. Your other points were steering this survivor straight into the ground.
Curious though what are you, and everyone else, weighing most heavily when it comes to determining how good a state is? As an avid hiker and traveler, natural beauty and scenery is pretty big but so is the state of the tourism industry and affordability. Politics is also a pretty big one. Infrastructure. Etc. Lots of things to weigh.

I found that when I started thinking about it I was putting weather first. So I put a lot of southern states at the top despite the politics. Also I’ve learned over the years that politics are bad everywhere. I would rather be in a place with great weather and in cities that have lots of fun things to do.

Oregon is probably on the short list too.
Let's just pretend everything east of Bend doesn't exist though.

Hawaii has basically perfect weather and is one of the most liberal states.

I have it at 6 right now. Being so expensive and not close to anything else is counting against it.

i was lucky enough to grow up like 45 minutes from the beach, i have no doubt hawaii is amazing and beautiful but it takes so long to get there and so expensive. why go through all that trouble when you can just drive to gulf shores and steal beers from people's ice chests they leave outside their condos, or go to winn dixie and shoplift a bottle of maddog 20/20? then head to waffle house and play spice girls "wannabe" over and over again on the jukebox while you absolutely house a pecan waffle and hash browns and enjoy a camel light after your meal. it's a perfect day.

6 might be more fair on second thought. If I were to rank it amongst all 50 states, I wouldn't put it on the top half. But since this is blind survivor and only the first round and there is no shortage of shitty states in this country, there is just as much of a chance that more of those shitty states will appear later on than any of the better ones. I don't want to get stuck having to rank West Virginia higher than Hawaii.

bottom half of the country is actually insane lol
I've been to Hawaii and I think it's way overrated so nah not in my opinion.
