I'm 33 and usually only average 10-15 shows a year, the vast majority are at least an hour and a half drive to get to so Roo and a few smaller fests help fill the gap in acts I wouldn't otherwise get the chance to see.

My partner can no longer do the heat in TN and the VIP options are too expensive considering the lineup hasn’t been great in awhile.

My partner can no longer do the heat in TN and the VIP options are too expensive considering the lineup hasn’t been great in awhile.

oh wow, that's crazy. tough for people who have to have butter on everything. maybe in tent only they'll have some sort of butter chilling station where you can store your butter when not in use. might be a good compromise.

lol. It’s disturbing as most of John Waters’ early movies were. That one was based on filth, and they give you filth. There’s a bunch more in that series - Desperate Living, Female Troubles and Multiple Maniacs. He finally got mainstream with Polyester, Cry Baby, Hairspray and then eventually cult classic Serial Mom.

The chicken sex and the butthole dance are seared into my brain. Not a good movie, but pretty damn memorable.
I must have forgotten about the chicken part which is probably for the better. Bird is the Word, defiling Connie and Raymond Marvel's house and bed, cannibalizing the police officer at the party, Babs Johnson's own little oven for holding the meat she stole at the grocery, eating dogshit to how much is that little doggy in the window. There's a lot of bad can't-unsee memories from that movie which is going to happen when the protagonists and antagonists battle over who are the filthiest humans alive. Divine/Babs Johnson was the filthiest.

