I still have such conflicting thoughts about this lineup.
On one hand, they did a lot of things that I was genuinely surprised by or at least find cool. They booked six hours of Pretty Lights, opened up the main stage on Thurs for the first time and gave them a sunrise set the other time. They made Fred Again, a very in the moment artist an exclusive booking in North America. They gave us the best Wednesday schedule of activities yet, the best Thursday lineup since 2013. The best Sunday lineup since 2013 (maybe 2016). The best Friday + Saturday combo of late night options since 2015 when it was EWF / RTJ / Flying Lotus on Friday then Slayer / D'Angelo on Staurday.... with a Long TMV set Friday and 1.5 hours of Parcels + Idles then Pretty Lights Sunrise on Sat. Almost every Roo since 2015 has had at least one complete snoozer late night. During the 2017-18 era, I truly thought Roo would never book acts like the following ever again: Four Tet, Roisin Murphy, Yves Tumor, Armand Hammer, MIKE, Irreversible Entanglements, Ethel Cain, DOMBRANCE. Then they brought in more good stuff that I never thought they'd get away from: badbadnotgood, greensky bluegrass, JRAD, Geese, BigX, Key Glock, Chase & Status, Isbell, Carl Rae Jepsen, Brittany Howard, Idles, Mdou Moctar. They booked a silly / fun act each day except for Sunday: Gwar, T-Pain, Sean Paul.
But on the other hand, the top 16 of this lineup, and the schedule, are both all-time bad. That saturday top 6... RHCP, Cage, Melanie, Cigs, Diplo, Batiste = 0/6. Not a hint of interest. Friday competes. JRAD is good but that being #5 is a sign of how little resources they had... I guess? They are coming off a sellout year. Who would have batted an eye if they were 9th on their day? Maggie Rogers is weak af as a number 2.
And then the schedule for Friday and Saturday really needed to be perfect for those days to be great, which they could have been. The thing about 17 and 18 is that they made shitty lineups passable.. kinda (sat 17 was cheeks).. by scheduling it perfectly.
This Friday should have been able to go: MIKE > Mdou Moctar > Interpol (main stage to get it earlier and out of conflicts) > Thundercat > Key Glock / Shy FX > Khraungbin > ISOxo > JRAD / Dombrance During Post Malone > TMV / T Pain
Saturday really just needed to swap Idles and the EMO Superjam or the Garden. Or put Parcels and Idles back to back in the same tent leading into Pretty Lights. Sunday just needed to swap Four Tet and Galantis. It's hard to complain about Sunday since I do want to see 14 shows and I know only 6-7 is realistic.
I still think this is better than 17, 18, and 22. The undercard is way better than last year but more importantly last year had bigger acts that I truly gave a shit about. It's mid overall, but I've made myself excited for every day, so I'm starting to ramp up the hype machine. 2 weeks out baby!

i think what bonnaroo failed to do is schedule good lanes. past lineups you look at the schedule and find an easy path. this year it's harder to piece together the days in that way? at least for me. but all in all, i'm with you, the undercards and cool bookings are lit, and the big acts are lacking. it's gonna be a busy 5 days!

this is a great analysis.
for me the primary thing is the weak top 6. agree there are some very poor scheduling decisions but bonnaroo always has poor scheduling decisions, i've come to expect it. but i expect bonnaroo to do better with their top billings.
So yeah, it's the darker skinned Mike that was recommended. Problem is mobile google doesn't differentiate that much by the . or no period. I'll just know to see the dude around Mdou's set.

The closer we get to Roo the more I am feeling like having a big dumb emo sing along at the superjam... Will be a game time decision between that and Whyte Fang, but teenage me is winning the battle right now.

I think it depends a lot on what kind of "emo" they play. We'll definitely get the Dashboard Confessional hits, Andrew McMahon said he will be there so we'll hear a Something Corporate song or two... Maybe Chris will play some Further Seems Forever stuff but I doubt many in the crowd will know that. I can picture him singing "At Your Funeral" rather well, so I imagine that will be in there... the rest really depends on the guests I guess.

Sugar were going down Helena Misery business I write sins not tragedies Face down Ohio is for lovers Flavor of the week I miss you Ocean avenue Dear Maria
I'll bet anyone a beer that the Superjam has five or more of these ten songs

Not catching this one. I loved old DC hardcore, but to me emo sounds more wimpy side of Orange County skate punk mixed with some post punk. I remember my kids not liking it early in highschool either even though they jammed to some of the scene bands. Nobody was probably going to beat last years Superjam with Wong Notes, Vulfpeck. Fearless Flyers and all the musical special guests Cory brought for it. But this created another hole in my Saturday night. Hopefully the Ethel > Batiste > Brittany run will put some salve on the day. I’m sure I’ll enjoy them all, but it’s still midcard. Otherwise night is a giant hole for me. I heard Come a Little Closer last night in a bar (come on come on come on). And I was kind of glad to hear it although I didn’t plan on seeing Cage again. Outside chance I said fuck it and stayed around Centeroo part of the night, probably The Garden, ironically from Orange County, would be the biggest possible upside? I wouldn’t say I loved or even liked what I’ve heard or watched but some of the noise and experimental aspects in the live show might be worth seeing some of. Idk. More likely I’ll just blow out and come back after midnight since I’m sure I’ll hate the red hots setlist. I might have stuck around if I liked the EDM at The Other, but they didnt cater to me there either. Haha. Boned by Bonnaroo on a Saturday night. But hopefully those who dig what’s on the schedule enjoy it.

