I'm a huge supporter of Jones as the GOAT and you always have to bet on someone who always gets it done, but if you set aside Stipe's age and ring rust (which I admit are HUGE things to set aside), it's actually not a great matchup for Jones.
Stipe definitely can put the lights out on anyone if he gets one good counter in, and he's always been an underrated wrestler. I strongly favor Jones but I absolutely see a path where it's later in the fight and Jones can't get a TD and loses an exchange on the feet.
Yeah that's basically the only way I could see it happening for Stipe as well... landing a big shot. Like you said tho, the age and time off are huge factors. Even when Stipe was in his prime and active, I'm still probably taking Jones. As is, it seems like a total mismatch.
I agree but really just because I default so strongly to "Jones always finds a way to win" and "Stipe is really old and probably slow".
But you could easily play devil's advocate when considering that Stipe has only really ever lost while in a fire fight from the feet and I don't see Jones engaging in that. It feels like Jones will just outwrestle him, and no one's really done that to Stipe yet. It feels like Stipe has no prayer but it really hinges on the assumption that a 37 year old Jones is outwrestling a 42 year old Stipe for 5 rounds. Which sounds right but I wouldn't bet a fortune on.

I will say with all the talk about Stipe's inactivity it's not like Jones has been very active himself. One fight in the last almost 5 years. So idk.
Other than wrestling which I do think Jones will rely on, I also think he'll have success out-pointing Stipe using his reach to win rounds. Not sure we see a finish.

That's where I'm at. I could see Jones outpointing him on reach but if you think of how that could play out that's a lot of time for Stipe to land something. And at a certain point you do have to consider if/when Jones has a lost on step on defense. I feel confident in a Jones win, but not at the odds given. If Stipe connects I think Jones is in big trouble.

Stipe obviously won't be favored by many people, but you hit the nail on the head. I love Stipe (local guy) but I doubt I'll be putting any money on this fight.
And let's be realistic, although neither one is exactly geriatric, Jones has been teasing retirement too. And a 37 year old who has fought for two minutes in the last 4+ years (his only heavyweight fight) doesn't exactly scream dominance either. No result to this fight will surprise me, because literally anything could happen. Can't wait though!

Yep. If it goes the distance, Jones has to be the very heavy favorite, but I'd guess a KO would probably mean Stipe winning.

Kinda rooting for Stipe because this fight is lame for Jones and also doesn't really do any thing for Jones legacy regardless of if he wins or loses.
It doesnt do anything to Stipes legacy if he loses. So the only potential historic impact that can be had is Stipe winning. That would make Stipe 2-1 against DC, 1-1 against Francis and 1-0 against Jones, and he hands Jones his only real loss. I think that slides Stipe up the goat list a smidge. Kinda cool.
Chandler and Olives is the fight of the night. Can not wait. No way it goes to the third, same as last time.
Finally interested in a Bo fight. First time against someone thats worthy of a ufc roster spot.
Watch out for the Fighting Nerds dude opening up the main card. Should be a showcase for him. All those guys have been killing it this year.
Yeah this seemed to all go mostly according to plan.
I get why Nickal wanted to try and stand but I think they were counting on some highlight reel KO and he's just not there yet. I still think he'd wrestle any of the other 185s to death.
Jones looked better than I thought. And it seems like he's now saying the quite part out loud where he's willing to fight Aspinall if they give him enough money. I actually think it's a reasonable threat - I think UFC needs that fight more than Jones does.

Lots of people in that arena that had a major problem with politics in sports for the last 8 years or so.
It is still the Jones v Pereira fight that I think is the real money maker, but it's only that if one of them clears out Aspinall, and I still think Pereira needs to deal with Ankalaev. I know I've talked about this a bunch, but you won't get the same hype if you short cut to that fight.
Was hoping to see Ruffio get the KO and up his hype more. He did have some sick shots like the no look left. Guy is trying to be the Steph curry of the ufc and I love it. Props to the other dude he's tough af. Huge dead weight in the middle of the card with Nikal and the girl fight. Prelims were awesome other than the womens fight and Jonathan Martinez. That guy could be my least favorite fighter in the UFC after that performance.
I think maybe they get more buys running Jones-Poatan I just think it doesn't accomplish anything long term because I feel pretty certain Jones just takes him down and hurts him very badly.
Promtion-wise Jones-Aspinall is the fight they need to run. At its core UFC is just pro wrestling, and you really need Jones to put someone over on his way out to help build the next star. Tom's really the only shot. And if he can't do it, you just tip your cap to Jones.

Yeah, it's a shame that the sport has like 95% of the fans being complete morons. When they showed Trump on tv, most of the people at the BWW I was watching at starting cheering like their team just won a championship. Just complete idiots. Saw this video today too that pretty much sums it up. www.cnn.com/2024/11/18/politics/video/ufc-trump-fans-digvid
I really hope Jones is just trying to build up the Aspinall fight even more with how much he's talking like he doesn't want it. The Pereira fight makes no sense right now. It's not like he's going to jump Aspinall for the HW title fight. And I doubt Jones will ever go back down to 205. Jones said he would give up the HW belt to fight Pereira over Tom, but even then if Pereira goes up to HW, how do you market that as a non-title fight? Just makes no sense. But if Jones beats Tom and Pereira beat Ankalaev, then sure, make it happen after that. Plus, we all know how that fight goes. Jones takes it to the ground as soon as possible and pretty much has his way with him. It won't be some barn-burner that casuals will be expecting. I just hope Dana can make the Aspinall fight happen. Jones mentioned wanting to be paid some crazy amount to take it, so idk what exactly that entails. The ufc has historically balked at those crazy dollar figure demands, like in the case with Ngannou.

I think Jones is being honest and legit doesnt want to fight Tom and does want to fight Pereira.
If I was his PR team, I would have had Jones explain it like this:
I’m retiring. I had nothing left to prove and I’m going to go out on top. The one scenario in which I would fight again is if Pereira were to beat Ankalaev and then Tom Aspinall. Because at that time, people would start saying he’s the greatest fighter of all time. So I would come back to personally squash that and make sure I stay as the unquestioned goat of the sport.
But the way hes delivered the message is like oh yeah im not thinking about retiring. I just want to keep winning against big names.

Such a bad look.
It really is a bad look. Hearing him at the press conference just made me cringe. Making comments like "I don't want to fight dangerous up and comers," and "he's (Aspinall) 6 years younger and 30 lbs heavier than me." I mean, you don't want to come off as ducking the guy but these excuses legitimately sound like he's not confident he could beat him, which is crazy for the supposed GOAT. Is there really no competitive bone left in him or what? But then he wants to fight "big" names like Pereira, who he knows damn well is an easier fight? Just retire already and if Pereira happens to beat both Ankalaev and Aspinall, come back I guess. Like I said tho, hopefully this is all just a way to get him more $ for taking the fight with Tom, idk
