It's been proven time and time again that the best way to negotiate with Dana is to threaten retirement or outright retire.
They made a lot of money on Jones for a lot of years. I would be shocked if he wouldn't fight Aspinall for the right price. But he'd need to get paid a lot.
just saw Jon Jones is retiring after 306. i diddnt get into UFC until he was gone but this is ridiculous to duck Aspinall like this. Since I have watched thats by far the biggest and most interesting fight the UFC could possibly have. absolute mega fight to either solidify the goat or pass the torch.
It's a total joke and serves to delegitimize the league / sport. The fact that Tom already had to defend his interim belt was crazy enough.

It's 99% on Dana. This is the output of how he's structured fight contracts and promotion. He's not going to strip Jones of the title because he needs to sell the Stipe fight. And Jones (rightfully) bitched about his contract for years when he was getting paid a fraction of what he was bringing in. Now that he has the leverage there's no one who's going to force him to fight.
It sucks for the fans and the sport but it's all on Dana.

There are 2 separate annoying things going on.
1. Jones should have been stripped or he should have voluntarily given the belt up the way Jahmal Hill did last year when he got injured. I'm not that passionate about this. It's kind of hard to know where to draw the line with an injury.
2. Jones should be fighting Aspinall, not Stipe.
Both Dana or Jones could individually solve either issue. The biggest problem I have is that Jones was allowed to handpick and unworthy opponent. The culture of calling specific opponents out has reached a boiling point of sorts. I typically don't have an issue with it unless it involves a title, but thinking about it now I should probably just be principled and say that it should never happen at any level. Sean O'Malley being able to fight Chito for his first defense was egregious, but even that is more sensible than Stipe getting this title shot. Jones shouldn't be allowed to dictate this, and that's on the person allowing it and the person actually doing it / calling for it.

I don't disagree with either of these but I lay the blame entirely on Dana. He could force Jones to fight Aspinall or relinquish the title and retire. And he's not doing it.
I don't love Jones the person but as an independent contractor he should be trying to do what's best for himself.
Hard to pick against Pereira with how he's looked recently but I think Roundtree is a live dog. He has legit standup & power. In a vacuum, Pereira is probably the safe pick. But considering odds, I have to throw a little on Roundtree. +550 for Roundtree via KO. I'll take those odds.
Really surprised Pena is an underdog. I see her grappling her way to a decision.
I think roundtree isnt all that good and is easily finished in the first. he has no business even getting this fight. I love me some Kayla, shell win by sub in the first. shes unmatched.
Roundtree definitely has a punchers chance but this just feels like a fight that's being made because they need a main event and this was the best use of Poatan that they could come up with.
Kinda feels like an old Saturday Night's Main Event where Hulk Hogan would fight against a b-level guy like Hercules or something.
Maybe the most impressive performance from Pereira other than maybe his first Izzy fight. Showed a good chin (Roundtree hit him with some good shots) and had nice cardio. Rountree got the first couple rounds but once it was clear he wasn't going to finish him, the fight was Pereira's. Assuming Ankalaev wins in a few weeks, Pereira needs to fight him next, no question.
Pena is lucky to get that decision. I had it 3-2 for her but it was close. Don't know what the hell she was thinking by staying standing and not taking the fight to the ground. Her 2 clear rounds were when she used her grappling to take Pennington down and control the fight there. And then she doesn't even try a takedown in rounds 4 & 5? Mind boggling. Harrison probably beats her ass.