Crossing my fingers we get more "legit" emo ala SDRE/TGUK/STD/Mineral/etc but I know we won't and that's ok, I'll still have fun for a while.

Yeah I’m a sucker for some of that bad emo pop stuff from the early 2000s so I def would sing along to a couple songs. Totally would prefer a superjam like last years but we can only be so lucky lol. I’ve never seen Cage or Peppers so at least I’ve never seen them haha. Also Peppers makes me think of riding to elementary school with my mom cause they were always on the radio so it could be worse. Is Parcels too wimpy for you LN before PL? Saturday is Howard > Sean Paul > Kasablanca > Cage > Superjam > Peppers > Parcels > wait for PL and try not to fall asleep.

I’d swap I’m Not Okay for the MCR song but I’d be hype to sing at least of these songs you’ve listed

Is that American Hi-Fi’s Flavor of the Weak, or is it something else? I know even less emo than I know buttrock. But I do love that song.
Upcoming Shows: 11/8 - Goose @ The Andrew J. Brady Center 11/13 - Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros w/ The Wolfpack & The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra @ Cincinnati Music Hall 2/14 - Alan Walker @ The Fillmore Detroit 4/15 - Ben Folds w/ The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra @ Cincinnati Music Hall

I’m hopeful I’ll like Parcels live. Guess I’ll find out. I mentioned it earlier, but I saw Idles at Re:Set and didn’t much care for it until they went kind of hard the last 10-15 minutes. It was campy to me otherwise. If you like Cage even a little, you’ll enjoy the show. Matt always takes heat on Inforoo over being a Mick Jagger copycat. And he kind of is. But there are thousands of worse front persons to emulate. Don’t get pit though because he’ll fling his sweat all over the crowd. He is a hard worker, and their band is good. Money back guarantee someone will mention they forgot how many Cage songs they knew but forgot about or forgot it was them. Chili Peppers are what they are. I still listen to plenty of the old albums, but I’ve seen them too many times to know what they’re going to play isn’t what I want to hear by them. It was that way at Bonnaroo (and Hangout) as far back as 2012 when the best you were going to get was If You Have to Ask (personal favorite peppers tune) or BSSM. Flea rules. Chad is great. Anthony is an older singer but he’s okay. John maybe overrated by Inforoo but his work on Mothers Milk and BSSM is notable. You probably will enjoy it more than you realize. You’ll for sure get the majority of Under the Bridge, Give it Away, Suck My Kiss, Scar Tissue, Californication , By the Way and Dani California. So if you like some or most of that along with whatever even newer shit they play, you’ll have a good time. I just seen them too many times and they always left me hanging. That’s the one band that every time I saw them I left thinking something was missing.

when you post like this about roo I feel like you're the only person who really understands me
I’m likely not going see Melanie so it’s that and Diplo and PL. Diplo is annoying and cheesy, but he’s always got those random drops he’s been including 15 years. Thinking if I leave for the night and come back, I probably should eat some x.

On RHCP’s most recent setlist, i would be happy to hear 12 of the 19 songs they played. Sure, there’s the obligatory new songs and they could certainly do deeper cuts from Blood Sugar or earlier. But I still like them more than Foo Fighters and Pearl Jam (never that big a fan).
I doubt RHCP will be in my top 5 for the weekend, but I expect to have a good time.

What songs are you all most looking forward to hearing?
My personal ones, in no particular order:
Amsterdam-Gregory Alan Isakov Across That Fine Line-Nation of Language (if you've seen them before, you know they close with this and they kill it live) I Can See it In Your Face-Pretty Lights Run Away With Me-Carly Rae Raffarin-Dombrance (One of these days roo will book Todd Terje, and this song is the closest I'll get to hearing Oh Joy on the farm) Killing My Borrowed Time-Geese Pressure Cooker-Militarie Gun Oh Sheit It's X-Thundercat (he rarely plays it, but if he does I will take my top off) Elephant-Jason Isbell ("Strong men also cry"-The Big Lebowski) Femininomon-Chappell Roan
I’m likely not going see Melanie so it’s that and Diplo and PL. Diplo is annoying and cheesy, but he’s always got those random drops he’s been including 15 years. Thinking if I leave for the night and come back, I probably should eat some x.
I’ll def be at Diplo or I’d def fall asleep before 3:30 am, not really hype for it. Just hoping it’s a fun show I can bop to and stay awake.
