I'm voting Simone here. While I don't shame her for it at all, the 2021 Olympics is noteworthy when splitting hairs among the best 12 athletes of all time. It feels similar to Lebron's performance against the Mavs in 2011, except in gymnastics you only get 1/4 of the opportunities to succeed at the very highest level as you do in basketball.
I barely follow this shit, obviously. But I also found it weird that people told me her most dominant area of expertise was floor and she lost that this year while in her prime.
Finally, and most importantly, gymnastics is the only sport remaining that has judges and where the athletes choose songs and shit that are a part of their routine / performance. Boxing also has judges. At the very least, there is a way to objectively win in that sport without relying on opinion.
I am no huge fan of Gretzky, but he won MVP eight years in a row. Of the 61 NHL records he held at the time of his retirement in 1999, he still holds 56 of those and gained an additional one post retirement. Not saying he needs to win, but those are some impressive numbers.

think that the stat inflation/lack of player quality of the MLB segregation era stats is pretty well known, but I think the lack of Soviet and Soviet satellite state players in the NHL goes a bit unreported. After the last year of that 8 year run, the Soviet block players were allowed to come to the NHL and it pretty drastically changed the game and within 10 years there were 4 MVP trophies won by players who otherwise would not have been allowed to play in the NHL at the time of Gretzky (Federov, Jagr, Hasek)

To the point that some announcers literally forget that he holds them when they are broken lol

The difference is that Soviet players still matched up against NHLers in international play on a far greater scale than MLBers matched up with Negro Leaguers on say, a barnstorming tour.
And Gretzky DID play against those guys in the NHL. It's not like Gretzky just up and quit in his prime (unlike some other people on this list I can name.)
He played for another 10 years, notching another MVP trophy and a couple more top-5 finishes.
And as Dave stated, he still holds 56 records 25 years after his retirement. If people are going to knock Phelps for losing his world records, gotta give the same credit to Gretzky for keeping them.