completely agree. It was such a risky and stupid move by the ufc.
If Rountree would have won, you would have had champion that isnt even close to being a king of the division. Will feel like a fake champ and it tinges the aura of the belt in general.
Last nights fight was fucking awesome in a vacuum, but since Rountree didnt have to beat Jiri, Hill, and/or Anka, we dont truly know if Rountree is great or is it possible that Pereira is starting to fade a bit.
I also dont know if last night does a ton for Perieras legacy, especially when hes this old. Cant waste opportunities.
I’ll keep saying this, but he needs to fight Ankalaev then Aspinall then Jon Jones then Izzy. Winning those 4 and retiring at 40 makes him one of the most legendary athletes of all time. Why not chase that kind of greatness. Beating Jiri again and Rountree do add to his legacy, but they do kinda feel like random sidequests.
Like pretty much every MMA fan, I love Max but not sure I can see him beating Topuria this weekend. I just think Topuria is the real deal, and so well-rounded. He may be the star the UFC was hoping O’Malley would be because I don’t see him losing to anyone at 145 for a min. He’s good everywhere and I don’t think he’ll crumble under the pressure that Max brings. I think the bigger question is if he can finish Max, something that no one has done. I don’t he will, Max is so durable. I’ll take Topuria by decision.
I got Khamzat over Whittaker… assuming he doesn’t pull out between now and Sat lol. If he looks good against Whittaker, I wouldn’t be opposed to him jumping the line and fighting DDP next. We’ve already seen DDP-Strickland, and it wasn’t necessarily a barn burner. Give me a new matchup.
Ankalaev not only needs a win but an impressive one to cement his status as the next opponent for Pereira. I think he wins, but hopefully he gets a finish.
Throwing out a parlay with Topuria, Khamzat, Murphy, Ankalaev, and Neal. Let’s see how that pans out.
finally a worth while card. ill be tuning in for most of it for the first time in a while. Khamzat is my guy, first that made me want to tune in every fight since i started watching. I have no doubts he wins, a finish will prob help him jump the line. Ankalaev should be next no matter what if he wins, i hate how Dana has been trying to get more finishes as a way to reward fighters into fights they deserve regardless.

I have an annoying obligation during the day so im turning my phone off and watching at night with a buddy. Cant fucking wait,
The top 2 fights are seriously like 2 of the best 5-7 matchups of the year. So many questions to be answered for Ilia and Khamzat and I have no fucking idea what will happen.
Im starting to think Whittaker will win. I mean Khamzat had a full camp at 185 and it looked like Usman would have won a 5 rounder with him on 10 days notice. But it also still feels like Khamzat is unbeatable.
I think Ilia will win mostly because Max is looking drained to me in these interviews. I think Id take max easily if this was at 155 but I have a bad feeling just looking at him rn.
Rakic isnt a walk over for Ankalaev. That will be interesting.
Sucks that Gane and Volkov fell off this card. Would have been 4 amazing matchups. Not totally enthralled with Murphy / Ige. Excited to see Shara again.

Fair points on Khamzat and his cardio has always been the thing that seems like it could be his achilles heel. If/when he ever has to go 5 rounds, that may come into play. But this is another 3 rounder for him, so I don't think that will be much of an issue. Plus, even tho he's a natural 170er, Usman is one of the best to ever do it and I think he's a more difficult matchup than Whittaker. He has some of the best takedown defense and probably more power. I think Khamzat keeps the train rolling in this fight.
Idk man... Max has always seemed to look pretty drained for his weight cuts. I would take Topuria at any weight class tbh. He's just so good. I have a feeling that this may play out like the second Max-Porier fight, with Max just eating more powerful shots overall. But I also don't think it'll be as close as that fight. Might have some back and forth, but we'll see. Looking forward to it.

Ive got some exciting news for you - this is 5 rounds.
And sorry - theres no way Usman is better at 185 than the 3rd best 185er of all time. If Khamzat wins this, it will be his most impressive win yet. And im jot saying its unlikely. Im 50/50 which is why im so hyped.

Oh shit, didn't know it was a 5 rounder??! That's cool, and definitely puts a more interesting twist in that fight. Still taking Khamzat, but I can see a more realistic opportunity for Whittaker in 5 rounds.
Eh, agree to disagree I guess on the Usman/Whittaker thing. Don't get me wrong, Whittaker has always been solid, but Usman could be the best of all time at 170 and Whittaker used to be a welterweight, so it's not like he's huge for the 185 weight class. I just think Usman's takedown defense and overall skillset is a bigger challenge. We'll see how Whittaker does Sat, maybe I'll change my mind lol.