Cincinnasti's Roo 2024 Recap

Let me start by saying that I thought this was maybe going to be my last Roo for a little while. I want to get back to Electric Forest, and there are some new fests I'd like to try out, etc. But I'll spoil my recap early by asserting that I absolutely will be back to Bonnaroo next year. It's just too crucial a part of my year, and it's becoming even more important as a tradition in my life and the lives of some of those closest to me as time goes on.
This is the second year in a row where my gang (including folks from Toronto, Cincy, New Orleans) met up at a bare bones airbnb in Nasvhille on Tuesday night. This works really well and we'll likely continue to do it.
We made it into Roo at about 11 with no wait. For the first time I saw a dog in the security line but we avoided that line and it was probably a bomb dog anyway. I've been wanting to be camped in Plaza 7 for a while and we got lucky and were about L23, right down the road from the Grove. I could be camped here every year. It was perfect. Additionally I'm really happy with our camp set up at this point in my festival life. We have a "Free Stuff" table that we fill with vitamins, sunscreen, tampons, candy, gum, earplugs, etc. And we have a lot of nice convos with people as they stop by. Our neighbors were mostly introverted by we had a funny inside joke with them that was a repeated nice moment throughout the weekend. Checked out Pocket at WITW to show it off to newbies.
Wednesday night was a party as always, and even tho we only got 30 mins of T3ddy F1a1r dj set bc of a generator issue, it was a blast to see everyone and hang out for a few hours. Mr.BelgianAmbers flirted with my friends, I flirted with Jim Watson 's friend, a really great time all around. Also met 𝕤𝕨𝕖𝕖𝕥 𝕔𝕒𝕣𝕠𝕝𝕚𝕟𝕒 for the first time! Made it to WITW for AEON:Mode, Blanke's dnb side project, and that was fire. Only other set I saw in WITW this year. Crashed in the Grove at a reasonable hour, and then woke up and went back to camp a few hours later to sleep some more.
Thursday I stumbled into Chapel Hart at galactic Giddy up and it was really fun. Saw Tony and T3ddy F1a1r for a bit and then went to camp to rest up. When I got back to camp the gang was making little creatures out of pipe cleaners and doing whippets, just truly incredible camp activity vibes. Stopped over at the theAmberRhino RV and wow that AC is next level in heat like that. Next it was time for Say She She and while it wasn't quite the full inforoo meetup set I wanted it to be (that tent was pretty packed!) it was still an amazing time. I beat the shit out of snowmansnowman at the ferris wheel fistfight that had a strong showing of 7 inforoosters. Definitely worth it for the bit although there was a 3post1jack1 's face sized hole in my heart. Swung by Sid Sriramand it was alright, then went to Happy Landing which was fire. Just a really solid high energy alt country set. Looking forward to seeing where those kids go. Nation of Language was ok and I left after 20 to post up for Pretty Lights set 1, my first every PL show. I absolutely get they hype. It's just a really unique show. It didn't turn me into a super fan or anything but I had a kick ass time dancing with my crew. Bopped around to a few sets and went back to camp before GWAR which had a really silly pit (in which I ran into Tony , my inforoo mosh buddy, and death crab for the only time all weekend. We shared a pretty hilarious "ah!!! HI!!!" *smash crash mosh see you never*). Musically it was pretty trash but I had fun. I'm extremely grateful to Jake Jortles for pushing Roisin so hard because holy shit the second half of her set was such a trip. Really interesting and fun set. Scarier than anything at GWAR by a mile. IYKYK. The other half of camp was drunk when we got back which was funny and then we all went to sleep.
Friday kicked off with a small little inforoo brunch. We had a nice mix of old and new inforoosters, and I got to meet Farrisbueller and Satoshi Bonnamoto for the first time (I think?). Thanks again for hosting snowman ! Next I went into Centeroo because Bonny Light Horseman was starting, and also my ex girlfriend's best friends (whom I love) were getting married at the House of Matroomony. I managed to catch my fav BLH song and a few others and make it just in time to see Disco Lines marry my pals. For relational context I would not have been invited an IRL wedding if they had one but I wanted to watch from the back and take some videos they could have for posterity. It was a really nice way to kick off the day. Made it back for the last few of BLH and ran into Ambassador Of Fun rockin the red's hat. The heat was obviously fucking brutal by now, but that didn't stop me from Friday being my highest ever # of sets day at a Bonnaroo. I did an afternoon of set splitting that went something like Japanese House > Mon Rovia > Mike. > Faye Webster (!!!) > Grouplove > Houseplant > Lizzy McAlpine. Just a lot of really nice music except for Mike. My next full set of the day was TV Girl which is in my top 3 for the week. I was on a little, ya know whatever, and wow I was just completely transported for this set. They played my favs and some great new stuff. Perfectly filled tent with space to dance. Next I found my buddy at Crank Bong and they played a huge sounding set from the What. If I would have chosen my substances/timing differently, they could easily have made top 5 sets. Up next was my most anticipated set, ISOXO and it truly did not disappoint. About 2 songs, the pit opened up, and we all had an amazing time moshing and dancing to the filthiest trap drops. I have to emphasize how good The Other is when you're right up close. Hugely euphoric set. Met back up with the crew for Posty and had a great time. Tried to get really close and it was impossible but was up pretty far when MF Billy Strings came out! Really cool moment that reminds you why Roo has the reputation it does. I saw at least 10 minutes of every single late night act. I could tell that each of them was for someone but none of them was for me, which is ok. So many randos said that TPain was their fav set of the weekend, which really made me wish I hadn't been a good little Christian boy in 2007. I will say I was impressed with SVDDEN DEATH - he has such a reputation for having filthy drops and fucked up imagery and it really did not disappoint for the 15 or so drops I was there for. Seven Lions was so goofy and not at all how I remembered him from his closing set at Forest 2019. Called it a fairly early night but still only got around 4 hours of sleep before kicking off...
