michael jordan played 182 games with the wizards at age 38 and 39 and the team finished 37-51 and 10th in the east in each of those seasons, missing the playoffs both years
tom brady played 126 games from the age of 38 on, won an MVP, was top 2 in MVP 3 other times (and one of those he lost to Aaron Rodgers for ??? reasons), his team was 91-35, and he won 3 Super Bowls.
brady made the playoffs 20 times in 21 full seasons; the one season that he played where they missed the playoffs, they were still 9-7.
but most importantly, brady beats jordan in one key statistic:

that depends on the magnitude of their achievements, since we are looking at who had the most impressive career; most pro golfers don't do shit, relatively speaking, after the age of 40, just like any other sport, because the forces exerted by and on a professional golfer are unnatural and violent
jack nicklaus' win at the 1986 masters, at the age of 46 and change, is one of the single greatest athletic achievements in the last 50 years, period. he probably should have been in this competition over tiger on the merit of that win alone.
so yeah, longevity matters, and it should play a larger role in most peoples' voting habits than it does. someone who performs at an extremely high level for an extended period of time is inherently impressive, which is what the question is asking us.
someone taking half their 30s off because they don't have the competitive fire or mentality to keep doing it should be demerited accordingly, even if they were, to that point, the greatest player to play that sport.
jordan should've gone before Lebron anyway because AS. STATED.
LeBron is gonna hit 40 with gas in the tank after being the best player in the world for 20 years.
Jordan retired for the second time when he was 34, took three years off and came back and was a fuckin' shell of himself for the Wizards. To me that--at this point anyway--seals the deal on the MJ/LeBron argument.
And of these five Serena and Brady deserve to go out before him anyway.

Lebron James only 6th most impressive career of all time lol.
Not that he needed to be in this poll, but Gore Sr had a hell of a career. He went from somebody people were everyone expected to have a short career due to multiple ACL tears in college to an all-time durable back.
Lebron's career is really just the sports version of RHCP. Around forever and continues to rack up the #s, and might still headline a Bonnaroo, but just not the best.

Lebron at 40 is definitely better than Jordan at 40. the debate is not close to that simple though. Jordan's wizards numbers were actually really good anyway considering he was 38+ and hadn't played basketball for three years.

why not?
To me he has the longevity argument and that's it. Jordan over LeBron is an easy call for me.
Brady is an interesting case. For years I would have said he was overrated and gave Belichick more of the credit. But going to a super mid Bucs team and winning another super bowl is still unfathomable to me.
Would LeBron be willing to torpedo his marriage for a comeback? I'm not sure.
Probably see ya Serena by the am. I don’t watch or give a fuck about tennis. But I do respect its stars. She is up with the all time goats from all the eras and because she’s the most modern goat would probably kick all their asses. I don’t know where I’m going tomorrow if this holds. For shit I pay the most attention to, Brady vs MJ would be my final 2. Messi is awesome and so is Gretzky. I watch hockey the least. I don’t hate it or anything but I might watch a Stanley cup game or olyimpic medal round. But he reenergized American hockey. I’m probably voting for him but it would be with a salute.