Sick card other than the Ankalaev fight. Also felt a little robbed by the quick Whittaker tap but khamzat is insane. He might run through ddp. Really hope we dont have to wait through strickland ddp first.

Couple thoughts on Ilia and Max.
I feel like people are downplaying the opening exchange. Max should be stripped of the BMF belt. Yes - it was intelligent to not go into the pocket with Topuria in the opening seconds. But oftentimes "badassery" is in fact associate with stupidity. It's intelligent to not engage specifically because he was scared to get knocked out like we all know he would have. It really does recontextualize his previous points to the ground. He was willing to do it at the end of a fight with JG after he had ben eye poked twice, had a broken to shit nose, and was battered to hell. But he wasn't willing to stand and swing with someone he knows is a better boxer while neither of them was compromised. It was an amazing ploy by Ilia, and Max doing a matador gesture after looked very weak imo.
All of that said, it's a sport. Max wants to be the real champion, so I get it. I'm only calling this out because of the bs WWE BMF belt. That belt should be removed. It has no meaning, and Ilia is clearly more of a badass than Max is after last night. It would be cringe as fuck to see Max promoted as the BMF champ following this. Like how could anyone take that seriously?
The commentators said something interesting about what Ilia did this year. It would be like if a LHW went in a knocked out Jon Jones and DC in the same year. Ilia does have a case for fighter of the year over Pereira since he beat 2 guys that people would consider top 10 or 15 of all time whereas nobody that Pereira beat would land in a top 75 of all time conversation I don't think.
Ilia has now stacked up 2 unreal resume defining wins. I'm really interested in seeing if he can build a goat case over the next few years. With that in mind, I can't say I'm excited about a Volk rematch. Volk of course deserves it. It just does next to nothing for Ilia. I think we all know Ilia will do the same thing to Volk again, and it won't really boost Ilia's status. So it feels like we are wasting 6 months of Ilia's prime when we're trying to really see what kind of career he can have. If anything, I'd like to see Diego and Volk fight each other with the winner facing Topuria. If volk won, at least we'd know he wasn't washed and it would make the fight a little more intriguing. And if Diego won, we'd know that he is a complete beast and that fight vs Topuria would have hype. Then I'd want to see Ilia fight the winner of Aljo / Mosvar... prove it against a grappler. Then the Topuria / Islam fight.

Pretty much agree on the BMF belt. Never liked it but was ok with it the first time with Masvidal-Diaz. It should go away tho, doesn't mean shit. I think Max now probably goes to 155 and defends it against someone there.
Not very excited for that Ilia-Volk rematch either. Think it ends similarly. I don't see anyone beating Topuria at 145 right now. Lopes may be the biggest challenge, idk. But I do think he needs a few more wins at 145 before thinking about moving up to challenge Islam. Got to clean out your division first.
Pls give up DDP-Khamzat before Strickland. I don't want to see that rematch and Khamzat is a far more intriguing fight.

Agree he shouldnt move up yet. Just because we believe he would beat Lopes doesnt mean he shouldnt have to. Ditto evolev or aljo. I do think a Diego v Ilia fight would be exciting at least because I think Diego would charge his ass and there’d be a first round finish one way or the other.

Anyone giving Stipe a shot this weekend? I'm not. Think Jones gets an easy W. More interested in what he does afterward. Is he really gonna retire? Continue to dodge Aspinall?
Oliveira-Chandler should be fun but pretty mid card overall. Need to see Nickal challenged with a top 10ish opponent.

I'm a huge supporter of Jones as the GOAT and you always have to bet on someone who always gets it done, but if you set aside Stipe's age and ring rust (which I admit are HUGE things to set aside), it's actually not a great matchup for Jones.
Stipe definitely can put the lights out on anyone if he gets one good counter in, and he's always been an underrated wrestler. I strongly favor Jones but I absolutely see a path where it's later in the fight and Jones can't get a TD and loses an exchange on the feet.

Yeah that's basically the only way I could see it happening for Stipe as well... landing a big shot. Like you said tho, the age and time off are huge factors. Even when Stipe was in his prime and active, I'm still probably taking Jones. As is, it seems like a total mismatch.