Saturday! with the Roo Run 5K! Always brutal to wake up for, always soooo worth it. Got a pretty good time this year! Afterwards the gang and I went into centeroo to cool off in the fountain. I gotta say, Roo Run in 90 degrees -> Centeroo fountain is top 10 sensory experiences I've ever had. I stuck around in Centeroo 'til Trousdale who were EVERYTHING I wanted them to be. Ugh. Tears in my eyes at a few of the harmony moments. Wisely bought tickets to see them in Cleveland next week so I'm looking forward to a full set not in oppressive heat. I checked out Infinity Song who I expected to like a lot but just didn't get it. Went back to camp and was late for Jon Batiste which put me in a bad mood for most of his set unfortunately. I liked what he was doin I just wish he would have played more of his songs I guess? Renee Rapp was a perfect little pop set, nothing crazy but it was cool to be right next to Brittany Howard in the pit. Cage the Elephant was definitely a stand out set. We were way at the back of the what and it sounded great. A dear friend of mine who has moved around a lot and is in Knoxville right now came in for the day and we got to reunite while singing all the songs we loved. It's Roo tradition that my gang picks a night to trip and so we all cheers'd and took our tabs halfway through the set. It's earnest and cringe and I love it and it's just a really sweet moment every year. It was starting to kick in a little as we walked by The Garden. I was excited for them, but I didn't expect to be so pulled in. Most of the gang went elsewhere while my friend and I ran into the pit. It was a real "the kids are alright" moment. Punk is truly alive. It was like every genre of pit at once. A circle pit the entire time. People skanking and dancing. Push pit in the middle. Just a bunch of freaks moving their bodies (including Tony ). It was so sick. The Garden told us that everyone at the show was cursed. They were like "yeah so... sorry about that. Good luck." It was a euphoric celebration of cross genre punk goodness and my overall set of the weekend. I stumbled out giggling and sweating. We met at the back of RHCP and we literally couldn't take it seriously. I'm not trying to be a dick but we were all just laughing. They sounded like an RHCP cover band or something - even with JOhN FruiSCANTE!!! So we went back to camp and had a silly trippy time putting all of our little pipe cleaner creatures in the Grove. We went back into Centeroo and split up, some going to Idles, the rest of us to hover around the outside of Parcels which my buddy called "Obscenely pleasant." I have to agree. We must have gone back to camp one more time (tower entrance is so nice), because we got stuck in the line coming in for PL sunrise. And then it was time for that last late night set. Y'all know that feeling. Long night of bein' on something silly. Last really hard push of Bonnaroo. Body absolutely knackered. Mind in space. I felt so much love for the experience of Bonnaroo as a whole. It's a really really special week for me. A true holiday in the "holy day" sense. It's just the Right thing for me. When I'm there, it's easy to feel that at the gut level - similar to the feeling people have been talking about here lately. The highs aren't so high, but it's a much deeper contentment and satisfaction. It makes me feel like I know myself well and I'm good at giving myself what I need. Here's me feeling all of that. We trudged out of Centeroo and made it to the Grove where we slept for a few hours. It was real cute.
Sunday at Roo is like the last semester of high school. You're so fucking sick of it but you know that it's all gonna be over soon so you have to just absorb it all. And you better say some good goodbyes. Maybe drink a little too much. Our crew started to get smaller as our Nola friend left early to make it home at a reasonable hour. Then I went to the T3ddy F1a1r / trick or trant / Tony / cumaroo camp to bid adieu - Say those goodbyes!! Anyway, if I have a heat beating tip, it's that you should go into Centeroo early. Might sound counterintuitive, but there's a huge shade and misting tent, fountain, cooled vendor areas, etc - and none of them are crowded when it's early and hot. It was soooo much cooler than my camp. I was also cooled down by FINALLY riding the BIG ASS WATER SLIDE. My second time down I asked the guy the best way to go. He said "head first, without a doubt." I can't explain how but I have never hit and will never again hit a water slide so perfectly. I landed headfirst right on the slope for max speed and it felt sick as fuck I'm not ashamed to say it. Next was Chappell and I'm sure you know everything you want to about that already. I have a slight stick up my ass about her because I've been jamming Pink Pony club since early '21, but I really am glad she's getting her flowers and I'll correct a bitch for saying she's an industry plant any time I hear it. Paul McDonald was playing some nasty blues rock (not usually my thing) at the small stage at Planet Roo and it was really good. Try to catch him in a club if you can. Got to share some facetime with Wrexesteban at BBNG. I'm sure y'all know this already but running into esteban at a fest is just such a pleasant experience. Happy to know ya dude! I also got to say hi/bye to sweetie heart Jim Watson who I should have kissed on the mouth. The lack of sleep caught up with me and I took a nap in the shade tent with Four Tet in the background until the storm commotion woke me up. Went back to camp until MTS who was easily in my top 5 for the weekend. Woman can PERFORM. Truly a dance party and the sunset was beautiful. A few of us went to the Who for Wolves of Glendale and it was such a good decision. Hilarious set, great music, really good vibes to end the weekend. They were 5 minutes over time and were almost done with their last song and the sound guys cut them off!! it was crazy. But they came out and we all high fived them and stuff. Seriously go look these guys up. We made it to the What field for Fred Again.. and the beginning of his set was really Euphoric. And then, just as it was getting going... I laid down. I'm one of the higher energy members of my croo and it really all hit me then. As my friends danced around me, I listened to Fred Again's admittedly very good set as I sat on the edge of sleep (this is also why I never came to find you Jaz ! Rip, miss you). I got up and danced hard for the last song, and then Bonnaroo 2024 was over. As the masses left the What field I had that feeling again. It's just the right place for me.
I'd like to thank everyone who made this Roo special - sorry if I saw you and forgot to tag you! A few wrap up thoughts:
Negatives: - The non pedestrian traffic in outeroo is seriously out of control. My friend would have gotten whacked by a pedi cab had she not turned around and moved at the very last second. It's approaching vibe killing levels. - The heat was obviously brutal but it did make us resourceful - This is at least partially a positive but Roo pushed me over the edge on resting my knee after 4 months of on and off pain. It got really bad. Gonna get a brace for running and stuff. I'm not 20 and I need to take care of my body.
Positives: - Plaza 7. It was my first time camped there and it's by far my favorite spot ever. Very short walk to the tower entrance. Having the Grove nearby during the heat this year was invaluable. - Roo is a pretty well oiled machine. I'm not saying there are no hiccups but the horror stories you see on the subreddit are usually user error lol

The amount of fuckers driving carts with nobody or no objects in them. I was actually getting something equivalent to road rage. Shouting stuff like "YEP!! hope you are going to save a life right now." Wife was embarrassed about how weak and emotionally unstable this was making me. I just really like getting angry over stupid shit sometimes. Im sure 90% of the carts had solid reasoning for being there.
I'm not complaining about pedicabs. They saved my ass on multiple occasions, though they aren't cheap. I don't ever fuck with lines or jamtrack so it's foot or bike cab. I will admit to wondering multiple times how more people don't get run over because motherfuckers half the time are paying no attention while walking.
Capital Cincy that was awesome. I was mostly over the blues and lack of stimulation, but you brought me back to the festival. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your review, and you know I love you too man.
